"Ever wonder what things might've been like?" he asked.

She glanced up at him, confused. "What do you mean?"

"If we met under different circumstances," he replied, playing a card. "Like in high school or somethin'."

She snorted delicately as she picked up from the deck. "You wouldn't have looked at me twice."

"What, were you some kind of hideous freak of nature?"

"Nope," she replied, studied her hand and then putting down a run of three. "Just never left the library."

"Re-al-ly?" he asked, stretching the word out into an obscene purr as he played a card on each end of her spread, drew a card and added to his own hand. "You know, I've always wanted to do it in the stacks…"

She rolled her eyes as she took a card from the deck. "Do you ever not think about sex?"

"Sure," he answered easily.

"When?" she challenged, laying down a straight.

He picked up a card, played two on her straight and looked her in the eye. "When I'm thinking about you."

"Good to know I've officially lost my appeal," she said with forced cheer as she drew from the deck and played a card on his two.

"That's not what I meant," he said, taking a card for himself and indicating it was her turn.

"Oh, so it's something that starts with an 'f' and ends with 'ucking' then?" she said dryly, taking a card but not putting anything down. "Classy, O'Reily, very classy."

"I don't think about that when I think of you," he insisted, calmly plucking a card from the deck, placing it in his hand, and studying his options. "Been there, done that, jerked off to the soundtrack."

"Waaay more information than I needed," she scolded.

"Hey, you brought it up," he pointed out.

"Then forget I even asked," she retorted.

"Too late." His eyes flicked from the fan of his cards to her face and he smirked.

She met his gaze and pulled at the collar of her scrubs, suddenly warm in spite of the air-conditioning blasting through the vents.

He leaned in, gradually closing the distance between them as he laid down three eights.

"I think about kissing you…touching you…all over…"

She blushed hotly, ran her fingers under her jaw where her pulse was accelerating with each breath.

He put down the jack of hearts.

"Holding you close…falling asleep with you…"

Her mouth went dry and she had trouble swallowing.

He put down the queen of hearts.

"Waking up next to you…going down on you for hours…"

She closed her legs, pressed her knees together, hard.

He put down the king to complete the straight.

"Until the only word you can remember is my name…"

Her knuckles went white and she almost folded the cards in half as she gripped them.

"Yeah…like that," he said, his eyes boring into hers as he played his final three cards. "Just. Like. That."

She bit her lip, looking at all of the cards she hadn't been able to play, the trio of aces he'd used to go out, the hot, solemn promise in his cool green eyes.

He'd won this round.

God help her, she needed a drink.
