The Greatest Gift

Daniel was innocently walking down the hallways of the SGC on Christmas eve. He really didn't have anywhere else to be so he figured he would use the quiet time on the Base to get some work done. Before he could reach the safety of his office Jack's voice rang out.

"Daniel! Daniel, wait up!"

Stopping Daniel slowly turned around and found Jack bounding towards him. It made Daniel nervous to see the man in such a good mood, particularly near Christmas, Jack was never one to enjoy the family holiday. Skidding to a halt Jack presented Daniel with a thin box wrapped in brightly coloured paper.

"Merry Christmas, Daniel." Jack beamed.

"What is this?"

"It's a gift, very prevalent this time of year in Western culture."

Daniel rolled his eyes.

"Well, are you going to open it or what?"

Daniel sighed heavily and began to open the thin box. Inside was a manila folder. Looking up at Jack suspiciously Daniel took the folder out and opened it. He read the official paper inside several times, but he still didn't believe it. He furrowed his brow, hoping that this was just some sick joke.

"Jack...what is this?"

"And all this time you've been telling us you're good at reading." Jack shook his head sadly.

"Jack, really, what is this?"

"What else? They're adoption papers."

"A...adoption papers?"

"Yup."

"You...you...you adopted me?" Daniel stuttered. "I...you...what the fu...are you insane?"

"Carter told me that you were never adopted."

"Jack...I'm thirty-seven."

"Never too late to become part of the family." Jack chuckled. "Now, you don't have to take my last name, but it would be nice. Besides 'Dr. O'Neill' has such a nice ring to it."

"I hate you."

"See, we're talking like father and son already."

"How did you even pull this off. I mean, those records were closed the day I turned eighteen."

"I will admit, it wasn't easy. But you're worth it. Actually the look on your face was worth it."

Daniel's eyes narrowed into icy slits. Jack continued to smile brightly. After a moment a Cheshire grin slipped across Daniel's face as well, which made Jack suddenly nervous. Daniel slung his arm over Jack's shoulders and smiled mischievously.

"Okay, now that we're officially 'family'," Daniel purred "perhaps we can talk about my student loans."

"Your...loans. You haven't paid those off yet?"

"No, not by a long shot...Dad."
