Author's Notes: I wanted to write something that would somehow explore Sam's life, and his perception of the universe, before and after the events that had transpired in the movie. I know it's short, but I hope you'll enjoy reading it. Italics means character thoughts. Many thanks to all who'll read, and read and review.

The Vastness of Space
Sam Witwicky liked to climb their roof at night, and just look at the stars.
And sometimes, lying there on the quiet rooftop, staring into space, he found himself asking questions he normally wouldn't.
What's out there?, he wondered.
For a while, he only gazed at the vast night sky, as if imploring the heavens for an answer. Are there more Earths out there, planets teeming with life? Or are we the only ones? Are we alone in the universe?
If it was true, if the universe, in its infinity, was devoid of life except for Earth...
It would be an awful waste of space.
Sam didn't know why, but at that moment, he couldn't help but feel so...isolated. So empty.
Still, he remained there, watching the sky.
Sam Witwicky liked to climb the tree at the lookout at night, and just look at the stars.
And sitting there, in one of the sturdy branches, staring into space, he found comfort and peace of mind.
Are there any more out there?, he wondered.
For a time, he gazed at the immense night sky, keeping watch for a sign. And then there it was - a shooting star, briefly passing through the heavens, like a trail of firefly light.
And he knew then that the universe, in its infinity, wasn't at all empty. There are others out there, maybe not like us in form or shape, but like us in the simple fact that they are alive.
He glanced at his companion - a mechanical sentient being, sitting at the foot of the tree, watching the night sky with him.
No, we are not alone.
He is not alone.
Sam smiled, and continued watching the stars.
