Title: A Rose By Any Other Name
Summary: Set during The Shakespeare Code, but no real spoilers. William and the Doctor have a talk.
Disclaimer: Doctor Who belongs to the BBC.
Author's Note: I really enjoyed The Shakespeare Code, but felt this scene should have existed in some way. So, here it is!
A Rose By Any Other Name
William approached the Doctor.
"That Martha girl sure is a great catch," he said. The Doctor looked at him.
"She's alright I suppose," he said. "Asks too many questions though. She's too obsessed with finding out why things are, and not just accepting them." William gave a small laugh.
"Accepting them," he said. "That's rich coming from you. I can tell that something's troubling you. Something that happened fairly recently." The Doctor tried to avert William's eyes, but failed. William raised a finger.
"Only one thing can cause men the pain you feel," he said. "A woman. A woman who you loved, but can never see again." The Doctor sighed and ran his hand through his hair.
"You'd make a lot of money as a fortune teller, you know," he said.
"Don't be ridiculous, I can't tell the future," said William. "I only take what is given to me, analyse it, and use the information to create a picture of the person I see before me. And it's true, some signs may tell of things happened past. But nothing … nothing can decide the future." The Doctor nodded.
"What was her name?" William asked.
"Rose," replied the Doctor. "She was the most extraordinary person I've ever met. She just had this aura, this energy. Her smile lit up the room. When she looked at me, I felt like she could see into my soul. She was, is, one in a million."
"And what about Martha?" asked William.
"I barely know the girl, I just took her for a trip coz she saved my life," said the Doctor. William put a hand on the Doctor's shoulder.
"You've truly experienced love's labours lost," he said. "But that doesn't mean you can't move forward. I'm sure Rose would want you to be happy. She'd want you to find someone."
Is this guy related to Donna? wondered the Doctor.
"Well, if you'll excuse me, I have things to do," said William. He turned and headed towards the door. Just before exiting, he turned his head towards the Doctor.
"Remember Doctor, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," he said. He then left. The Doctor looked into the distance.
"No," he said to himself. "No one will smell as sweet as her." Just then, Martha entered the room.
"Everything alright Doctor?" she asked.
"Yeah," said the Doctor, smiling. But Martha's not half bad.
