Life

Once
Life was joy

A holy life was destiny's choice for me
Family and village rejoiced in my calling

Then
I grew older

Purity and power were mine to hold
But turned envious eyes my way

She
Spoke of love

Kind words twisted into a curse
I recognized but scorned its power

Gods
Love the foolish

He was human, though half-demon
Just as I was human, though god-touched

He
Understood the pain

That these differences made
And naively we dared to tempt fate

Evil
Destroyed us easily

In blood our story ended; a lesson they say
In fire I ended the pain, or so I thought

But...
Then...
She...
Fell...

Gods
Can be cruel

I saw her -my- face only after his
He lived and he cared for her and he lived

Betrayal
Sang bitter chords

Justice was denied me, death denied as well
Yet a life among the living wasn't allowed

Hell
Had followed me

So I decided to play hell's game
One a walking corpse is perfectly suited for

Dangerous
Flirtations I made

Devious in death as I couldn't be in life
I played the games I once watched others play

Forging
Chains of pain

I strengthened the girl, tormented my false love
Tempted and confused my murderer and enemy

And
Paid the price

My final act ensures he loses even as he wins
Salvation unneeded; the trap is set with my death and

Sweet...
Is...
The...
Release...

Now
I stand here

On the border of the afterlife
I pause amongst the irises and look over the lilies

I
Just now realized

This time there is no dishonor, no hatred
The fetid heap of the damned has no claim on me

There
Is only peace

I wonder how this story ends, or if it ever will
Perhaps it's only a circle turning without end

A
Voice is calling

Past the bridge, where all is concealed
It bids me to finish the journey

Breathing
My last breath

I press my bare foot to the wooden bridge
Taking the last step into the forgetfulness of death

But
Before memory leaves

A warm kiss is suddenly pressed to my lips
And, smiling, I

Walk...
Into...
The...
Mist...
