A/N: This is for Footloose the musical. I did this play in school last year. This is dedicated to my friend Nicole, who played Rusty, for her birthday.
Disclaimer: If I owned Footloose, I would have given Ariel another solo.
"Willard, come on," Rusty laughed as she pulled her boyfriend by his wrist towards a vacant lot. "We're going to miss it!" It was 5:30 P.M. and Rusty wanted to show something to Willard. They walked for quite a while until they reached a secluded spot in the tall grass that was away from all the hustle and bustle of the highway. Rusty lied down in the grass and Willard lied next to her.
"Rusty, what are we doing here?" asked Willard.
"Wait a minute, and you'll see why," said Rusty. After a few minutes of silence Willard started to get bored.
"What are waiting for?"
"Patience is a virtue, Willard. Look at the sky" When he did, he was amazed. "Wow," he breathed.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Rusty said dreamily as they watched the sunset.
"The sky is all blue and pink. It looks like cotton candy"
"Yeah, and the part that's closest to the sun is red and orange," Willard whispered in awe. The two of them stayed silent for a while, watching the sun go down before Willard spoke again.
"Hey, Rusty," he said.
"Yeah?" she answered serenely.
"How did you find this place?" For the first time that night, Rusty looked sad.
"Well, I found it when I was twelve, right after The Accident. When I heard about Ariel's brother, Bobby, I needed to be alone to think. Ariel and I have been best friends forever, so I was really close with Bobby too. It's a good place to cry without being bothered. I stayed there the whole day thinking and crying and trying to make sense of it all.
"A few days later, after the funeral, I took Ariel here. We cried together, and tried to remember all the good times we had with Bobby. Then, we saw the sunset, and it was like Bobby was smiling down at us, telling us that everything was going to be alright. Both of us still come here every now and then when we need to be alone, but mostly Ariel goes to the bridge"
"Wow," Willard said softly. "You two are the only ones who know about it?"
"Well, now you do, and I'm pretty sure Ariel has told Ren. But I don't think anyone else knows" They were both silent for a while, holding hands and watching the day disappear into night with crickets chirping in the background.
"I love you"
"I love you too"
I hope you enjoyed this. This just popped into my head while I was watching the sunset the day before my friend's birthday. Rusty and Willard are just so darn cute together! Please R&R!
