A Demon Lord's Cry
Chapter Twenty-One: Have a Little Faith

x . . . . x

She ran hard and fast through the halls, her training to be a good Lady flying from her head as she went. Kagome didn't care if it wasn't proper for her to run because all that was going through her mind was to get away. She air had been suffocating in the dining room and she had gone hot. She had to get outside where it was cooler.

She knew the Western Citadel like she knew her own home by now and she instantly knew the quickest route. Tears threatened to slide down her cheeks but she held them fast, not wanting to cry in front of the servants who already had begun to whisper. Kagome reached a hall and rushed down it, sliding open the door. Light blurred her vision and she took a deep breath, allowing the remnants of winter to fill her lungs. Lifting her robes, she dashed through the snow and to a place she had only been once before, veering from the path that was set before her. Crashing through the bare branches Kagome dropped to her knees, the soft snow melting beneath her and soaking her kimono.

Wrapping her arms around her Kagome took a deep breath and cried.

She didn't feel as though she were over reacting.

Not in the slightest.

Takeshi was so full of hate for his sire that it just had to be him to kill the man that raised him.

He just couldn't let it go.

He had to run back to the place that would damn him and destroy him rather than stay within the protective embrace of the Western House.

She had fought for him not even a few days prior.

And he wanted to return and possibly die?

She had faith in her guard.

She had seen him fight against Sesshoumaru and walk away with few injuries but this was entirely different. If one thing – one thing – went wrong then he could be gone to her.

What upset her more was that he was willing to take the risk.

Did it matter if he was the end to his father as long as it was done?

Was his vengeance all that he cared for?

Moments passed as she cried until she was unsure of why she was crying.

As she pressed her back against a familiar tree an aura brushed against her own. Surprise registered on Kagome's features, her cheeks flushed from the cold, with dried tear tracks along them. She turned toward the source of the aura, sensing him before he actually got there. After several breaths there he was, the Western Lord, looking as indifferent as always, in his hands lay a crimson blanket.

Kagome observed him as he walked forth and dropped the blanket haphazardly on her shoulders. Before she could thank him or say anything to him in response he spoke, his voice sounding more arrogant than it had in a very long while, "If you are going to subject yourself to this chill then at the very least you could have gone properly attired. The last thing I should be doing is hunting you down to ensure you do not catch cold."

Sputtering and wiping her eyes Kagome puckered her lips outward angrily, "Hunting me down?"

The taiyoukai deemed this moment as one of the rare times he would sigh as he settled beside her, back straight against the tree, one leg bent to hold his arm whereas the other sprawled before him, "You left rather quickly for a ningen."

Turning away from him Kagome looked down at her lap, "I don't want to talk about it."

Sesshoumaru scoffed, gazing at the miko with demanding citrine hues, "Nonetheless, we will discuss it."

Anger coursed through Kagome as she glared up at the Western Lord, "But I don't w - " Sesshoumaru's eyes lit against the sunlight that bathed them, giving them a glow that Kagome would have feared once so long ago. Instead her breath caught and she lost words and Sesshoumaru mistakenly took her silence for affirmation and pushed on.

His voice wasn't harsh when he pushed on, it was curious, "Why do you cry, miko? You know the story of your guards past – of his mother." He paused and she made no sound so he continued, "For a great many years he has lived with the knowledge that the man who murdered his mother lives and there was nothing that could be done because of the clan's relationship with the Western House. He had given up hope long ago that he would kill his father and you want to take away his vengeance?"

Lips that were pursed, suddenly snapped open and Kagome's eyes were bright and angry, "Vengeance? Does he love his vengeance so much that he would risk his life? That he would abandon us in our time of need? He can be killed! They will aim all their power at him if they realize he is there. They will take him and they will kill him and he will be a damned ghost. Dead. Living in my memories."

Sesshoumaru's citrine hues sharpened on her person for just a moment, "Abandoning us or abandoning you?"

"Both!" she screamed. "He's my friend and I don't want them bringing me his mangled body! I would fight you too if you tried to leave!" Something flashed in his eyes and Kagome back peddled for just a moment, a sharp gasp leaving her lips. "You are going." She whispered hoarsely before more tears cascaded down her cheeks, "Why? Why? Why?" she asked hoarsely, "We almost died, can't you see that? Why are you going back?"

Voice solemn, eyes starring directly into hers, "A good leader never asks of his men what they themselves are not willing to do. I have led many attacks into battle, many secret assassinations, and it is because of my willingness to fight beside my men that they are willing to die for me or my cause."

With a sniffle and with a cry Kagome turned away from the Western Lord, whispering softly, almost pleading, knowing already what was next, "You can't take Inuyasha with you."

Sesshoumaru shook his head, "He will come because with him our chances of survival increase exponentially. Tetsusaiga is an asset and it would pure idiocy if I do not take him with us."

Her voice was soft that he almost missed what she said, "If it all goes bad, I can't lose all three of you."

"It will not go badly." His voice was confident and Kagome glanced up at him. "Why are you so convinced?"

Brokenly she informed him, "I fought Isamu and he was a but a child. I know exactly how fierce the Obsidian Inu are, Sesshoumaru-sama. I know that the compound is filled with warriors and I know that I had nightmares while I was unconscious of them taking away both you and Takeshi." Wrapping the crimson blanket tighter around herself she looked at him with haunted blue eyes, "I know am scared for you to beard that den and you're taking two of the most important people in my life."

Sesshoumaru looked skyward, watching a branch as the snow on it began to drip and melt as the weather began to heat. He briefly closed his eyes and without opening them, he very slowly offered her his hand. Tentatively, she reached for it and he grasped it gently. He was quiet and unmoving for a several minutes and Kagome allowed the heat of his hand to warm hers. Opening his eyes, he looked toward her and finally informed her, "This pessimism is unlike you. Your fear of what happened there is blinding you. Have faith, Kagome. We will return." Sometimes Sesshoumaru forgot that Kagome was just a child in so many ways. She held herself befitting one of her station that he often treated her as though she was older than she was. "Tell me of these nightmares and we will alleviate these fears."

Hand tightening on Sesshoumaru's, Kagome began to tell the Western Lord of what ailed her during those times she slept, during the many unconscious hours she lay locked in her nightmares.

Kagome confided in Sesshoumaru and she had never felt better when she was done; leaning upon her Western Lord figuratively and literally with her head on his shoulder.

.

It was mid-day when Sesshoumaru led Kagome into the house, her hand tucked into the crook of his arm. She looked drained but the stress in her eyes had faded and had been tamed. He led her quietly to her rooms and stood outside the door when he reached them.

Turning to face her he looked down at the miko and placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, "It will all be well in the end. Do you want me to send company to you?"

With a smile that was as brittle as it was bright, she asked, "Sango and Himeno-san, please?"

Tentatively, the Western Lord brought the hand on her shoulder to rest lightly on top of her head before he nodded, "We will convene in the War Room in two hours to discuss tactics in regards to the Obsidian and Cardinal Ladies." When the miko nodded, Sesshoumaru removed his hand from her head and turned away. Kagome watched his retreating back for several long moments and then she disappeared inside her room, waiting for Sango and Himeno.

She did not wait long as Sango burst into the room with a look that was all the righteous indignation of a best friend and sister, "I do not understand how you deal with this! All the men and - and the politics! Do you want me to kick Takeshi-san's ass, Kagome? I will! How dare he ask something so difficult of you!" The tajiya moved to Kagome, taking her in her arms and Kagome breathed a sigh.

"I understand why." she murmured as a knock came to the door. "Come in!" Himeno entered then with a plate full desserts and tea and Kagome smiled gratefully. "Hello, Himeno-san!"

Himeno smiled back, "Kagome-sama, Sango-sama. Sesshoumaru-sama said that you were in need of company and after this morning I thought it best that company is better had when there are sweets."

Himeno lay the tray at the table that occupied a part of the room and Kagome and Sango took their seats among the pillows and blankets, helping Himeno set everything up. While this happened, Kagome fully told Sango everything that had been happening in the West just as she had told Inuyasha and when she was done half the sweets and the pot of tea were gone.

Sango looked at Kagome horrified, "You have never hinted any of this in your letters. I know of what you told me when you first came here, and some of the stuff when we arrived but Kagome - all of this? What will you do?"

"Takeshi, Inuyasha, and Sesshoumaru must go. I have no choice in this matter." Kagome looked at her friend and at her adviser and spoke, "I have done my best these past few months and I have done moderately well but there are still things of war and sacrifice that I do not understand - that I will not understand because I am not the general that Takeshi and Sesshoumaru are. In some ways I don't want to understand. Takeshi's choice - I don't want to deal with it. I have dealt with enough."

Her voice was strong and her eyes were hard and somewhere inside Sango wondered - was this what had become of her Kagome?

This Lady that was slowly having the softness worn from her?

.

It was hard not to notice him.

He lurked in the shadows that cast around her, his aura so melancholic that it threatened to consume her in its depths.

It was as though he was silently begging, Notice I am here. I have not yet abandoned you - I'm sorry. Sorry. Sorry.

Yet she didn't reach out to him.

She couldn't. Despite the discussion with Sesshoumaru - she outright refused.

Her heart ached and ached.

Her lungs burned and burned.

Her eyes formed tears that would not fall as she made her way to the war room - his pain and silent apology echoing within her head.

Before opening the elaborate door, Kagome paused, her fingers pressed gently to the elaborate handle. Her eyes slid to the shadow that she knew he lurked within and shook her head. The shadow flared for a moment and then the youki was gone from it entirely. Steeling herself, Kagome entered the war room and closed the door with a soft click.

Takeshi prepared himself for battle with a hole in his heart.

.

Inuyasha looked at the door, lips turned into a scowl as the maid at his side patiently waited for him to enter.

"Do you know what the fuck this is about?" he finally asked after several moment of tense silence.

The youkai maid shook her head and murmured, "I do not, Inuyasha-sama. I was given instruction to lead you to the war room by Sesshoumaru-sama."

His golden hues slid to her as he scoffed, his stomach a tangle of nerves.

What could his fucking asshole of a brother want with him in his war room?

Seeing as he had put it off longer than intended, Inuyasha took a deep breath and pushed open the door, the chatter inside dying quickly.

His cheeks colored as all eyes turned to him and he curled his lips back in distaste. A small hand on his arm stopped him from saying anything brash and he looked to see Kagome's smiling face.

"Inuyasha! I did not know you were coming! Come and sit beside me." Silently grateful for her saving him, Inuyasha nodded stiffly and was led to a seat beside her, effectively placing her in between himself and Sesshoumaru. There were four others beside the three that sat at the table and Inuyasha glanced at each person as though to say, 'I'm here, what of it?'

The door opened again and Inuyasha turned to see who entered and blanched. Kagome's hand was back and tightened on his arm in both warning in comfort. The hanyou looked at Sesshoumaru and then at the youkai that entered and balked at their similarities.

The woman could only be his mother.

Her nose twitched and her lips curled, but the youkai made no notion that she registered he was there.

She took a seat between several other youkai and Sesshoumaru nodded his head and began by looking to Inuyasha.

"Inuyasha - the people before you are advisers and leaders of sects within my house. You have met Ichiro-san. He is our resident strategist, Shigure-san is our politician, Akihiro-san is Captain of the Guard, Cerdwin-san is the leader of spies and assassins, otherwise known as the Ravens, and my mother, Mizuki-san, is currently our temporary internal affairs. Our ambassador is on a mission for the miko and should return in the next few days." Inuyasha inclined his head at each, a little unsure and confused as to what was happening. Sesshoumaru looked down at his brother and then to his team of advisers and stated, "Inuyasha will be honorary adviser for the duration of his stay."

There was a strangled gasp from Ichiro and he turned to Sesshoumaru, "Sesshoumaru-sama, may I speak freely?" Sesshoumaru nodded and Ichiro spoke with just a hint of incredulity, "You have tried to kill this hanyou more often than not, my lord, and now you want to make the stain on this house an honorary member of your advisers?"

It was quiet for several moments and Inuyasha spoke, directly to Sesshoumaru, "I don't get what's going on Sesshoumaru. What are you trying to do here? We can barely - "

"Silence." Sesshoumaru growled to Inuyasha whom stopped speaking but only after Kagome offered him a quick but confused smile. Sesshoumaru turned to address his strategist, "Inuyasha is an invaluable asset in everything that we are going through. We have those in the West that want to destroy us - and I am not talking of Obsidian. Do not forget that there are those working internally to fight us. The Obsidian want to have all-out battle - and a Cardinal Lady has turned on her mate. We are well and truly in a bind and his help would be an asset." The Western Lord paused and looked at each face before him, "He is an heir of my father despite our grievances in the past. You would all do well to remember that."

"And what has changed, my son?" Mizuki spoke, carefully polishing her claws along a piece of the silken kimono. "Ichiro-san is correct, you have many times attempted to destroy the... boy." It was clear that 'boy' was not the term she had wished to use.

"How it has come to be is none of your concern." he responded airily, waving his hand as though to wave off their concerns. He would not tell them of the night that he grieved and mourned a little girl before his brother. Of the night his guilt was crippling - it was a matter that none of them needed to privy to - not even the miko knew what truly happened there in the snow that night. That the brother he cast aside so many times before had attempted to bridge the gap that had been there before the hanyou had even been born.

His brother was a worthy opponent.

He was a worthy son of their father.

It was time he tried to do right by the boy that had once so long ago come to him for help and he allowed fend for himself.*1*.

"Sesshoumaru-"

The taiyoukai looked to his mother and his eyes were cool, "Do you speak to me as my mother or as a member of the council?"

Delicate lips set into a stern line but she avoided answering the question, "The woman at your side is a miko. She has been an exceptional Western Lady despite her short comings but she is a miko nonetheless. There is another miko, a houshi, and several tajiya wandering within the Western Citadel and now a hanyou is on your council. Our enemies continue to pile because of the poor decisions you have made! Your father knew - "

Emotion burst forth from the taiyoukai. Eyes flashing crimson, Sesshoumaru stood, "My father disgraced us. He abandoned this house. It was taken back with blood. It was won in blood. Do not forget, mother, that he cast you aside." He looked at Ichiro next, "He cast you all aside to be tortured and killed. He died defending a woman and hanyou - a hanyou he clearly thought had worth, a ningen woman he found his solace in. Do not place the blame in my decisions because it was in fact my father made decisions that set in motion the issues we are experiencing now. If anything this Western Lady, this miko, who was not given to me in choice but by a sheer accident of magic, has done all that she could to take the burden we have thrust upon her. It is the ningen miko that has fought for her people and bled for her people, a people that snub and abuse her."

"They would not abuse her if not for her humanity!" Mizuki screeched back, her anger palpable.

Sesshoumaru's claws dug into the table and tentatively a hand brushed his knuckles. His eyes darted to Kagome whom held nothing but concern in her gaze. He turned back to his mother, "What has caused this? Why argue this now?"

Her eyes burned as she turned to Inuyasha and then back to Sesshoumaru, "You know what."

Looking to his mother he saw the depth of her pain and he shook his head, "Your personal issues are blinding you, mother. Step out of the room and take time to compose yourself."

Mouth agape, Mizuki sputtered, "The hanyou is what you choose over your Mother, the one who birthed you?"

Standing straight, allowing the miko's hand to fall from his, "That is where you are mistaken. I do not make this choice based on blood. I make this choice based upon what is right for these lands. I base this decision upon what you taught me." Eyes hard, he spoke again, "Remove yourself and return when composed."

Standing abruptly, and with as much dignity as she could muster, the former Western Lady turned and left.

Looking at Ichiro Sesshoumaru queried, "Do you have any further arguments?"

The other inuyoukai shook his head of fiery hair and responded, "No, my lord. All my concerns have been quelled."

Returning to a seated position the Western Lord offered a look at Kagome who nodded her head solemnly before turning to his brother, "Inuyasha..." he paused as the brother who looked so much like their father turned to him. "As you know the Obsidian clan will be at our door unless we do not act. Myself and Takeshi-san will be leading a small team of Ravens into the compound where we will discretely eliminate the Obsidian Clan head. You were able, with Tetsusaiga, to make it through the forest much faster than we were able to get out. We have several discrete ways of obtaining the fruit that will allow us time to travel through - but the fruit is not yet ripe and will only allow us a few hours reprieve from the forest. To get out is much different than getting in and with Tetsusaiga we stand a far better chance of surviving."

Inuyasha felt rather than saw Kagome's flinch and he turned curious eyes to friend, "What's wrong?"

Kagome turned hollow eyes to Inuyasha, "The Obsidian are a fearful lot, Inuyasha. If they were not our enemies at this moment I would be thankful they were allies." Reaching out her hand to brush along his arm, she questioned, "Will you go with them, Inuyasha? That is what Sesshoumaru-sama is asking you. Will you follow your brother into this battle?"

Inuyasha looked to the brother that had never asked him for anything.

The brother whom was trying his best to accept him.

And he said, "Yes."

"So it be done." Sesshoumaru murmured turning to address his council. "Cerdwin-san, please gather your five best and have them meet for the morning here. Inuyasha, Akihiro-san, Cerdwin-san, and Ichiro-san, you will also attend this meeting as it is going to be a tactical meet. Ichiro-san, of the forces I have asked for you to recall, take no more than thirty and have them stationed within the Western Walls, and put the rest on standby in the five closest cities. Each city should have a youkai able to manipulate their form to traverse long distances quickly in the event they need to reach us. Shigure-san, ensure that the lower council members are informed of the most recent developments barring any personal information. Make them aware that war can be upon us at any day and that any grievances over land, matings, etc. will be placed on hold and formal requests should be placed into a scroll and sent directly to Nalia-san so that she may review them once we are out of the line of fire. Akihiro-san, you will be placed in charge of the thirty warriors to be placed in the West, make them comfortable in the barracks and place them where you feel they would do best."

The door opened and Mizuki returned, calmer and composed, and she took her seat, "And myself? What will you have me do?"

Turning to his Mizuki, his eyes slowly gauging her mood, Sesshoumaru informed her, "We have not had a chance to conduct a formal investigation on the youkai faction that believes I am not fit to rule. Begin there. We still have a boy in custody. He has been under the care of Ichiro-san and myself but he is still alive. He has not been forthcoming considering he is so young but he is dedicated to his cause. If you need details then speak to the miko and she will provide what knowledge she has of the attack and to Ichiro-san whom was last to speak to Sakumo." Mizuki nodded her head once and Sesshoumaru looked to the people he trusted most. "The assassination group will leave in no more than four days. We will have one last meet that includes those in this room on that fourth day. This meeting is adjourned."

Sesshoumaru stood and motioned for Kagome and Inuyasha to follow him. The two did so and entered behind him in his study. The moment the doors closed Inuyasha burst out, "What the fuck, Sesshoumaru?" As Sesshoumaru sat at his desk, Inuyasha kept on, "Way to keep me in the dark! A little warnin' would've been nice!"

With look that conveyed his exasperation Sesshoumaru began, "You cannot expect me to believe you would not have acted in a manner that was worse than you did had you known beforehand."

Kagome giggled at the expression on Inuyasha's face as she took her place atop her favorite pillows and watched as Inuyasha growled, "I think I behaved considering the circumstances, thanks!"

"Regardless - I..." there was a pause as Sesshoumaru mulled over the word he would use, "...appreciate the assistance you will provide."

Kagome was surprised to see her brash hanyou friend tuck his hands into his sleeves over his chest and mutter almost bashfully, "It's nothing."

"Considering the circumstances and your lack of true training, it best if you train with one of the members of the guard." And just like that moment was dead and Inuyasha scowled. "Who was sent to you to help locate the shards?"

"Her name was Onora." Inuyasha informed him, scowl deepening. "I don't need training."

Surprisingly, it was Kagome who spoke up, "You're right Inuyasha. You don't need training but the people you are going in with are trained in assassination attempts. You move quietly, yes, but have you ever truly assassinated someone?"

Looking at his longtime friend, Inuyasha shook his head, "Never had to."

With a smile she continued, "Then use this as a chance to learn something new! Learn some new techniques!"

With a scrunch of his nose he responded, "Yeah, I guess. Learning new techniques is always pretty good and Onora was alright."

Sesshoumaru watched as the miko and hanyou exchanged words, her knowing exactly what to say as to not offend him in any way. Once they were done he spoke, "Good. I suggest starting this afternoon, hanyou." Unlike in the past, there was little heat to the word. It was just Sesshoumaru addressing his brother in a manner that he always had. Inuyasha's scoff indicated there was no offense taken. "You will be guided to one of the dojos and the female will be taken to you."

Sesshoumaru turned to look at several documents on his desk, clearly dismissing his half-sibling and Inuyasha scoffed, "Anything else, your majesty?"

Without looking up Sesshoumaru responded, "No that will be all." Kagome choked on a laugh and went to walk Inuyasha to the dojo but was stopped by Sesshoumaru. "Not you, miko. You stay."

With a scrunch of her nose, Kagome sighed, "Well, alright." she darted cerulean orbs to her friend and smiled, "The maid outside in the hall, have her take you to the outer dojo on the North end."

Inuyasha nodded and ran a clawed fingertip along her cheek with a grin, "Keh, whatever. See you later."

He turned and left, leaving Kagome with Sesshoumaru whom gestured her back to her comfortable pillows by the softly roaring fire. He followed her and grabbed one of her pillows, maneuvering it so he could be seated in front of her and took a seat. Kagome arched a brow but said nothing at the interesting arrangement and waited for Sesshoumaru to speak.

"Have you spoken to your guard?" he queried. Kagome's eyes darted to the floor which was answer enough for the taiyoukai. "Do not wait so long."

"I can't right now."

His eyes traced her face and she looked at him with eyes that were a darker blue than he had ever seen before. Tentatively he reached a clawed fingertip to trace her cheek just as his brother did not moments before and he watched as the pale flesh burned crimson. Her ningen warmth inflamed his finger. He always made it a point not to touch her too much but she took some modicum of comfort from it so every now and then he offered it.

However, things of mine and yours always became a little blurry for youkai - inuyoukai in particular due to their inherently possessive nature.

And she was his.

His Western Lady.

His partner.

His confidant.

Not his mate.

But his nonetheless.

So now the touches were becoming just as much a comfort to him as they were to her.

He moved his hand to grab hers within his and spoke, "Now it is time for even harder discussions." He watched as she braced herself and gestured for him to continue with a nod of her head. "I am confident we will return, however, it is customary to discuss the what-ifs."

Understanding where this was going Kagome nodded her head, "What if you don't return, you mean." Nodding his head Kagome took a deep breath and prepared, "Then let us begin."

"I had all official documents modified before we left to the compound but let us go over them together." He stood, released her hand, and went to a panel that was hidden in the wall. He tapped it twice with his hand and the panel opened, revealing a chest with a lock and key. He brought the chest out, and it was no longer then the length of his forearm and set it between them before taking his seat once again. "The lock is enchanted." He explained before dipping a hand into the neck of his haori where the beads were hidden behind his clothing and took them out as well as a small silver necklace with a plain silver key. He broke the chain from his neck and offered it to Kagome, "This one is yours. I have another hidden in my rooms which I will show you at a later date. The chest cannot be opened without a key. The chest and lock itself cannot be broken. Do not lose the key."

He paused and gestured for Kagome to open the chest with a wave of his hand and when he did Kagome opened the chest. It clicked ajar and Sesshoumaru took several parchments from its confines and set them aside.

"Let us discuss my will."

With a shuddering breath Kagome watched as Sesshoumaru began to go over which documents were the most important ones and which ones would keep her in power and who she should trust with them.

"In the end miko - if death is to take me during your time you are to keep the Western House until death takes you as well."

"Why me though? Why not your mother?" Kagome questioned, confusion plaguing her features.

Brows furrowed he responded, "It is you who has become Western Lady and you has studied and learned and attempted to keep peace. Do not doubt that you are not a worthy leader because you are not youkai or do not have years of experience. I have placed my faith and my trust in you." Citrine collided with cerulean and Kagome's lips quirked into a smile before laughter erupted from her.

It wasn't a mocking laughter... it was soft and it was warm and it left Sesshoumaru with a feeling of lightness.

"Then I will do everything to ensure your faith and trust have been placed rightly within me."

Her lasting smile haunted Sesshoumaru into his dreams that evening and many evenings after.

.

Takeshi desperately wanted to enter his lady's room but he feared he would not be welcome so as her breathing evened out he took a seat in front of the shoji door and placed his elbows on his knees, tenting his fingers just under his nose. His emerald orbs were closed, dark lashes brushing his cheeks but he was unnaturally in tune to the subtle changes that graced his lady's form. Every move against the sheets, every soft sigh, every little thing - he was aware of it.

Time passed and a quiet - tentative, "Takeshi?" yanked the youkai from his thoughts.

For a moment... he thought he imagined it and when it came again, quieter than before, Takeshi was in the room before he had time to process he was moving.

It was darker in the room than in the hall but he lived in the shadows and was able to make out her form, sitting upright on the bedding.

His mouth was dry and his voice hoarse when he murmured, "You called?"

His nose scented salt long before the tears slid down her cheeks and when she spoke her voice trembled, "I'm so mad."

"I know, Kagome-sama, I know."

"Why?" she asked carefully. "Why must you go?"

The obsidian inu chuckled mirthlessly as he walked toward her bed, toeing off his shoes and shedding his daily armor as he went. It clanked to the floor, almost drowning out the words, "I once told you a story..." his feet touched the covering of her bedding and he continued forth, dropping to his knees in front of her. "...a story of the West." He leaned forward and tentatively touched the back of her hand with his duel-colored claws. "Now..." he began quietly, pleased when she flipped her hand so that his claws brushed her palm. "Now let me tell you the descent into madness of my father."

His voice was bereft of emotion when he began, "When the Great General of the West took me under his wing to give me the life I wanted instead of the life thrust upon me... my father was not pleased. In fact, he was slowly allowing his anger to turn to hate and his hate to turn to into fear and his fear turn into sheer madness. My mother was beautiful... and beauty is a curse in the Obsidian Clan. Beauty made you a whore because you had no other choice and my mother knew... when she birthed me as the third child there was nowhere else for me to go but a soldier or the brothels.

She never wanted the life that my father was forcing on me but she could do little as she was in a similar life. My father slaked his lust with her and when he was finished he would send her to all who had the coin. When the General came for me... she was more than relieved. When we left the compound - it was the last time I saw my mother.

Because I was taken from him and my father is a possessive man he immediately set to finding the best way to hurt me and it was through my mother. He sent my mother to do her duty and informed her that she had been purchased by a youkai who was living hidden amongst the ningen and missed the company of youkai females. It was not the first time she had a request such as this but - but it was her last. It was a trap - there were no youkai. Merely men and a miko. They bound her - and they defiled her. The miko allowed for this - she allowed this because she felt it was better a youkai whore than her and when they were done the miko killed her."

His voice was harsh and his breath was panting and he whispered his sorrow and untold pain into the darkness of the night, he licked his dry lips and murmured, "God help me... but I need to kill that man more than I need to..." His mind whispered, more than I need to make you happy. But instead he said, "...breathe."

Her fingers trembled when she whispered, "Oh Takeshi..."

But he said nothing as he wrapped his hands around her waist and dragged him toward her, needing every little modicum of comfort she could provide. His arms wound themselves around her, his nose and claws buried in her hair as he did everything he could to release the anger and hatred that burned in his heart.

"Do you see?" he asked hoarsely, emerald hues begging for her to understand, closing his eyes. "Can you understand why?"

And she did. Heaven help her, she did.

Sango, Miroku, and even Inuyasha all hunted Naraku to kill him not because of the Shikon shards but because of vengeance.

Who was she to begrudge him that?

Wrapping her own arms around him, she allowed him to take his comfort in her embrace and responded quietly, "I understand."

But the words tasted like acid in her mouth.

.

Kagome woke slowly.

She blinked the vestiges of sleep from her eyes and burrowed deep into the warmth of her blankets.

She gazed at the small fire pit in the middle of the room that was slowly dwindling to ask and smoke and she sighed. Last night had taken much from her, almost too much. Lips pursed she sat up and ran a hand through her tangled hair and gazed around the room. Her eyes fell upon an elegant table filled with parchment and papers and a few knick-knacks she had brought from home. She stood from the blankets, gathering her sleep kimono as she went. Sock-clad feet made their way across the wood flooring and she stopped at the desk and grasped the parchment wrapped packages.

Her eyes softened and she clutched each one to her chest.

She gathered her hair in a bun and changed into one of her less extravagant kimonos. No trains, no layers, just simple, comfortable, yet still elegant one. It was black with hints of blue, and dark yellow blossoms littering the hem and sleeves. She tucked the packages into her obi and then disappeared out of the room, almost barreling over Himeno who was coming to wake her.

"Kagome-sama! Where - "

Kagome waved to her but continued to walk quickly from the room, "No time to chat, Himeno-san!"

"B-but breakfast a-and you have lessons -"

Kagome turned around but didn't stop walking, "Reschedule lessons for after lunch and I will grab something from the kitchens!" The miko turned a corner and Himeno was left blinking at what the young leader could possibly be doing at such an early hour and in such a hyperactive state. Lips curling to a smile, she walked into the bedroom and began to make the bed and cull the already low fire.

.

Kagome went to Inuyasha first. He was already making use of the dojo with the female that had helped gather shards. Inuyasha was cursing as the hare was clearly much faster than he was and when he would go to strike, she would move and no longer be where he thought. They were currently fighting hand to hand and though he was fairly proficient in it... Inuyasha did not have formal training. Kagome often described his hand-to-hand as street brawling more than anything.

Inuyasha took a deep steadying breath and his nose twitched, catching Kagome's scent on the air. He turned to greet her and the hare took advantage of the distraction and her foot collided with his cheek, sending him sprawling to the ground several yards away.

"The fuck you do that for?" Inuyasha yowled as he sat up and touched his reddening cheek.

The hare skipped over to him, her little tail wiggling and ears twitching as she squealed getting close and closer to his face excitement, "I got ye! I got ye! Nev'r und'restimate the quickness o' a hare!"

Inuyasha's face flared crimson for a different reason as he jumped away from the hare with a 'keh'.

Kagome's eyes fell upon the chestnut haired creature and drank in the toned body of what was clearly a warrior. She had to remind herself that Onora was one of Akihiro's people and she was a warrior no matter how bright and happy she appeared, no matter how lovely she was to look at - she was dangerous. And she was sure this was Onora - she had a little bunny tail. How many hares could really be in the Western House?

Inuyasha made his way to Kagome, leaving behind the other woman whom followed at a much more subdued pace, her eyes dark and uncertain. She had never met Kagome after all. She had only heard the stories that a powerful miko was Western Lady and that she was to follow her orders explicitly.

Inuyasha greeted Kagome with a smile and open arms to which Kagome readily jumped into, pressing her cheek to his chest and taking in his scent before pulling away.

"I see you're up bright and early - and you're not even the slightest bit grouchy, wench!"

Kagome huffed as she crossed her arms, "Well if you didn't wake me up so loudly every morning I would be just fine thank you!" For good measure she swatted his chest and he gave her a quick grin. Kagome turned to the hare and she observed the other woman closely as the female bowed deeply to her.

She had seen the way Inuyasha's cheeks brightened when the woman came close.

It sure wasn't from embarrassment.

Kagome nodded at Onora and the hare quickly introduced herself, "I'm Onora, Kagome-sama! It's nice tah mee' ye!"

With another incline of her head Kagome responded, "It's a pleasure to meet you as well." Strange accent though, Kagome wondered. She turned to Inuyasha and her smile returned, "How have you been enjoying the training?"

Inuyasha's face brightened and Kagome couldn't help the swell of happiness that erupted inside her, "It's great! It's challenging but you were right, wench, having formal training will definitely help and then you just wait! Naraku won't stand a chance!"

Kagome's eyes softened and she turned to Onora, "Would you mind if I borrowed him for just a few minutes. I have something to give him."

Onoro smiled and shook her head, "Not ah all, Kagome-sama!"

Kagome smiled her thanks and took Inuyasha's elbow as she ushered him outside of the dojo and into the bright sun. There were a few patches of snow and the day was certainly warmer than other days and Kagome took a deep breath as she smelled the scent of spring. She turned to her dear hanyou friend and took out a parcel. Her lips were curled into a smile and she offered it to him, "Here Inuyasha - this is for you."

Inuyasha looked down at the small package and tilted his head to the side, "What is it?"

Kagome rolled her eyes and shook her head, "A gift. Open it."

Tentatively, he reached his hands outward and grasped the package between his claws. It was not unusual for Kagome to bring him gifts but usually they were food items from her time. The only other real gift had been the gold locket she had given him several years ago. It was an item he still cherished and wore to this day.

Slowly, he ripped the paper open and gold eyes widened as he took in the dark length of material in front of him. It was a sash so black in color that no light reflected off it. The material was soft and cool to the touch and reminded him of his fire rat robes, "K-Kagome. This must have cost a fortune!"

The miko offered Inuyasha a smile, "Western Lady here, you remember that right?" Kagome took the sash from him, knowing that he was likely to be difficult about this like he was everything else and began to tie it around his waist. "I bought it months ago, to be honest, and waited for the right time to give it you. The vendor I purchased it from said it was like an enchanted blade. This sash has certain properties, like Tetsusaiga does, and can unleash devastating attacks. There is lingering youki from the creature killed to make this sash and when the youki is channeled into an attack of yours or Tetsusaiga's youki then an attack will be unleashed." She straightened the sash out and pulled away, "This particular sash will offer ground based attacks so you will never be without a weapon if you are ever unable to reach Tetsusaiga in time and it's just you and your claws." Kagome looked at Inuyasha and was met with stunned silence and so she quietly asked, "Do you not like it?"

The hanyou was silent and very gently reached out and brought Kagome into the circle of his arms. Kagome leaned into his embrace and allowed the comfort of being in the arms of her closest friend flow over her.

None would ever understand the bond between the two.

Inuyasha had willing bled for Kagome, a hundred times over, and Kagome willing threw herself into dangerous positions to protect him.

Their bond was a shared, quiet love of friends that had once loved each other but just couldn't make it work and for that they each held a special place in the others heart.

Inuyasha tightened his arms around her briefly before he pulled away, "I love it. It's - it's - " he took a deep breath and tried to put into words how it was the nicest and most thoughtful thing he had ever received but such a feat was difficult for the hanyou who found it very difficult to be emotional.

But like always, Kagome understood, "No words necessary, Inuyasha..." her lips quirked into a smile. "I understand." She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath before she turned her head to look at him again. "In the West, we have a saying that we pass along to our warriors when they go into battle. It's a prayer, a wish, a blessing to do what needs to be done, and finally a hope to come home all into one." Placing her hands on his shoulders, she leaned up and pressed her lips to his cheek, quietly murmuring, "Peace be with you should you fall."

Tears filled her eyes because deep down she knew - she hadn't wanted to forgive Inuyasha for choosing to leave the safety of the Western Citadel to fight the Obsidian and she didn't really want to but she wouldn't let Inuyasha go into battle thinking that he had hurt her. It was all she could think to tell him instead of saying, 'It's okay that you chose to fight. I understand that he is your brother and needs you. Just come back home safe.'

She steeled herself and Inuyasha responded by wrapping his arms around her again, holding him tightly to her chest, murmuring nothing more than, "Thank you."

Desperately, she whispered, "The Western House is home now, Inuyasha, and damn it - you fight to come back here, to come home."

With a sense of belonging the hanyou clutched her tighter, "I will. No matter what, wench, I'm coming back... always."

With that said, Kagome pulled away and nodded her head, "You better." Inuyasha chuckled and Kagome ushered the hanyou back into the dojo, "Go - enjoy your training and see if you can find out more about your sash."

Inuyasha made a quiet sound of agreement and went back to continue his training.

Kagome took a breath and her previous soft eyes were hard when she turned and began to walk away. Her voice was quiet but firm when she stated, "I know you're there, come out."

There was a quick rustle to her right and Kikyo stepped out from the underbrush. Gray eyes were dark and cold as they observed the lively miko. Kikyo was cool as she stepped in front of Kagome, "I did not think you would sense me - Inuyasha didn't."

Kagome's lips curled downward as she brought a hand to the center of her chest, "I always know when you're near." Kagome observed the other miko coolly, "What is it, Kikyo-san?"

Kikyo's eyes darted to the dojo and she informed her incarnation, "He likes that creature in there."

For a moment Kagome was confused, "Onora-san? I would hope so... she is training him."

Kikyo shook her head and a shinidamachu whined over head, "Not like that... Inuyasha finds that creature attractive."

Kagome thought back to the when Onora had definitely broken into his space that morning during training and his face was redder than his clothing and her eyes widened, "Oh." It would make sense. Onora was a lovely thing to look at, long tan limbs, chestnut hair, foreign - oh yes, she could see it. In all the time she and Inuyasha had been companions, he had shown interest in two people. Kikyo and herself. Even though they were friends she still waited for jealousy or annoyance to flood through her but it didn't and for that she was grateful. Under no circumstance did she want Inuyasha to be put into an uncomfortable position. The only feeling running through her was the burning desire to ensure that the hare was a worthy companion to her friend.

That's all.

So she turned back to Kikyo and frowned, "And this is a problem?"

Kikyo's smokey eyes darkened and her brows furrowed with anger, "You blatantly showed your disapproval of Inuyasha and myself but allow him to show interest in some animal?"

Kagome shook her head, "Onora-san is not an animal - she's a hare." Kagome took a deep breath and steadied herself for the oncoming anger of the other miko, "Once my love for Inuyasha waned to what it is now, I never once showed disapproval. Inuyasha loved you - probably loves you still - and I could never ask him to stay away from you. The only thing I ever fought for and would still fight for is for him to stay alive, not throw his life away, and jump into hell with you."

Kikyo's voice was strained and Kagome thought she detected the threat of tears, "He promised me!" Kikyo cried out with a shuddering sigh. "He promised he would come with me and it was you that ruined it! Always you!"

Kagome's anger took root and she stepped closer, "You love him and ask him to spend eternity in a life of endless torture - never able to reincarnate! How can you ask him that? You and I both know that when you descend your soul will return back to me - and when I die, I will likely go to heaven due to my miko status but you ask that he suffer alone." Kagome's breath was harsh pants and she nodded her head, "Yes, Kikyo - I will fight that with every fiber of my being. I will not let that be his fate and if he shows interest in another woman then I am happy. I am happy that he is moving on from the love you and he shared because it means he is more likely to stay."

Clearly, Kikyo did not know of Inuyasha's decision to not descend into hell.

And Kagome would keep it that way until he was ready to confess.

"He deserves it! For letting me die as I did! He promised me his life once - was going to be ningen for me - and I intend to take it from him one way or another."

Kagome took several more steps until she was face to face with Kikyo, "Remember one thing and one thing only... if you hurt Inuyasha, threaten his happiness or his life, in any way - I will make it so you wish you were dead." Her eyes were hard and tendril of power curled through them, "You have done so much to hurt him - hurt our friends - that I promise it will not be merciful. You say you took the jewel to Naraku in order to kill him... he lives Kikyo. All this time and Naraku lives and has been more powerful for it because of you. You tried to take my life multiple times and I will not let you try again." There was a hint of pleading in her voice, "Please, Kikyo, do not make me have to come after you. It would devastate Inuyasha, but it would devastate you more to know that Inuyasha would forgive me in the end, whether he is alive or dead."

Kikyo's voice was strained, "You have changed - no longer are you that weak child that stumbled around."

Kagome nodded her head, "I was once told by my guard that if I was survive here then I would have to be cruel (2). In order to protect Inuyasha I will be every bit as ruthless and cruel as I need to be." Tentatively, Kagome touched the other miko's shoulder and held it tight, voice gentle, "Don't make me be that way, Kikyo. Not only do I not want to be that way but you will not like the results. I saved you once... saved you to keep the heart of the boy I loved from breaking. Now I will hurt you to keep the heart of the boy I loved beating." Kagome's other hand grasped Kikyo's other shoulder and she informed her, "If you could just learn to live better life - a life not built on hate then I would help you. I would keep Sesshoumaru-sama from killing you in order to return the soul inside you to me. You would have a place among the West - there are always unruly youkai, villages that need help... if you wanted to live the life of an ordinary woman then I would help you. You just - " her voice broke. " - you just couldn't hurt Inuyasha."

Kikyo was stiff for a moment before pulling away from the younger miko, "You have given me much to think about. I will return to my rooms." Kikyo's eyes met Kagome's and the younger of the two saw something in those cold depths that made her heart ache for Kikyo. She saw, for the first time... hope. Kikyo inclined her head to Kagome, "Kagome-sama."

A smile threatened to split her cheeks and Kagome inclined her head back, "Kikyo-sama."

She watched Kikyo walk away and Kagome turned to locate her next target: Takeshi.

She cast one look back at the dojo and felt a little lighter than she had before.

She stayed on the path she was currently on and made her way toward the outer houses where Akihiro resided. Takeshi's house was not far from Akihiro's and she knew where it was though she had never been there. He had never invited her and she had not felt inclined to intrude but now? Now she was on a mission and she knew that he would be there, prepping for his trip.

The melting snow sloshed around her feet and icicles melted in the trees around her. The sun was bright and keeping her warm in the damp morning. Lips curling happily she continued on her way for several minutes until finally she reached her destination. She observed the home and noted that it was the same design as the harem house - just smaller. Slowly she ascended the four stairs that took her to the front door and she rapped on it quickly.

There was no sound on the other side but the door opened and Kagome was met with bare chest.

She blinked once before a blush enveloped her cheeks.

She had seen Inuyasha's chest several times and by now she had also seen Sesshoumaru's.

She had also seen Takeshi's once but that was during his whipping when she first arrived.

Never - never had she seen Takeshi's chest as it was now, heaving and slicked with sweat.

Tilting her gaze upward, she met confused emerald hues and she bashfully wiggled her fingers at him as his brows furrowed, "Kagome-sama? What brings you here?"

"I came to give you something!" she burst out, her cheeks still crimson.

Takeshi nodded his head and slid the door open further, "Then please, come in." Discarding her shoes at the door, she stepped in beside Takeshi, ignoring the musky scent of sweat and male that he was emitting. She swallowed as Takeshi turned to her and gave her a rueful grin, "Please excuse the mess - I have not had the maids visit in a while." Kagome turned and looked around and found that each surface possible was covered in scrolls, maps, books, and even weaponry. The miko eyed him curiously and his grin dimmed to a smirk, "You forget that I was a general before your guard."

Kagome's eyes were soft when she asked, "Do you regret choosing me that day with Sesshoumaru-sama?"

Their eyes met and Takeshi shook his head, voice strong, "No... I do not."

With a nod, she took several steps toward him, taking note how his hair was tied in a high ponytail, leaving the long strands to touch the small of his back rather than brush just the tips of his thighs like it usually did. His eyes sparkled as she pulled the package from her kimono and offered it to her guard.

The youkai paused but he careful gripped the parcel between his multicolored claws.

"Kagome-sama..." he began as he looked to it and then to her, "... what is this?"

Kagome tugged at the edge of her sleeve before taking a deep breath, "I bought it the day we visited the inner city... I haven't been able to find a time for it until now."

With a nod, he shredded the packaging around the parcel and then he went still.

It was paused breath that he let the packaging fall to the floor, his claws reverently touching the white of the sash and bringing it to his nose to inhale. He could feel the pulse of youki from the sash as he took in the scent of spider and his brows furrowed. The color of the sash was a silver that put the stars to shame.

As he turned to look at Kagome she began to babble in embarrassment, "It's from a spider youkai with fire based properties. I was told they are found deep in the mountains, at the highest points making it difficult for a youkai that cannot fly to obtain them." Takeshi gazed at her with a gentle wonder and content as her cheeks reddened and he took two quick strides to her.

"Kagome-sama?" he murmured. She looked up at him and gave him questioning cerulean hues, "Forgive me, Kagome-sama, but I am going to breech your space and hug you."

Before Kagome could get out a word otherwise, she was brought into strong arms, her cheek pressed against his lightly sweaty chest. Crimson engulfed her cheeks as she for a moment flailed her arms, confused as to how to respond but after a moment she relaxed, her hands placed on his waist. His nose pressed into the crown on her head, lightly inhaling her scent.

He smelled that hanyou on her skin and pressed her tighter to his chest, something primal itching to get rid of the scent that was not her own and cover it in his. Several seconds passed and the inu released her from his arms, looking down at her with something dark and unknown but Kagome did not catch that look as she was too busy trying not to stare at him.

"Thank you, Kagome-sama - your gift... it's extremely thoughtful and..." he paused, holding the item gently in his hands, "...I will treasure it always."

Kagome swallowed and turned fro the door, "It's just a sash!"

Takeshi grinned, "One that came from you!" he called after her as she quickly dashed out of his home and leaving behind a chuckling Takeshi.

.

Kagome rushed down the path, hoping that slightly cool air would make the crimson in her cheeks fade.

Her eyes flashed.

Stupid Takeshi.

He teased her more and more as of late and it was honestly driving her crazy!

She wasn't blind. She knew that Takeshi was handsome and well sought after among the female guards and women throughout the city.

And she wasn't wholly immune to his charm.

Kagome stopped that thought immediately.

Don't even go there, girl.

So she didn't and pushed the thought aside and attempted to go and locate Sesshoumaru.

She stretched her senses and was surprised to feel him not far from her current location. It meant he was outside so she immediately turned to the left and off the worn path and into the snow that was already becoming more slush like as the day passed. Pursing her lips, she broke through the dead brush and trees and made her way to a oddly familiar site.

She looked at the large and imposing tree and her breath caught.

It was where Rin was buried.

Her eyes moved along the area until she saw a Sesshoumaru whom was sitting at the base of the tree, a book in hand.

She had never seen him read which was interesting.

Not a book at least.

It was always a scroll a statement or something pertaining to a part of the land.

Kagome wanted to take a step forward but found herself unable to interrupt the peace and quiet presented before her. Sesshoumaru looked… different seated there on a thick surface as to not let the snow wet him. His shoulders were more rounded, less stiff, and his face was smoother somehow. His legs were stretched before him, one lazily bent at the knee so he could place his hand there, the other stretched full out. Oddly enough, he looked… younger. And almost at peace.

She watched him a few moments longer before it hit her.

He was relaxed, truly, in a way she had never seen.

Carefully, she began to step back and stopped when the taiyoukai flicked the unnatural glow of his eyes toward her. They were, as usual, a bright yellow-gold, that quickly flicked over her form. He turned back to his book, and knowing she was caught, she sheepishly began to walk toward him, carefully, walking around the spot she knew Rin's body lay. The taiyoukai didn't move or say anything but Kagome knew to take her seat at his side, atop of the thick blanket.

As she finished settling, Sesshoumaru closed his book with a hum and turned to look down at her, "You wish to ask me something?" he queried but Kagome shook her head.

This was the hardest gift.

Sesshoumaru didn't need power.

He didn't rely on anything other than himself and even his swords were just an extension of his person.

"If not to question then why have you sought me? I have felt you move all around the Citadel this morning."

Instead of answering, Kagome dipped a hand into her kimono and brought out the last parcel. Her fingers trembled as she held it out to Sesshoumaru, head ducked lightly, crimson over taking her cheeks, "Here." Tentatively, Sesshoumaru reached his hand out and grasped the item, observing it closely. "It's a gift."

Arching a brow in her direction he snorted, "From?"

Taking a deep breath she murmured, "From me."

His brows furrowed, "For what?"

Almost impatient Kagome stated, "Just because that's what for! Now open it before you drive me crazy!" He gave her look and Kagome quickly back-peddled, "Please!" He nodded in her direction and carefully undid the string that that kept the item from unraveling from the butcher paper. It almost made Kagome laugh at how reverently he opened the item and Kagome teasingly asked, "Never receive a gift before?"

Looking at her through the corner of his eye he murmured, "I have not." Kagome's breath caught in her throat at the impossibility of the statement. He was Western Lord, and he never received gifts?

"But how is that possible?"

Sesshoumaru stopped working on removing the paper from the item and turned to look at her, "My people offer 'gifts' as some sort of fealty and other lords offer 'gifts' as a way to stay in grace. My mother never believed in coddling which she passed along to my father. Never have I received an item for the sake of being given something." In a way it was similar to Inuyasha and her heart broke as he continued to carefully work at the item until finally a hint of gold peaked through.

Sesshoumaru delicately pulled the unicorn-hair made sash out of the parcel and delicately sniffed when he caught a hint of Kagome's scent. He brought it to his nose and inhaled deep, receiving a more concentrated dose. He turned to her in confusion and Kagome reached out a hand. The sash reacted and sparked with power and Sesshoumaru almost tossed it away when the miko energy crawled up his hand. What stopped him was the fact the power did not hurt – in fact it soothed him. Kagome pulled her hand away and sash died down and the power receded.

"I purchased three sashes and two have magically properties. One went to Inuyasha and the other to Takeshi, however, I know you would not have appreciated an item that came with properties that were another youkai's." Kagome took a deep breath. "This sash is not offensive in any way. It's strictly defensive. I imbued it with my own power and all I know right now is that it has the ability to sooth aches and pains and guard against up close miko attacks. I'm sure it has plenty of other stuff that needs to be discovered. Think of it like Tenseiga… almost." Sesshoumaru continued to look down at her and then he cleared his throat.

"Thank you." Kagome did not expect more to come from the Western Lord and was surprised when he asked, "Will you assist in tying it?"

Kagome nodded quickly, a smile threatening to break out as she stood. Sesshoumaru stood in front of her and she grasped the sash gently from his clawed hands. Around his waist was his usual adornment of blue and gold and Kagome's fingers worked to remove it. As her fingers tugged the knot she was struck by how intimate the gesture was and her fingers stilled. Yes, she had ties Inuyasha's around his waist but there had been nothing to untie. Crimson flared over her cheeks for the umpteenth time that day and she risked a look at the taiyoukai through her lashes.

Sesshoumaru's lips curled and he reached out a finger to smooth of her delicate cheek, his voice teasing and tangy thick, "Something wrong, miko?"

Kagome shook her head and his finger fell from her cheek, as she tugged once more and blue and gold slid off his waist and into her awaiting hands. She grasped it and slung it over her shoulder, grabbing the pure gold one and looping it around his waist. The action brought her close to his chest, close enough to feel the unnatural heat of his skin against her own, the beat of his heart against his chest. She pulled away as she completely looped it around and began to tie it in the knot the previous one had been in. It was a breath she hadn't realized she was holding that she pulled away. She held out the previous sash and Sesshoumaru shook his head, his hand reaching out and grabbing it.

He shook it out to its full length and width and draped the item over her shoulders in a form of shawl. She was surprised at how warm it was and gave Sesshoumaru questioning hues of cerulean. "I no longer need this one and I am sure you will get more use of it."

Kagome nodded her thanks and buried her chilled face into the warmth of the shawl, accidentally inhaling and taking all that was Sesshoumaru's scent. The shawl matched her clothing well and she dropped it to her shoulders as she took her seat on the blanket again. Sesshoumaru gave her look but Kagome ignored it and patted his previous seat, "What are you reading?"

With what could have been described as a roll of his eyes, he sat beside her and pulled his book out once again, "I am reading the tale of General Tsumi of the East – his accounts of a battle that plagued the land 2,000 years ago."

"It sounds boring." Kagome admitted as she leaned her head against the tree.

"To you, yes. To myself it is interesting to read of how this other survived a battle that not many did and apply his tactics into modern warfare." He advised as Kagome gave a little yawn.

Kagome snorted, eyes begin to close, the warmth of the shawl, and her late evening catching up to her, "Still sounds boring." She muttered, adjusting the shawl around her shoulders.

Sesshoumaru hummed and continued his reading, not surprised that the miko had fallen asleep not a few minutes later. He was surprised when her head dropped onto his shoulder. He cast a look in her direction but made no move to remove her. Instead, he reached a clawed hand to cover her shoulders a little more and returned to his book.

.

The next few days passed quickly, with battle meetings here and tactical meetings there. Kagome's training was put on hold in order to train Inuyasha as much as they could before they went into the Obsidian compound. As the days drew closer, Kagome grew more frantic – her fear and her experience drowning out all logical reason. Surprisingly, Sesshoumaru was the one to soothe her mental pains – listening to the nightmares as he had several days prior – lending her his strength.

In these last few days, Mizuki grew relentless in her search of the truth behind the attacks on the miko until finally they were given information. When asked how it was retrieved, her smile was sharp and dark around the edges but she informed them, "Lust is a powerful and painful motivator."

"The boy mentioned a lower noble-woman of gold sending missives on where to meet in one of the border cities. They plan and they plot there – she has no scent and she has no name. He says her hair skin is like gold but she keeps her face concealed. He knows she is lower-noble because her expensive cloak and clothing. The missives are sent to his older brother's house in the city and passed word of mouth to those dedicated to the cause. Do you want me to handle it while you are away?"

Sesshoumaru's eyes moved to the miko at his side and he nodded his head, "Yes, and take the miko with you. It will be a learning experience."

Kagome spent as much time as she possibly could with Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, and Takeshi. She read with Sesshoumaru, cheered on Inuyasha as he sparred, and took her daily lunch with Takeshi. She had faith that they would be okay but she feared out how they would come back and the state they would be in.

Soon it was time. Too soon.

They would leave mid-afternoon and get to the forest around sunset, leaving them enough time to navigate through the foliage and to the compound where they would be there late at night carry out their mission.

Kagome stood outside Sesshoumaru's office and knocked once on the door.

She heard a muffled 'come in' and she entered, quickly closing the door behind her.

Sesshoumaru was moving from his desk, signing a scroll as he went and Kagome inhaled sharply. Sesshoumaru turned to her and she took several steps forward, her gaze dark and not fully focused. Her voice was steady but soft when she began, stopping when she stood in front of the taiyoukai, "Promise me you'll make sure everyone comes home alive."

Sesshoumaru looked down at the miko, reached out a hand to touch her shoulder and nodded, "You have my word."

Her voice finally trembled, "You too – you have to come back alive too."

Surprised, though he didn't show it, he nodded once more, "Myself as well."

"Y-you leave now, right?" she questioned, her fingers coming to desperately grasp the hand on his shoulder. At his quick nod, she exhaled deeply and pursed her lips, "I will walk with you."

Sesshoumaru offered his arm and Kagome took it. It was an odd feeling, walking down the hall and to the main courtyard. He had never had a woman see him off to battle as this miko was to do. Her scent was stifling with her fear – but he patted the hand in the crook of his arm and her lips quirked with a small smile.

"You have your duties and I have mine. In a few days time, if all goes well, you will receive a missive from myself. We will stay there for several days signing terms and agreements after we have seated one of the brothers in power." Kagome nodded and her shoulders visibly sagged with relief. "You are acting power until I return – if something occurs then my mother will be there to assist you. While I am away the only ones you can trust are those of the higher council and those who you deem friend."

"I will take care of our lands while you're away." Sesshoumaru stopped abruptly causing Kagome to stumble. Her brows furrowed, "Sesshoumaru-sama?"

Turning his golden hues to her, he nodded his head once, "Our lands?"

Nibbling her bottom lip gently, she cast her gaze downward, "Our lands."

He released her arm and very carefully placed his hand on her shoulder. She tried so hard. She truly did in order to learn and be accepted. She fought and bled for what was hers and for the first time since she had come to him he had no doubt that she was exactly what he needed in his Western Lady. And he was proud.

Curling a long finger into one of the curls that escapade her hair he nodded his head, "I am sure you will." Warmth blossomed into Kagome's belly and crimson curled his cheeks, making her eyes brighter, less dull then from when she had come into his office. "It is a temporary separation, Kagome – I gave my word that I would return your guard and friend. Have faith."

Kagome reached up and grasped his hand in hers, closing her eyes, "And you as well, remember?"

He nodded his head to her once and the moment was gone as placed her hand in the crook of his elbow and the two once more began their walk. It was a short trek and soon they were outside where several warriors of different races stood, Inuyasha and Takeshi amongst them.

Sango was there and quickly made her way to Kagome's side, bowing her head to Sesshoumaru as she passed. Kagome was passed from the taiyoukai to the slayer and she grasped Sango as though she were her lifeline. Sesshoumaru inclined his head to Kagome but before he could go, she grasped his sleeve. He stopped and with a deep breath and a shaky smile, she murmured, "Peace be with you should you fall."

Sesshoumaru inclined his head once more as she let the sleeve fall from her grasp. Inuyasha caught her scent as Sesshoumaru passed by him and took lead amongst the soldiers and he turned to his friend. His grin was cocky and conceited but Kagome saw the tension in his shoulders as h walked toward her. He gathered Kagome into his arms and he pressed his nose to the crown of her head, "I'll be back soon, wench."

"You come home, remember? No matter what." She whispered desperately, face buried in his chest. "You always fight to come back." Her voice dropped lower as he shook in his arms, "I'm not used to you doing battle without me so you fight always. I'm not going to be there to remind you so you'll just have to remember that you have a home here to come back to." Her voice fell quiet, "Peace be with you should you fall."

Inuyasha chuckled as he released her, "I know I do – take care of yourself. You have all these damn babysitters but I'm sure you'll find some way to get in trouble."

Kagome swatted his chest playfully and he leaped back with a laugh and toward his brother but Kagome was unable to mourn the loss because Takeshi was there to take his place. This was the goodbye she dreaded. Not because she cared for him more but because he had more to lose and she knew in the end he would be the one to deliver the killing blow.

He did not touch her.

He stood directly in front of her with a small frown on his face, "Kagome-sama."

Kagome inclined her head to him and she took his hand in hers, her throat closing, voice thick, "Don't take stupid risks." She informed him as nonchalantly as she could, "You do what you have to do and you come back." Their eyes met and her voice fell to a whisper, "Don't expect for your vengeance to feel good… it never does."

Takeshi nodded his head, "I know, Kagome-sama."

Their relationship was a confusing one.

He took care of her like Inuyasha had and he hand the capability to set her at ease like Sesshoumaru.

He was caught somewhere between the two and Kagome was often questioning exactly where he stood but at this moment it didn't matter.

Like she had with Inuyasha, she lunged forward and wrapped her arms around him and murmured quietly, "Peace be with you should you fall."

Just as softly, and a tad warmly he responded back, "I won't."

When Kagome let him go, his eyes were cold.

Colder than she had seen in a long time and she was reminded of Sesshoumaru.

They both had the ability to just turn off whatever they were with her and become battle-hardened warriors in an instant.

As he walked to Sesshoumaru and took his place at his side amongst the warriors Kagome looked at the two and saw for the first time what they were together.

Warlord and General.

Sesshoumaru wasn't her mentor and equal in that moment – Takeshi wasn't her friend and guard.

They were Western Lord and High General and neither were hers – they belonged to the warriors that fell into step beside them as they turned from her.

None of them – not even Inuyasha looked back.

Sango grasped Kagome's hand tightly as they disappeared from view and held it until Kagome was ready to leave.

"It will be okay, Kagome..." Sango murmured and Kagome nodded her head.

"I know - they have their duty and I have mine." Though she didn't notice the change, Sango did. Just like Sesshoumaru and Takeshi had become Lord and General - Kagome quickly went from miko to Lady of the West as she turned to her friend and sister, "I would most appreciative of yours and Miroku-sama's help." Miroku who had come to see off the party walked forth.

"What help is needed, Kagome-sama?"

Kagome turned to her long time companions and she pursed her lips, "We're hunting someone - someone dangerous and someone that wants me gone and feels as though Sesshoumaru-sama is unfit to rule."

Miroku and Sango shared a look and the monk took a step forward, "You can always count on our help, Kagome-sama."

And a little relief sagged through Kagome's shoulders and she smiled gently, "Great - thank you. Mizuki-sama has set aside a time for us to meet over this matter right before dinner. You'll attend?"

Sango took the miko's hand and tucked into the crook of her arm as she began to steer Kagome away, "Of course we will."

As Sango began to lead Kagome inside, Kagome case one more look at the horizon where the party had gone.

Taking a deep breath Kagome turned and looked back at the Citadel - this is my chance to prove to my people I am not just a miko. That I am worthy of being Western Lady.

As the door to the outside closed behind them, Kagome held her head high.

She could do it.

She would do it.

It was her job to take of the West in Sesshoumaru's stead and that is what she would do.

.

Inuyasha sniffed as he observed Sesshoumaru leading ahead of him.

Kagome's scent had been with them despite the fact they had left Nishi no Kokoro behind awhile ago.

He glared at Sesshoumaru's back ans Takeshi passed him by and Kagome's scent grew stronger. His eyes darted to Takeshi and back to Sesshoumaru and they narrowed as they zeroed in on the new sash at Sesshoumaru's. Inuyasha cast a look at his waist where he saw the one Kagome gave him at his. He turned to Takeshi and also saw a new addition at Takeshi's waist.

Inuyasha stopped abruptly, "Hold up!" Sesshoumaru paused and turned to his brother, effectively stalling the entire group.

"Yes?" Sesshoumaru drawled slowly.

Inuyasha pointed a clawed digit at Sesshoumaru and then Takeshi's waist. "The fuck you wearing?"

Takeshi grinned at the hanyou and turned his hips a few times, "A gift."

"From who?" Inuyasha growled.

"Kagome-sama."

Sesshoumaru looked down at Takeshi's waist and observed the sash with a curious light.

Takeshi pointed looked at Inuyasha's waist, "And yours?"

"Ain't none of your business!" Inuyasha grouched as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Takeshi took a several steps forward and sniffed, "It smells of my mistress."

Inuyasha batted Takeshi away quickly, "Hey! Back off!"

Takeshi's eyes were alight with mischief when he touched his sash, "Mine was made from the spiders of the highest mountains - what's yours made of!"

Inuyasha's golden hues gleamed as he snorted, "Mine is way better - "

Sesshoumaru turned away from the bickering youkai and began walking once more, ignoring the two children behind him. While no one was looking, his hand reverently leaned down to touch the bright color of the present the miko provided to him.

It was clear his was best.

There was no need for him to bicker with them.

Referencing the non-canon theory that Sesshoumaru had turned away Inuyasha as a boy and rather than kill him he let him go in order for him to be preyed upon by other youkai.

(2) I was once told by my guard that if I was survive here then I would have to be cruel.

Referencing the chapter where Takeshi told Kagome before meeting the Harem women; he told her that if they are cruel then she must show them cruelness back.
