One Beat

They were curled up on the couch together. Watanuki had fallen asleep and Doumeki didn't have the heart to wake him. He should, in all honesty. They were supposed to be studying for the biology exam tomorrow. Still, Watanuki looked so cute asleep and Doumeki had to admit it felt good, to hold him in his arms. It felt good to know that his friend, his love, was safe.

Their studying hadn't been too productive anyway. Given that Doumeki was unable to resist teasing Watanuki and that Watanuki was incapable of ignoring Doumeki, biology had taken a very mediocre second place. These evenings were fun though, and in Doumeki's opinion fun was more important for Watanuki then school. Watanuki seemed to run on a continual fun deficiency.

Doumeki sighed and closed his eyes, pulling Watanuki closer. Biology was a lost cause anyway. Resting his face in Watanuki's neck he inhaled… and felt it; a pulse: the very beat of Watanuki's life.

And with that Doumeki could see it: blood rushing from the vena cava to the right atrium, being pulled from the right atrium into the right ventricle by the tricuspid valve. From there it would be sucked through the pulmonary semilunar valve and transported by pulmonary trunk and arteries to the lungs. Oxygenated once more it would go through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium. Then again valves would do their work. This time it would be the bicuspid valve, taking the blood to the all important left ventricle and from there the aortic semilunar valve would bring it to the aorta then, then, to the rest of the body.

Doumeki would have laughed if it had been in his character to do so, instead he leaned down to kiss his lover's pulse point. It looked like he had learned some biology this evening after all…
