"Are you ready?" he murmured. The angel looked down at me. My heartbeat was deafening to my own ears, no doubt it was all he could hear.
My breath caught in my throat as his lips pressed gently against mine. "Yes," I said breathlessly when his lips left mine. I was ready, but he was not.
"This is the most selfish thing I'll ever do," his voice was full of anguish. "I only hope one day you can forgive me."
His kissed me once again before moving his lips down to my neck. I closed my eyes; waiting for the fire I knew would come. As his teeth sank into my neck, I only felt relief. His venom entered my bloodstream, claiming me as his – forever. Each flame that licked my skin brought me one step closer to him, to my heaven. This pain was nothing compared to the pain of … but I could not finish that sentence.
Screams filled the air, but it wasn't until I felt him wrap his arms around me that I realized it was me screaming. His cold skin quelled the flames, but only momentarily.
"I'm so sorry," he murmured.
I opened my eyes, searching for his face. The angel wept; his tearless sobs shaking the bed.
"Shhh," I comforted him. "Angels should not weep. It will be over soon."
He hummed my lullaby. I closed my eyes again and tried to fight against the pain that was now unbearable. I screamed until my throat was raw.
"Forgive me," the angel gasped.
But there was nothing to forgive. Even if he was right and we had no souls, even if I was doomed to spend an eternity in hell, it would be worth it. As long as he was with me, I didn't need heaven.
