Summary: Some heart-warming angst for the soul. Happy New Year! Slightly a/u now. I may have posted this here before, but I don't think so.

Albus Dumbledore lay in his comfortable bed in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies. He couldn't see and he couldn't move but he knew that was where he was because he heard the nurses moving around. And, of course, he also heard Minerva.

She had come every day since that night Severus had tried to kill him. He had failed because he loved the old man, and some part of him refused to extinguish a light that burned so much brighter than his own. Instead Severus' curse had knocked him off his feet, knocked him off the edge of the tower, and it had been the fall that had broken him.

He didn't know how much time had passed, when you lived in your own dark world one day blended quite easily into the next, and it was only Minerva's visits that marked the passage of time. He knew that without her visits he would have gone insane, but he wished she would not come, wished she would not torment herself.

He felt her presence near his bed and tried, as he had for the past several visits, to open his eyes. He knew that everyday he lay in this bed he grew weaker, and he wanted to see her beautiful face one last time before he passed away.

"Albus?" Minerva asked, and he wondered what was happening.

"Albus I saw your eyes move, Albus please try," se was pleading for something he could not give and it broke his heart.

"Albus!" She pleaded one last time, her voice desperate.

She was silent for a very long time after that and Albus began to think she had gone away, before she asked, "Do you have any idea how much I love you, old man?" The tears were evident in her voice.

He fought then, harder than he had ever had, for just one moment of control when he could say goodbye to his oldest and dearest friend, and tell her that he felt the same.

But the harder he thought the further away Minerva seemed, and the darker his world seemed to become.

"Albus!" Minerva's anguished cry, the last sound he heard before he embarked on his next big adventure.
