He always left before she woke up.
They were lovers. Every night he'd sneak inside her apartment and spend it with her. They would stay in her bedroom. He would turn off the lights and she would snuggle up at him.
Night was quiet and calm. There were no nightmares whenever he was with her, he told her. In her arms, he was safe. He was not going to get hurt.
Sakura loved having him in her arms. She loved him with all of her heart.
It was a relationship that was strange and exciting. They did not say a word to each other whenever they were in public. They did not spend any time together during the day. The day was not their territory. Under the cloak of night and darkness, they resumed their love.
She waited for him by her windowsill. Summer or winter, he would come to her. He led her out of the window once and into the spring night. They took a walk in the cherry groves and they made love as cherry petals rained on them.
"You look like a flower," he'd whispered into her ear. She'd blushed but did not laugh. It did not matter what it looked like to other people. Their relationship was true and beautiful. Their love was real.
She would wait for him every night. She would welcome him into her bed and into her heart.
Whenever he couldn't come because he was busy, she would feel sad and angry. He was gone for days sometimes. She'd cry at night but she would keep busy during the day. She would smile and pretend that she was happy. She cried inside her heart.
She hadn't realized that she loved him so much that she was lost without him.
Tonight was one of those nights.
He was going on a mission. He was gone at the crack of dawn.
Sakura smiled sadly as she remembered his unbridled passion. He'd kissed and hugged her as if to make up for his absence. It was an unspoken agreement between them to never mention the world that lay outside the four walls of their bedroom.
She picked up their blanket and hugged it to her chest. Without thinking, she took a deep breath. His smell still clung to it. She felt calmed by the familiar scent.
Sakura lay down on the bed and hugged the blanket to her chest. He did not realize that she was awake when he left. She recalled the tender way he touched her hair and the soft words that he'd said.
"I'll be here when you wake up... someday," he'd whispered to her. She'd felt a kiss on her forehead. Then he was gone.
She smiled. "I'll miss you until you get back, Sasuke."
