For The Caged One

Why do you cower?

What has happened to you?

What has been done

To make you fear

My dear?

Is it war that has you torn,

Or death –

Of a friend? Of a loved one?

Do you still feel undefended?

Are your old wounds still untended?

In your eyes, those icy eyes,

I see madness, anguish,

Hatred burning like embers…

There's something wild –

But also a child

With innocence shattered.

He looks to me now.

His sad eyes plead to mine:

"Please rescue me

I must be free…"

But how, my caged bird,

Can I ever save you

From yourself?
