I love Zack Fair! Kudos to Winfred-san for catching this bunny for me!

Zack Fair shot a glance at his blonde companion. Cloud sat slumped against a rock, the slight rising and falling of his shoulders the only indication he hasn't joined the life stream.

The raven-haired SOLDIER squinted against the horizon of the vast land they were currently situated at. He could faintly make out hordes of ShinRa troops heading his way – no, wait, 'hordes' is an understatement. Zack wouldn't be surprised if the whole army was sent to take him down.

No matter, there was no way he would give up. Zack Fair does not leave his business unfinished, or let his beloved wait. Nothing can prevent him from going to the church in the slums.

Letting out an exasperated sigh, he said, "They never seem to run out of zest to hunt us down, eh?"

He turned to Cloud, "Hang in there, my friend. This will only take a minute, I promise." He took a step towards the direction of his hunters, but hesitated. His brow furrowed, contemplating something inside. Finally, he came to a decision.

Zack took out his cell phone and punched in the ever so familiar numbers. He put the phone to his ear and gauged the distance between him and the troops while waiting for her to pick up. He had approximately five minutes before they arrive.

"Hello, there. Aerith here. Please leave a message so I can call you back." Zack cursed inwardly. It would be so much easier to just talk to her – he needed to hear her voice, but he'll have to do with a message.

"Aerith, it's Zack. Listen, I…I don't know how long it'll take for me to reach Midgar but I'm on my way, don't worry. I just have a few…dogs chasing me. I just want to let you know that I'm alright. It's been a rough mission, but I'm in one piece."

He took a deep breath, "I hope you and the flowers are doing fine. I can't wait to see what a good job you did with the slums. Be sure to surprise me, okay? I'll be there as soon as possible. I've got a friend with me, too, and together we'll live a happy, carefree life in Midgar, eh?"

Zack scuffed the ground with he toe of his boot. "Aerith…take care of yourself, you hear me? I…I love you. I'll be there, don't worry." He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. "I'll see you then."

He stashed his phone away. "Listen up, Cloud," he said without turning. "We're going to live in peace with Aerith once we get to Midgar, so make sure you're all geared up to sell flowers." He let out a chuckle, and started walking towards his death – only; he didn't know it at that time.

"Hey, boys," he said under his breath, as they approached, "I've got someone waiting or me so let's make this quick, eh?"

In the church...

Aerith Gainsborough felt a tingle run down her spine. She stood up and turned to gaze at the sky, worry coursing through her. Nearby, the screen on her phone lit up.

"Voice mail received."

A/N: shorter than I liked, and not exactly what I had in my head, but I'll wait for the verdict from readers. So, review? Please and thank you!
