Alice is nuts, okay? I love her for it. Hope you like...
"What are we doing tonight?" I asked.
Edward sat cross-legged on my bed as I hung up my clothes.
"I don't have any idea," he said.
His phone rang. "Hello?"
Someone spoke to him quickly.
"Sure," he said.
Another space for the caller.
"Alice, I don't think she wants you to play dress up with her again."
He sighed dramatically. "Very well."
He pressed a button on the phone and I heard Alice begging me. "Please, please, please, please, please, Bella, let me pick your outfit for tonight?"
"Why? What's going on?" I asked. I walked out of the closet and Edward handed me the phone, no longer on speaker.
"It's a surprise. Not even Edward can tell you what it is," she said.
"Well, that depends on whether I get to say what I will and won't wear," I told her.
"Fine, fine, just let me."
"Uh, did you tell Edward what time to come?"
"Eight," she said. "It's a Saturday, so Charlie will let you stay a little late."
"Okay," I said. She had already hung up the phone.
I flipped the phone shut and handed it to Edward.
"What is she doing?" I asked.
"I don't know," he said. "She kept singing 1985 over and over and over again…I tried to stay as far away from her as possible today. It was getting old."
"Well, I guess I should find something to do for forty minutes," I muttered.
He raised his eyebrows. "We don't actually have to stay here."
"Where do we go, then?" I asked.
"My house," he said. "I'm sure that there isn't anything too sinister going on."
"Okay," I said.
I hurried down the stairs and Edward went out the window to get his car. When he drove up to the front Charlie looked out of the living room curiously. "Going out?"
"Yeah. Alice is doing something that I don't think I'm allowed to miss," I said.
Charlie grinned. "Have fun, Bells."
"I will," I said.
I came out of the house and climbed into the Volvo.
Edward looked over at me. "I still can't get anything out of her. Evidently we are the only ones not informed about this."
"Well, at least I don't have to let Alice dress me up," he said with a wicked grin. "I can't say I'm sorry about that."
I grinned back equally wicked. "I'll work something out."
He drove on as if he hadn't heard me and we reached the house in only a few minutes.
Alice was waiting on the steps for us. "Hi," she said. "Come on, Bella."
Before I could argue I was dragged up the stairs to her room and undressed, the door locked for good measure.
She took out a pair of designer jeans and a silky blue top that was very low-cut and tied up at my waist. I put them on without arguing for once. She put some eyeliner, eye shadow and a natural shade of lipstick, then pulled out a straightener and did my hair up in a ponytail.
She stopped and looked me over. "You didn't do the top right." She tugged the strings free and fixed it so that there was a billowy look to the fabric that was over the lower half of my torso. "That's better." She smiled at me pleasantly. "So you have some plans for Edward?"
"You seem to know them," I said. "Would you like to help me?"
"I'll do it for you, Bella," she said. She walked to her closet. "I knew this was coming so I picked out some extra things a while back." She pulled out a leather jacket, some torn jeans, a white shirt, hair gel, boots, and a pair of sunglasses. "He'll like it, I'm sure. It's getting told what to wear that irks him."
"Thank you, Alice," I said and gave her a hug. "But won't he know now?"
"Not that I can see," she said. "Let's go get him."
"Don't we need a plan?" I asked.
"Don't worry about a plan, I have this figured out." She giggled.
She took my hand and led me out of the door and down the stairs to the living room. Edward was standing against the wall watching me descend the stairs. I stumbled and he caught me. Alice took his arm. That must have been her plan.
"What's going on?" he asked me in alarm.
"Payback," I told him.
He frowned at Alice and then looked at me. "You were serious."
"Just do it. I did," I told him. I kissed his jaw and walked away. They were gone before I was out of the room. Emmett and Rosalie were in the living room along with Jasper. "Where are Carlisle and Esme?" I asked.
"They went hunting," Jasper said. "They're going to stay out until about midnight. I hope you enjoy our little party."
"Alice is going to fill you in soon," he assured me.
"Okay," I said. "You can't tell me how Edward's doing, can you?"
He looked up. "He isn't doing too well. He seems to be arguing with Alice about something." Jasper grinned. "He's also loosing."
Rosalie raised a graceful eyebrow. "What could she be doing to him?"
"I asked her to dress him up for the night too," I said.
"Really?" she asked. She seemed surprised that I would do that to him. A smirk played on her lips as she considered the possibilities.
"She isn't putting him in a dress, is she?" Emmett asked hopefully. "Is it red? No, pink, definitely pink. With bows."
"I don't think so," I said. "She had boy's clothes for him."
"I think I'll get a camera anyway," he said and ran off for a second and was back within that same second. He turned it on grinning like a kid on Christmas. "This should be good."
A few seconds later Alice walked into the room. Then Edward. Emmett snapped a picture of him and he growled. He had the classic Grease look down. His hair was slicked back and he had the collar of his jacket turned up and the jeans had several tears in them. The shirt was spotless and tight. He pulled the sunglasses to the tip of his nose and looked at me.
"Happy?" he asked.
"Very," I said.
He pushed the glasses back up and walked over to me, hands in his pockets. Clearly he had The Walk down too.
Alice bounced up and down excitedly. "Are you guys ready for the party?"
"Heck yes," Emmett said. Jasper whooped and Rosalie nodded.
"Then let's get started," Alice said. "Jasper?"
He walked to where the couch usually was and got up on a rise before crossing to the corner of the room. He dragged one of those DJ board things and flipped some switches.
Edward stiffened beside me. "Not that, Alice," he moaned.
"Too late, we're going to do this and we are all going to participate," she told him. "Enjoy our karaoke night Bella. Edward." She smiled sweetly.
"I should have known," Edward said. "She's always been doing this at least once or twice a month."
Jasper picked up a set of headphones and hung them around his neck. "Rosalie, you're up," he called.
Rosalie stepped onto the big dais that had been placed in the room. She took a microphone and its stand out of a corner and set it down in front of her.
She smiled and Jasper started the music. Edward took my hand and led me to the couch muttering "I can't believe this" on the way over. He sat and I dropped down beside him, then Emmett sat. Alice stood to my side and Jasper picked up a remote from the controls. Most of the lights went out and a projector shone words high over our heads. Then the music started.
"Who can make you mad when you having a blast? I can, I can. And who can pick you up when you're feeling like you suck? I can, I can. And who knows what you think without you sayin' anything? I do, I do. Who had you figured out and never had a doubt? I did, I did." Rosalie's voice was clear and perfect as she sang. The music was great.
Rosalie put the mike back and we all clapped for her. She smirked at me and took a seat on Emmett's other side.
"Who want's to go next?" Alice asked. "We all have to go eventually."
"I'll go," Emmett said.
He marched up to the stage and took the microphone. "This one's for you, Eddie."
Jasper grinned. "1 or 2, Emmett?"
"One," Emmett answered. The music started. "You know I used to be a bad girl. I got busy in the bathroom at my high school prom. Yeah, I used to be a dancer at the local strip club…" He sang on. "…But now I am a Volvo driving soccer mom."
Edward scowled at him and he kept on.
When he finished everyone but Edward was laughing. I tried not to.
Alice took the mike from him. "My turn." She sang -causing Edward great anguish the entire time. It was seventies music- Does Your Mother Know happily and danced over to where Jasper was.
Then Jasper took his turn. "This one is because I think we all know just how true it is in our case." He grinned and Alice started the music with a flourish. "Four years you think for sure. That's all you've got to endure…" When he got to the refrain I laughed. "…The whole damn world is just as obsessed with who's the best dressed and who's having sex, who's got the money, who gets the honeys, who's kinda cute and who's just a mess and you still don't have the right look, and you don't have the right friends. Nothing changes but the faces, the names, and the trends. High school never ends. "
"Bella, come up here," he said when he was done. "Alice, Rosalie." He smiled at us. I stood and walked up with them. "Just read the words. Well, sing them too."
Alice took my arm. "I saw it. You can sing."
I flushed. "Not in front of people."
She snorted. "Come on, have a little fun."
"If that's what you want to call it," I muttered.
"Rosalie, you want to start?" Alice asked her. We stood around the microphone, me on one side, Rosalie on the other, Alice in the middle.
"Of course," Rosalie said as Island in the Sun began to play.
I didn't sing that time.
"Bella, if you don't sing I'm going to force you to," Alice said when it finished. "Besides, you get used to it as you go along. It's fun. Edward won't admit it, but he likes it too."
Oh, great. I had forgotten Edward was watching me.
Rosalie looked at me. "It really isn't so bad. You go first this time." She seemed to have let it go for tonight that she hated my guts and was being a little supportive.
I nodded, taking a breath. The music started and Alice helped me out on the first lines. "Life is good, I can't complain, I mean I could but no one's listening. Your image overwhelms my brain and it feels good. Good, good. Now I'm rolling my window down. I love the wind, but I hate the sound. You're like a tattoo that I can't remove and it feels good. It feels good, it feels good." Then I got into it. Alice and I were moving with the music by the end. Techno does that to a girl.
Rosalie turned to me when we finished. "Not bad, Bella."
"Thank you, Rosalie. You were great," I said.
Alice looked at Edward. "I think it's the boys' turn."
Emmett jumped up and Jasper came up to the mike. Edward crossed his arms stubbornly and watched as I approached him.
I looked into Edward's eyes pleadingly. "Please?"
He opened his mouth to say something and stopped, just looking at me. Finally he said, "Alright."
I smiled as he stood. He sauntered up to the stage and moaned when he heard the other boys' thoughts.
"Lion Sleeps Tonight, Alice," Jasper said. "Majority vote, Edward. Sorry."
Edward looked over at me and nodded at him when he looked back at his brothers.
Alice started the music. He started the song, taking the highest part, Jasper took the second and Emmett took the lowest. He sounded like heaven. And the song was better than the original version. "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight. In the jungle, the quiet jungle, the lion sleeps tonight." Jasper and Emmett grinned at each other and started to dance as they sang. Edward rolled his eyes at them. They threw their arms over his shoulders. He laughed at them that time and sang on. "Near the village, the peaceful village, the lion sleeps tonight. Near the village, the quiet village, the lion sleeps tonight." Edward smiled at me as he kept on. "Hush my darling; don't fear my darling, the lion sleeps tonight. Hush my darling; don't fear my darling, the lion sleeps tonight."
Jasper and Emmett pushed Edward off of the stage. He walked over to me and I grinned.
"That was great," I told him.
"Thank you," he said. He placed his arms around me right as Jasper ran over and switched the song.
He and Emmett belted it out. "Sometimes it's hard to be a woman, giving all your love to just one man…" I stared at them as they sang the song. It was the Blues Brothers version. "…Stand by your man. Give him two arms to cling to. And something warm to come to when nights are cold and lonely. Stand by your man. And tell the world you love him. Keep giving all the love you can. Stand by your… man."
Edward looked back at them rolling his eyes. "Shut UP, will you?"
I laughed and he looked down at me. "You know, they're only having fun."
"Hmm." He looked into my eyes as if he was contemplating something.
Alice was watching us from the corner and had a smile on her face. Edward released me started for the stage and she stepped in front of him. "I know what song you want on," she said.
He looked back at me before standing before the microphone. "Bella, this one is for you." He pulled off his sunglasses and placed them on the collar of his shirt. The music started and he took hold of the microphone. "I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind. I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time. I watched the world flow to the dark side of the moon. I feel there's nothing I can do." His topaz eyes locked onto my brown ones. "I watched the world flow to the dark side of the moon. After all I knew it had to be something to do with you. I really don't mind what happens now and then as long as you'll be my friend at the end. If I go crazy, then will you still call me superman? If I'm alive and well will you be there holding my hand? I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might. Kryptonite…"
He finished the song and Jasper was looking from me to him with interest. Jasper grinned as if he saw what I was going to do. Alice was blinking at me confusedly. Of course she was confused. I couldn't decide what I wanted. Jasper, on the other hand, could feel what I felt.
I ran into Edwards arms and kissed him. I don't think he realized what was going on for a second, then his arms twined around my waist. When I pulled back from the brief kiss, he grinned. "I'm glad you liked it."
We walked off of the stage and Emmett got up there again. "This one is also for you, Eddie."
Edward's eyes snapped to him. "DON'T call me Eddie. My name is Edward." Edward glared at him, then his eyes widened. "Don't even-"
The music cut him off and Emmett grinned. He sang through the first verse and Edward wrinkled his nose in disgust. "That squirrel had to die. Goodbye, squirrel." I think it was the parody to Earl Had to Die.
When the song finished I was very thankful. It was terrible. But I couldn't help but laugh.
Jasper and Emmett came down to us and grinned at Edward. He stared at them with raised eyebrows as they led me to the stage again. "Ready to sing again, Bella?" Emmett asked.
I sighed. "Why not."
Jasper nodded to Alice. "You start, Bella."
"Fine," I muttered. "I saw him dancing there by the record machine. I knew he must have been about seventeen. The beat was going strong. Playin' my favorite song. And I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah, me. And I could tell it wouldn't be long till he was with me, yeah. me, singin' I love rock 'n' roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby. I love rock and roll, so come on take the time and dance with me."
The boy's sang backup. I had to sing over the guitar, though. Jasper made me fearless. I enjoyed the high.
"Thanks, Jasper," I said.
He raised his eyebrows. "That wasn't me."
"Really?" I asked, a blush spilling across my cheeks.
"Really. Now, if Edward would come up here again…" he muttered.
"I don't think that's going to happen," I said disappointedly.
Edward was behind me within a second. "Why would you say that, love? I'm only just getting started."
Alice mouthed "I told you so" to me and I smiled.
Emmett walked up to the mike and Alice started the music as I walked back down to the couch. "Is it okay if I speak to you today? You've been pissed off for a week now, but nothing I could say could make you look up, or crack up. Is there anything that I can do, anything to tell you you're a bitch, but I love you anyway. You can't sing, but you still put me to sleep. Baby, you're a bitch. You make me sick, but don't ever go away."
Edward stepped up as soon as he was done with his song. The new one, well, not new, but…when the song started, he took the highest part again. "Barbara Ann, take my hand. Barbara Ann, you've got me rockin and a rollin, rockin and a realin, Barbara Ann. Ba-Ba-Ba-Barbara Ann." He sang tenor well, but I liked it when he switched to the lower parts.
I went over to Alice as they sang.
"Alice, can I sing something?" I asked nervously.
She looked up at me. "If you like. Do you need me and Rosalie to help out?"
"Not this time," I said. "Just say okay before I change my mind again."
"Okay," she said. "What song?"
"Contagious," I said.
"Averil Lavigne?" she asked.
"Yes," I said. The boy's finished and she picked up a CD.
"You better go up there before Emmett dominates again," she warned me with a smile.
"I'm going this time?" I asked.
Edward came up to us swiftly. "What's wrong, Bella? Jasper thinks you're getting a little stressed."
"I'm fine," I said.
"Go sit down, Edward," Alice said distractedly.
"Er, okay," he said. He walked away and sat down.
I walked up to the mike and took it off of the stand. I looked over at Alice and she grinned. The music started and I meet Edward's eyes. "When you're around I don't know what to do. I do not think that I could wait. To go over and to talk to you. I do not know what I should say. And I walk out in silence. That's when I start to realize what you bring to my life. Damn this guy can make me cry. It's so contagious. I can not get it out of my mind. It's so outrageous. You make me feel so high all the time." I couldn't help but dance a little to the music as I sang.
