I recently became determined to write a drabble. As a writer of epic fanfiction, I have always had respect for writers who can do drabbles, but the skill elludes me. What I ended up with was a body of ficlets mostly too long for drabble-length but shorter than even the usual length of my rare short fics. Some are connected to my Rediscovered Hearts AU and some are just random. So I'm just going to post each one separately because there's no rhyme or reason to them so it doesn't make sense to do a "collection".

Father Figure

General Hammond was one of those people who used the word "son" as a casual form of address. He meant it affectionately; he cared for subordinates and not only did he want their trust, he had earned it. He probably had no idea how much that simple word meant to Daniel on the occasions that the general spoke it to him. Maybe he did. Once, Daniel had watched (invisibly) while Hammond spoke to his granddaughter, Kayla, on the phone. Daniel's whereabouts were unknown at the time, and the General told the little girl that he couldn't come to her school play because "a friend of his" was missing and probably in trouble. Then he told her that he and this "friend" were very close. That had taken Daniel by surprise; at that point, he hadn't been sure exactly how the general felt about him. As years passed, there were other moments like that—not just involving Daniel but many other members of the SGC. That hadn't made the moment any less important; it hadn't lessened the impact of that word. Daniel's family was a hodge-podge of people connected by a Stargate, but they were every bit a family.
