"Did you love her?"
"Ana Lucia. Did you love her?"
"Freckles, what the hell are you talking about?"
"Jack told me you slept with her."
"Well, guess we shouldn't let the doctor in on the location of the secret treasure. He'll just spill the beans."
"Don't." Her voice was strong, brimming with anger.
She glared at him. He could see this was no time for his usual joking banter.
"No, I didn't love her," he suddenly snapped. "What the hell, Freckles? We fucked, since when does that mean anything to me?"
"I don't know. You certainly seem to be changing. Since when do you tell Jack things? Since when do you tell him he's the closest thing you have to a friend on the Island?"
"Oh for Chrissake—is that was this is about? You're jealous I told him he was my friend?"
"I am not jealous because you—I'm not jealous about anything."
"Then why are you so upset girl?"
"I'm not upset. I was just asking if you loved her."
"Freckles, you jumped down my throat. Don't go pretendin' you ain't upset."
She sighed. She knew it was obvious that she was upset and probably obviously that she was jealous of more than just Jack, but she hated that Sawyer could see that so easily.
"I just don't understand why you started telling Jack things. You hate Jack."
"Well I wasn't about to tell you I banged the Latina, now was I?"
"Why not?" she asked indignantly. She knew she sounded like a petulant child.
He looked at her over his glasses. Finally he took them off and set them and the book he was reading next to him.
"What?" She was pushing it. She knew she was, but she wasn't about to back down now. Finally he sighed and spoke.
"The only reason I slept with Rambina in the first place was because you and Doctor Giggles got 'caught in a net'."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
He stared at her in disbelief. "So you and the Good Doctor doin' it doesn't matter but with me and Lucy it does?"
She laughed. She laughed at him and he suddenly wanted to throw up. How in God's name could she laugh at him at that moment?
"Jack and I got caught in what of Rousseau's nets."
"The traps she set up. Like the one that caught Henry. I picked up a doll and we both got caught in the net."
He looked at her for a minute before suddenly turning to the ocean. "Oh."
She laughed again but it was quieter this time, gentler. This time it didn't pierce his heart as much.
"You slept with Ana Lucia because you thought I slept with Jack, and then you called me jealous?"
"You were!" he snapped defensively.
This time he laughed too.
"God, what are we doing Sawyer?"
"Freckles, I got no clue."
They sat in silence for a while, looking out at the rolling blue and occasionally stealing glances at each other.
"Normally I'm good with this stuff Freckles," Sawyer finally broke the silence. "Normally I can charm the women into bed and get whatever I want from them. But you're different. You've always been different. I never wanted that from you. You're different and you're wild and I don't quite know how to handle you."
"I lived on the run," Kate said quietly. "I killed one man I loved and had to knock out and run away from the other. I'm not exactly the expert on this either."
She had said "love", right?
They were silent again.
"So what do we do?" Kate asked.
"I don't know, that's when the movie ended."
She laughed. Of course he would have a pop culture reference. "What?"
"Garden State? The gangly white guys asks Natalie Portman what they're supposed to do three times or so, then they make out, then the movie ends."
"So you're saying we should make out?"
He looked at her sideways and grinned.
"Well yeah, but I don't know what we do after that. Like I said, the movie ends there."
She giggled. "I've got some idea what we do after that."
