Fatherless-son,
Puppy-innocent
Eluding mama
Scampers out of
Mama's garden,
A Temari ball
Flashes bright in
Late Autumn sun-
"Can I play too???"

They freeze-
Disgust and fear
Undisguised-
The bright ball
From small,
Clawed hands
Snatched-
Adult faces
Stare forbiddingly.

The leader,
Sneers-
The ball is
Hurled over
Mama's fence,
"Hafu, half-breed!"
Leaving behind a
White-maned
Amber-eyed child,

Fatherless-son
Runs barefoot,
Clawed toes
Against
Cold stone
Into mama's garden
Eyes stinging-
"Okasan, Mama,
What is half-breed?"

And for an
Answer
Is folded
Weeping
Into an
Autumn kimono
Held against
A mother's heart,
Sliced to the bone.
