"Bones, I have a question,"

Brennan looked up. Booth was standing in her doorway, holding up a book.

"What's that, Booth?" she asked.

He moved into her office, and she saw that the book he was holding was her own.

"I finally read your new book," he said.

"What did you think of it?" Brennan asked coolly, trying not to show him how much his opinion mattered.

"Well I just have one question," he flopped on her couch, and she joined him there. "It's about Kathy and FBI Special Agent Andy Lister. At the end of the book, it's implied that they hook up."

Brennan avoided his eyes.

"So?"

"So, what's going to happen to them? Is it just going to be a casual fling, or is it going to be a permanent relationship."

"It's… complicated."

"Complicated?" he raised an eyebrow.

Brennan fought to maintain composure.

"They're… going to be permanent," she blurted out. "Kathy loves him."

Booth smiled and leaned back.

"I thought so. And I think Lister loves her back."

And Brennan understood.

"It wasn't just a fling, Booth."

He smiled.

"I know, Bones. It was love. It always has been."

Life imitating art. How fitting, Brennan thought.
