A Simple Smile
Disclaimer: I do not own FMA!
"I have witnessed the softening of the hardest of hearts by a simple smile."
Colonel Roy Mustang wasn't the type to smile. He did every once and awhile, but today was not one of those days. Today was Brigadier General Maes Hughes' funeral and it was Roy's fault.
At least, that was what he told himself.
He didn't really listen when the priest said his prayer or when Elysia called for her father in sobs. He didn't hear the cars drive away when everyone left. All he heard was his heartbreaking, piece-by-piece.
He kept quietly listening until someone spoke.
"Are you alright sir?"
He breathed in her scent as she stepped forward and stood beside him, like she always did.
"I… don't know…" His voice cracked with each word.
His heart was hardened and most likely, never to be fixed. He was a murdering, selfish soldier, and someone who couldn't even save his own best friend.
Suddenly, he felt a warm hand grab hold of his cold, gloved one. He looked over and saw her smiling. Smiling with tears cascading down her cheeks. Tears began to fall from his own eyes when he smiled back.
As they stood there, softly smiling at each other, their open wounds and scars finally began to heal.
