Vacation on Ember Island had been fun, but was rapidly coming to a close. The four teenagers were set to return to the Fire Nation the next day. Azula had just finished packing her belongings away and was about to get into bed when she heard a knock at the door. She started to respond, but before she could formulate the words, the door burst open and Ty Lee tumbled in.
"Azula, can I stay in here tonight? The door to my room is locked, and I know Mai and Zuko are up to something in there." she asked, her mouth in a shy grin. Azula had been looking forward to getting some rest, and knew from past sleepovers that the acrobat would keep her up half the night with excited chatter. She hesitated for a moment while Ty Lee kept talking.
"I mean, it is sort of your fault that they're in there. If you hadn't gotten the idea to set them up…" Ty Lee continued. Azula knew she couldn't leave her friend to sleep outside with the crab-gulls, but she couldn't let go of what had happened that night; the way Ty Lee smiled at the boys unpacking her suitcase, the way she smiled at the boys surrounding her in the main party room, the way she smiled… Azula shook her head.
"Don't you have a boyfriend who could share his room?" Azula said, with scorn in her voice. "I'm sure there are plenty who would make the offer." She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked up at her friend.
"I'm not like that! Are you still jealous of me? You even kissed someone tonight- you went further than I did." She pointed out, her usually joyful face in a pout.
"I'm not jealous of you. I never said I was jealous of you!" Azula shouted, slamming her hands onto the bed.
"Yes, you did! You told me right before you went off with that Chan guy." The flickering light from the lamp by the bed made her eyes look furious and sad at the same time.
" I just said that I was jealous," whispered Azula. Ty Lee sat down next to her on the bed. The two looked at each other in silence for a moment before Ty Lee spoke again.
"If you weren't jealous of me, than who were you jealous of?" she said, and then paused, her eyes widening with realization. "I didn't like them. You saw, I fought them off and came right back to you. It was you who was off kissing…"
"Kissing Chan was… a mistake. It was power, to see if I could, and I did. But it wasn't anything like…" started Azula, but could not finish her sentence because her lips suddenly became otherwise occupied. Ty Lee's soft lips caressing her own felt right, perfect, like nothing she had ever experienced before. Azula took the acrobat into a soft embrace as Ty Lee lowered her head to kiss Azula's collarbone. Azula brushed her forehead gently with her lips, noting how smooth her skin was. She began to untangle the girl's braid while drawing in the scent of her hair. It was hard to believe that she was this close to the girl she had known and cared for since youth. Ty Lee raised her head so the two were equal; Azula could feel her pulse quicken as they gazed into each other's eyes. She could hear Ty Lee's breath quicken as she placed a hand behind her neck and pulled her into another kiss. Azula felt nothing but pure bliss as the two lay down beside each other on the bed, Ty Lee's petite hand resting on the small of Azula's back, their lips so close that they could feel the heat between them.
"So, does this mean I can stay?" teased Ty Lee, tenderly snuggling closer.
Azula gazed at that enticing smile that was now just for her, and then reached behind her and turned off the lamp, silently answering Ty Lee's quip. She knew that this was a night she would never forget.
