Summary: Ficlet. Zuko was terribly easy to hate.
Notes: I dunno, I don't think it's that good really. I just wanted to write something Avatar because that multi-chapter one just isn't coming.
You know what I just thought though – Zuko's mum is dead, isn't she? Jesus, I need to get the DVDs.
Zuko was so easy to hate. He made it so easy to forget he was human. It was so easy to look at that scar on his eye and think, You deserved it.
He was a firebender, the Fire Nation's prince. He was bent on bringing Aang to his knees before his father. Sokka didn't need to pretend he'd never considered why Zuko was trying so hard, chasing so far, clinging to this singular duty as if it was all he had left.
Because Sokka didn't care. He had all his reasons right there. Zuko would be the next Fire Lord and he'd be as brutal as Ozai.
But then Iroh told them the truth.
Banished, burned, broken. A more powerful younger sister. A dead mother. A father who never really believed in him. Stubbornness, pride, fury, skill, belief, delusion, determination.
Suddenly Sokka started to see parallels. A list of tiny connections and similarities. Suddenly Zuko was human.
And it wasn't so easy anymore.
