What hurts the most

It was late one night when he had called her.

She hadn't heard from him for months.

Since his escape a few months ago, she had thought that she would never again hear his voice.

But now he had called.

"Nice to hear you haven't changed since our last encounter."

"But I guess you've changed. The last time I saw you, you were in your room and now you aren't."

She sounded like a cold-hearted bitch.

"I thought you would be happy for me to be free."

Then he hung up.

He hadn't called since Carthis.

She had thought she had lost him forever after she'd abandoned him when he had begged her for help.

But then he had called.

"Why didn't you help me?"

"I was hurt …"

"Why should you be hurt? I'm the abandoned one."

"Well, maybe you know now how I felt five years ago, Jarod."

"What are you talking about, Miss Parker?"

"Do you know what hurts the most, Jarod? That all these people you've helped over the years seem to be of more importance to you than an old friend like me."

Then she hung up.
