DROPS OF BLOOD II
by Leni

1. Scythe

Saetan has always been amused by the landen description of Death - scythes and black hoods are better left to his Executioner.

.

2. Rumpus

The upstairs rooms was never meant for the use of ten gifted witches; but even though Saetan can hear the rumpus from the other side of the Hall, he wouldn't dare interrupt their fun.

.

3. Stifle

At the sight of Chaosti and Aaron's grumpy expressions as they carry unsweetened moontime brews back into the kitchen, the older men have to stifle a chuckle.

.

4. Sameness

Jaenelle sometimes glances at him just so, sapphire eyes narrowing in a non-memory, and Saetan wonders if she's seeing the missing son in the father's features.

.

5. Loquacious

The coven's temper sharpens as their new dance instructor chatters nonsensically, until Saetan finally plucks the fool away from the ice-cold room.

.

6. Taboo

His conversations with Jaenelle touch every subject, every question, every person involved in their lives - except one.

.

7. Misogyny

When the number of Terreille immigrants increases, Saetan gives the first stern order to the coven: they are not to wander alone when outside the Hall.

.

8. Elderly

"Oh, Papa," Jaenelle laughs as Karla and Kalush jump over the rushing river again, "Maybe you're too old to understand our games."

.

9. Hold

The boyos barely hold a frustrated scream when they catch Morghan trying to slip into the gardens on her second moonday - instead Khardeen nods at Morton and Chaosti to carry her back to her bedroom while he goes to brew a fresh potion.

.

10. Backwards

"No, no, no, you've got it backwards!" Karla tells the confused driver as he keeps trying to veer Sundance's steps to the right, "Why are males so stubborn - oh, just let me do it!"

.

11. Hell

Andulvar looks at the youngsters playing cradle ("What?" Mephis snaps out of his usual gentle behavior when Karla blows him a kiss, "Who's ever heard of such a variation!") and smiles; under this roof must gather the only Blood who aren't afraid of Hell's inhabitants.

.

12. Suspicious

"Papa. Why didn't you have more kids?" Saetan thanks the Darkness it's his adopted daughter and not Witch who asks the question - his daughter, he can still protect with a lie.

.

13. Pleasure

Jaenelle arches an eyebrow at the book Silvia slipped her last week; if the author starts another sentence with 'The irresistible pleasure' she'll be tempted to throw it into the fireplace.

.

14. Scar

"Jaenelle' s soul scars are healing," Andulvar comments as he heats a glass of yarbarah and offers it to his best friend, then sighs at Saetan's expression and corrects his statement, "The scars she's aware of, at least."

.

15. Indite

Saetan laughs at Geoffrey's suggestion to put these months with Jaenelle's friends on paper, "And scare future generations?"

.

16. Squib

The young witches looked at the charred walls with distress, then Jaenelle consulted her notebook, "But they were only supposed to make noise!"

.

17. Organdy

Prothvar doesn't care that the organdy meant for the Ladies' dresses went up in flames, so his anger doesn't blind him to the fact that while it's two young Warlord Princes who face Saetan's wrath, it's the witches hiding behind the door who look truly guilty - he won't give them up, though; it's a man's right to protect a Queen, even from their honorary uncle.

.

18. Ride

Fifty millennia walking the Realms, and it's the first time they see Dea al Mon children sat astride an unicorn's back.

.

19. Cup

Even as she smiles at her father as they share the bloodwine cup during Winsol, Jaenelle is sure that she's missing something.

.

20. Mission

"After this time, I hope your mission has become clear," Saetan says as he looks proudly over the young men ("Serve the Ladies?" "Even when they say otherwise…." "Dodge a witch's temper while we're at it." "And their shoes!") and nodding at their answers, "All that and more, boys. All that and more."

.

21. Tears

Jaenelle traces a small silver bracelet and sighs to herself, "I don't even know why I'm crying."

.

22. Fan

For the first time in memory, sweet-tempered Kalush bares her teeth at Aaron - "If you insist on fanning me against the so-called heat, Prince, I'll put that fan where even Jaenelle will have trouble finding it."

.

23. Hard

"How hard can it be?" Karla pondered as she and Jaenelle slipped into the kitchen while Mrs. Beale was at the market.

.

24. Frivolous

Sylvia smiled at the teenage witches around her, "There, there, girls. Learning some beauty spells won't make you into a frivolous little bitch."

.

25. Dolphin

Saetan has always wondered if there are kindred among the dolphins; Jaenelle's small smile is answer enough.

.

26. Concede

The first thing an adolescent witch learns at the Hall is when to concede graciously to the males around her - and when to thump their arms (or snouts) and demand to be lowered back onto her feet.

.

27. Devour

Morghan and Karla stepped in front of Gabrielle, standing up to the keen-eyed Warlord Prince striding their way - "Chaosti, really, aim that devouring glance somewhere else," Karla said when the young man made to force himself between them, "It's only one more week until our Sister's Virgin Night - or should we tell Uncle Saetan that Gabrielle must postpone the date until her partner feels more settled?"

.

28. Ordinary

They aren't an ordinary court - in fact, they are not a court; but they dare anyone in the Realm to deny them the privilege to serve Jaenelle.

.

29. Adroit

As the Arcerian kitten grows into an adult, residents and visitors at SaDiablo Hall become adroit at shielding and jumping back when a curtain so much as flutters in a closed room; Kaelas' version of tag-and-pounce has already left a few bruises on the unsuspecting.

.

30. Babble

"You were trying to sniff her neck, puppy," Saetan tells the flustered teenager, and then smiles as Aaron babbles his way through an explanation while Kalush blushes up to her hairline.

.

31. Orange

Dujae studies the swirl of oranges, yellows and reds that take a whole wall of the room, scratching his chin with a contemplative expression while the coven looks on expectantly. "If that's your version of a fruit bowl, I can't wait to see what you'll do with a landscape."

.

32. Card

Lord Magstrom laid his card on the butler's tray and settled to wait for the High Lord; five minutes later, when Beale came back to announce he was welcome to the study, Magstrom wondered with no little amusement when the sight of four wolf pups dancing around the Dharo Queen had stopped surprising him.

.

33. Picket

When Lucivar saw his father, older brother and Andulvar standing before the door to Jaenelle's chambers, he growled out his frustration, "If she ever teaches Marian another lesson on how to 'properly' handle Warlord Princes in Kaeleer," - the males couldn't hide a sympathetic flinch - "tell Cat she won't be able to hide behind you."

.

34. Attention

"But it's just a stubbed toe," Jaenelle wailed when yet another blanket was tucked around her.

.

35. Always

In the coldest winter nights, Ladvarian always huddled into a snug spot between the Arcerian Warlord Prince and their chosen Lady.

.

36. Week

Jaenelle smiled gently at the confused expression on the older witch's face and took her hands as she directed them to the kitchen table, "I think I can help you, Tersa. Have you noticed that your companion always pens a letter to the Hourglass on the first day of the week?"

.

37. Mind

Landen children were hurried into their homes as soon as the Blood entered their village; but for some reason their parents didn't mind so much when it was that Lady and her friends who visited.

.

38. Milk

Mikal stared after the Black Widow after she'd handed him a full glass of milk - "Don't try to vanish it this time, Daemon." - and reminded himself to tell his mother about it this time.

.

39. Foe

An angry Eyrien was waiting for Lord Friall at the Hall's doorstep, "You can upset the Lady by requesting another audience on the Council's behalf, or you can still have your tongue when you get home. Your choice."

.

40. Pear

Morton placed a small bowl of sliced pears in front of Karla, and when she made a face, he slanted a glance at the platter of steaks in the breakfast serving, "Your choice," he added, and then hid a smile when Lucivar's name was cursed viciously between bites.

.

41. Pencil

Jaenelle worried the tip of her pencil between her teeth, wondering why the sketch of her adopted father kept showing her a much younger version.

.

42. Call

*Papa High Lord. Papa High Lord!* the puppy called on a spear thread, anxiety and frustration flavoring the words as it would any other male beleaguered by a witch's stubbornness, *Jaenelle won't stop reading so she can rest!*

.

43. Passable

"Your brother did make a passable show of concern during my past two moontimes," Marian sighed, serving Jaenelle more tea, and stopped when blue eyes snapped up at her in complete bafflement.

.

44. See

Khardeen stroked Sundancer's mane as their gallop slowed to a slow gait, and gave a chuckle, "I can see, Brother, that I wasn't the only one ready to flee from Morghan's temper."

.

45. Glare

Saetan entered Jaenelle's room to find his daughter half out of the bed and his Eyrien son, wings stretched and quivering, locked in a glaring contest while a cup of steaming brew hovered between them… "Good night, witch-child," the High Lord said and, before either youngster could think to reel him into their bickering, left the room and started searching for Andulvar - they could use the laugh.

.

46. Cooking

Prince Smoke was the one to bring the distressing news to the pack; five minutes later they'd found the perfect spot to bury the Lady's version of stew.

.

47. Tower

Unlike the Terreillian Queens, the coven didn't care that he towered over them or that his Jewel rank was so much higher than theirs; Lucivar couldn't remember being happier.

.

48. Peppered

It took Ladvarian a long time to understand that a thorough licking of a witch's face didn't equal being peppered in kisses by her mate.

.

49. Amethyst

Khardeen showed the contents of the small box to his best friends, nervous despite himself; Chaosti nodded his approval while Aaron grinned at the ring, "Amethysts do go great with red hair."

.

50. Wrist

All of Kaeleer knew it only took a flick of Jaenelle's wrist to bring the strongest Warlord Princes and Queens under her command; but only Little Terreille refused to acknowledge that such power didn't mean any harm.
