You're my Brother
Death. Destruction. All of it surrounded seven year old Ray, and he looked to see the cause of it. That dark figure… that thing in the shadows… the one with the glowing red eyes… that must be it… it must be responsible… but who is it?
The thing stepped toward him, closer and into the light.
It can't be.
It… he leapt at Ray with frightening agility, displaying frightening white fangs, and Ray discovered he had a gun. And it went off, and he fell to the ground.
Ray woke up with a start, sweat pouring down his face. Wait, he was in his bed? That… that was all just a dream?
He silently entered his brother's room. He placed his hand on his chest, and felt his heartbeat.
He wanted to see if he had any fangs, but he decided he was pressing his luck as it was and decided to leave.
Ray looked at Robert, who was starting to wake up and grinned sheepishly.
"Ray, what the heck are you doing in here? Its 3:00 in the morning, man."
Ray winced at the sleepy accusation in his brother's voice. He didn't see any fangs, but he knew from past experience that Robert was not above getting revenge on his little brother if he woke him up to early. Especially on a Saturday.
Still, he just needed to be with him right now. Needed to have reassurance that it wasn't real.
Robert sighed. "Ray, did you have another nightmare?"
How did he know that?
"I know, because I've heard you tossing around in your sleep. And, you sleeptalk."
I said that out loud?
"Yeah, you did, bro. Now, you want to tell me what it was about?"
Robert groaned, and yawned. "Look bro, if you come in here at 3:00 am and wake me up, I am perfectly within my rights to murder you, and you know that. Now, tell me what happened before I decide to cash in on my rights."
He's certainly a good motivator.
"You were, like a monster or something. And you attacked me, said you hated me."
Robert sat up and patted the spot next to him on the bed, and Ray sat. Robert put an arm around his shoulder.
"Ray, you know I don't hate you."
Robert resisted the urge to strangle him and continued. "Of course. You're as annoying as anything, but that's you're job. As a little brother, you have to constantly annoy me, and I have to constantly torture you for doing so. Its how it is with brothers."
Ray grinned. He loved listening to his brother talk. His deep voice always sounded so safe to Ray. So protective.
"So, you're not gonna torture me for waking you up?"
Robert considered that for a moment. "I suppose I can let you off… just this once."
Ray hugged him. "Thanks. This doesn't make me your slave or anything, does it?"
"Consider this a once-in-a-lifetime-lord-knows-why-I'm-so good-to-you-get-out-of-jail free-card."
"No problem, Ray."
"Can I sleep in here tonight?"
Robert grinned in the dark. "Sure, just get in before I gain my senses."
Ray climbed in and snuggled up next to Robert.
"I'm glad you're not dead. Goodnight bro."
