He gazed down upon the little planet with an expression any parent would recognize. His biological family out of reach and out of time, he'd turned to these humans, silly little monkeys. He'd shaped their history. He guided them, guarded them from dangers they were too young to understand - chastising when necessary, always subtly, gently, lest they rebel.

Even those few who knew him best never guessed his true feelings.

One day, he knew, he would have to let go, but his hearts swelled with pride at the thought of what they'd become.
