The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore

Prologue

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was the greatest wizard in the world. At least, the greatest wizard in his backyard. Which wasn't saying much, due to the fact that the only other people in the backyard were his younger brother and sister, Aberforth and Ariana. But someday, someday he would be the greatest wizard in the world. He was determined. Even at the tender age of seven-and-three-quarters, he had decided that he would be the most amazing wizard in the entire universe. But now, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore had to eat his macaroni.

"Al! Al! Lookit what I found!" Two-year-old Ariana ran to her brother, stumbling over various tree roots in the process.

"Isn't it pretty?" She asked, face shining gleefully. Albus looked into his sister's face.

"It's a beetle, Ari," he said slowly.

"Yeah, but it's a nice beetle," Ariana explained, looking unnaturally solemn. "And it misses it's mummy and daddy. It can't find it's mummy and daddy, and it's lonely. It's name is Beetle."

Albus stared at his sister for a moment.

"That's dumb," he said finally, "Beetles don't have families."

"Do too!" Ariana shouted at her brother. "Everything gots to have a family, or else who would take care of it?"

Albus was getting frustrated now. He grabbed his sister's thin, tiny hands and took the beetle away.

"No, it doesn't, Ari! Beetles don't have families!" Albus dropped the beetle on the ground and squashed it with his shoe.

"NO!" Ariana screamed, "You killed him! You killed poor Beetle! Murderer!"

A woman immediately appeared at the back door.

"What's going on, Ari?" She asked.

"Al killed Beetle! He smushed him!" She shrieked, tears running down her face.

"It's okay...the beetle will be fine," the woman said absentmindedly, returning to the house.

Ariana continued to cry. She picked up the flattened beetle and rocked it against her chest.

"I'm sorry, Beetle, I didn't want you to die."

Albus ignored his sisters' tears and went inside to finish his macaroni. When he glanced out the window again, his brother and sister were standing solemnly around the dead beetle, holding hands and praying over Beetle's body.
