When the fires died down and the last of the demons had fallen into the Earth, Gwen was one of the first to go through the rubble. Clumps of wire shot up from the bumpy ground like ferns. Stray sparks lit with a pop above the wreckage. Jagged edges of concrete and steel bit into her palms as she climbed; the stench of violence was in her nostrils. She knew that she was close to finding him.
It took five minutes to coax him towards her, thirty minutes to help him to her car, and three hours on I-5 south to get Gunn to a hospital. He had been gray around the edges when Gwen finally got him to a doctor. The hospital was far enough away from Angel's Last Stand that it wasn't filled with the victims of the 'gas line explosion.' She was certain, as she watched him disappear to the operating room, that he was going to die on her again.
He was heavy and awkward against her when she helped him to the car after he was let out of the hospital. Sorrow replaced his usual animation. Gwen told herself that it was just the pain killers and breathed a little easier when he fell asleep on the airplane. Gunn had never left Los Angeles country, but she hoped that Japan would suit him.
Demons hunted under the bright lights of Tokyo; Gunn fought them with a group of teens from Korea town. It had started out gradually, but within six months, she was fighting the good fight with him. Some nights he didn't speak, but when he smiled he made up for it. He looked content after a night of patrol, even if they only saved a drunk salaryman, and it was worth missing out on a few jobs to see him look alive again.
