Sesshomaru stood in his spacious tent with his four attendants vigorously working at adorning him in his jousting armor.

"You shall be facing Lord Koga." His father announced from the heavily cushioned chair he sat in across from Sesshomaru.

Sesshomaru simply nodded, the board expression never leaving his face. He detested the pageantry this sport had taken on recently. He wanted to do nothing more then mount his steed and pummel the tar out of which ever noblemen he happened to face.

"I will ride that new horse today." He stated.

His father 'tisked'. That should have been a question, but such was never the way with Sesshomaru.

"Will you?" His father said with a fanged smirk.

"Yes." Sesshomaru answered coolly. "Just to see if he is in fact as great as Lord Kaname told you he was."

"I do not doubt his word." InuTaisho said forcefully.

"Hn." Sesshomaru replied. "We shall see."

InuTaisho pushed himself from the chair he occupied and walked towards the opening of the tent. Sesshomaru's attendants stopped their task long enough to bow as he left. A few moment's later they were finally done and two of the attendants pulled over a full length mirror and set it up in front of Sesshomaru. He admired the way the black steel contrasted with his long silvery hair. It was finer then anything any of the other competitors would be wearing.

'As it should be.' He thought with a grin.

"Is everything to your liking Prince Sesshomaru?" One of the older attendants asked making sure that he bowed as he spoke.

"Yes. You may leave." He answered turning from the man.

"Yes milord." The man said as he and the others scurried out of the tent.

Sesshomaru took a deep breath as he flopped down, or flopped as best he could in the heavy armor, into the chair that his father had been in moments before. He looked around the tent at the lavish decorating and thought how absurd it was to have gone through all of the trouble of setting it up just to be taken down a day later.

'I suppose it gives the servants something better to do then gossip.' He thought as he slowly rose to his feet. 'Perhaps I shall check to see if they've managed to saddle the correct horse.'

He left the tent and began walking in the direction of the stables when he practically was slammed into by a blur of pink and cream fabric.

"Oh forgive me kind sir." The woman said as she dusted off her long skirts.

"It is fine." He said captivated by her simple movements.

Then she looked up at him with a smile, which quickly faded to a look of shock, then horror when she realized just who she had bumped into.

"I sincerely apologize milord!" She cried instantly bowing her head down, her long dark locks falling over her shoulders.

"As I said before, it is fine. Pray tell, what is your name?" He asked.

The lovely creature before him clutched her skirts and curtsied politely.

"Kagome Higurashi milord."

He reached out and gently grasped her upper arm.

"There is no need to stand of such formalities Lady Kagome."

She bowed her head and blushed lightly.

"Would you allow me to wear your favors for today's events?" He asked with a warm smile.

She blushed even more and suddenly found the ground very interesting.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Wouldn't there be someone else's favors that would be more fitting for you to wear milord?"

"You do not find yourself worthy of my affections?" He asked amused.

"No milord...I...am a mere mortal." She explained still staring at the ground. "Surely there is demoness that would be more fitting-"

He gently cupped her chin forcing her to look at him.

"I believe that is my decision to make. Would you please let me have the honor of wearing your favors today?"

He pulled the sleeve up above his wrist on his right arm and held it out to her. Silently demanding that she comply. She hesitantly pulled a thin piece of white lace that had a bright green ribbon running through it's center from her sleeve and gently tied it around his wrist.

"I thank you Lady Kagome." He said continuing to smile. "I know it shall bring me luck." He took her hand in his and pressed his lips to the back of it. "Shall I hear your sweet voice cheering my name?"

Kagome curtsied again.

"If you wish it milord."

"Let us forget all of these formalities. Please, call me Sesshomaru."

"As you wish milor...Sesshomaru."

He nodded in satisfaction and took a step back from her.

"I must go, shall I see you again later?"

"If it pleases you." She answered blushing once more.

"That it shall." He said softly before he continued towards the stables.

Kagome watched him leave and suddenly realized that her heart was beating much to quickly for it to be normal. She took several deep breaths, well as deep as her tightly laced corset would allow, and began walking towards the stands where she was to meet her cousin to watch the jousting.

"You will never guess who's wrist I just tied my favors onto." Kagome said excitedly as she sat down next to her cousin Sango.

"Who? Is it a nobleman? Of course it's a nobleman. Which one? Lord Miroku perhaps? You know I like him. Why would you do such a thing?" Sango rambled on with a frown.

"No. I wouldn't. How could you think that?" Kagome asked hurt that her cousin would think so little of her. "It is not just any nobleman, it is the King's son." Kagome said unable to stop herself from bouncing in her seat with excitement.

"Prince Sesshomaru?!" Sango shrieked.

"Shhh!" Kagome said looking around at all the other Lords and Ladies that were glancing over at them. "Yes. I almost ran him down on my way here and he asked if he could wear my favors."

"Kagome! Do you know what this means?!" Sango cried.

"Shhh!" Kagome hissed pressing her hand to Sango's lips.

"Sorry." Sango mumbled from behind Kagome's hand before she removed it. "Do you know what this means?" She almost whispered.

Kagome smiled and nodded twice before she shook her head 'no'. Sango sighed before she took Kagome's hands in hers.

"It means that our Prince will likely court you."

"It does not." Kagome hissed as she pulled her hands from Sango's. "It simply means that he needed someone's favors."

"Oh quit being such a stick in the mud." Sango scolded her. "He would not have asked if he did not like you."

"He does not know me."

"I suppose you're just going to have to let him get to know you." Sango said as if the suggestion solved everything.

"Sango!" Kagome hissed in a hushed tone as she once again looked around to make sure no one was listening to their conversation. "You mustn't say such things."

"You're impossible." Sango said with a roll of her eyes. "What else did he say?"

"Um...he asked if I would cheer for him."

"What a silly question. Of course you would. What else?"

"If he could...see me...later."

"Why didn't you say that sooner?!" Sango asked.

Kagome shrugged and their conversation was cut off by the sound of trumpets signaling the start of the jousting. A few minor lords went first, the victor of each pairing advancing to the next round. Lord Miroku, which both Sango and Kagome cheered for, won his round against Lord Hitachiin. Then it was Lord Koga against Prince Sesshomaru. Kagome cheered loudly as he trotted his horse out onto the grounds. Sesshomaru scanned the crowd for Kagome and for an instant their eyes locked before he smiled and pulled the face mask of his helmet down. He held out his hand and one of his attendants handed him his lance. A man was standing half way between he and Koga, holding a white flag that would signal the start. He looked to Koga then Sesshomaru and dropped the flag before running to safety.

Sesshomaru kicked his horse forward and Koga did the same. The two charged towards each other at an incredible speed and clashed together with Sesshomaru's lance splintering against Koga's armor. Koga's lance hit Sesshomaru higher up almost at his neck, causing him to fall back on his horse, pulling the reins as his did so and the horse fell to the ground on it's side landing on Sesshomaru's leg. Sesshomaru yelled out in pain and as the horse scrambled to get up it managed to further crush him.

Kagome as well as any other soul in the stands rose to their feet with a gasp of horror. Sesshomaru's attendants ran to his side and found him unconscious. Koga jumped from his horse at the other end and ran as best he could to his side as well. He fell to his knees.

"What have I done?!" He yelled in shock.

One of the attendants put his ear to Sesshomaru's lips.

"He breathes!" He announced. "Let us carry him back to his tent and fetch the healer."

Everyone rallied around and helped to pick Sesshomaru up from the ground. They quickly carried him to his tent and laid him out on his bed. They carefully removed his armor and left him in his underclothes as they waited for the healer to arrive. The tense moments passed slowly and Sesshomaru continued to lay motionless.

Kagome and Sango rushed towards the Prince's tent as quickly as they could. They melted into the crowd that had gathered, nervously waiting for any news.

'Oh let him be alright.' Kagome silently prayed as they pushed their way through the other people to get as close to the tent as possible.

They waited for a long time as various noblemen pushed their way through the mass of people and entered the tent.

"Do you think he as awoken yet?" Kagome asked obviously worried.

"I'm sure they would have told us if he did." Sango replied as she gripped Kagome's hand tightly.

They waited for what seemed like hours as the crowd thinned out a little during that time. People were beginning to give up on the heir to the thrown. Finally, the curtains of the tent opened and the king himself stepped forward. Everyone that remained in the crowd instantly bowed with respect.

"Rise my good people for I have news of the prince's heath." Kagome's head shot up immediately. "He has finally awoke and does not seem to be injured to a severe extent. Thank the Lord that it was he, for the fall would likely have killed a lesser youkai."

Everyone in the crowd took a collective sigh of relief.

"Now I must ask..." He paused and a hint of amusement flashed across his features momentarily. "Is there a Lady Kagome present amongst you?"

Kagome and Sango looked to each other, sharing shocked expressions. Whispers and murmurings started throughout the crowd.

"I am Lady Kagome." Kagome said as she stepped forward.

InuTaisho smiled warmly and held his hand out to her.

"Then please come with me lovely young maiden."

Kagome took his hand hesitantly and followed him through the heavy fabric curtain of the tent. Once inside InuTaisho stopped, startling Kagome.

"I can see why he was asking for you." He commented as he looked her over with an approving eye.

"He...he asked for me sire?"

"Oh yes." InuTaisho said with a soft chuckle. "It was the second phrase from his lips once he awoke."

Kagome allowed herself to smile but mentally chided herself for the blush she knew was adorning her cheeks.

"I assume that they are your favors that he wears on his wrist?" He asked.

"Y...yes sire."

He nodded and then began walking once more towards the back of the tent. There was a massive bed that had several Lords standing around it.

"Gentlemen, this is the Lady Kagome." InuTaisho introduced her.

They turned to look at her and Kagome curtsied politely.

"Would you all leave us." Sesshomaru said. It was a command, not a question.

"We are simply worried about your heath milord." Lord Hitachiin said.

"I am fine. Now leave." Sesshomaru said as he sat up, his tone leaving no room for argument.

The lords began to leave his bedside.

"Before I leave..." Koga said obviously nervous. "May I please ask for you forgiveness milord?"

"You may not." Sesshomaru said glaring at him.

"What he means to say Lord Koga, is that he will allow you to come back at a later time." InuTaisho said attempting to smooth things over.

"That is not what-" Sesshomaru started.

"That is exactly what you meant." InuTaisho said sternly.

"Very well." Sesshomaru bit out.

InuTaisho smiled at Koga.

"Will this be satisfactory?" He asked.

"Of course sire." Koga answered with a bow.

"Then we shall leave them be. Lady Kagome..." He turned to Kagome with another warm smile. "Good luck my dear."

"Thank...you milord?" She asked hesitantly, unsure of how to respond to such a comment.

InuTaisho nodded and took Koga by the arm, leading him to the entrance of the tent.

"Finally." Sesshomaru breathed once they were gone. "Would you like to sit?" He asked patting the bed next to him.

Kagome shook her head.

"Are you frightened?" He asked amused.

"Of course not!" She answered, her tone more drastic sounding then she had intended.

Her eyes went wide as she wondered just how he may punish her for her rude behavior. He laughed lightly which only angered her more.

"Sit." He said again and with a huff, she did so. Sitting down on the edge of his bed facing him.

"I wanted to ask you what color you would be wearing to this evening's ball?"

"What?" She asked confused to why he would want to know such a thing. "I was not planing on attending it."

"Do not be ridiculous. Of course you are going. The reason that I ask what color you will be wearing is so that I can wear something that will complement it." He responded with a smile when he noticed the shocked look upon her face.

"Oh...alright." She stammered trying to think of what dress she could possibly wear.

"Does that mean that you are agreeing to go?"

"If it pleases you milord." She answered automatically.

"I believe that I told you to call me by my name."

"I am sorry." She apologized with a slight nod of her head.

"Now, would you be so kind as to let me know what you will be wearing."

"Possibly lavender?" She asked more then stated, unsure if he would approve.

"I don't believe that I own anything in that color." He murmured as he thought. "Would you settle for pale blue?"

Kagome almost burst out in a fit of giggles. Here was the prince of all the land asking her if it was alright if he wore pale blue to his ball.

"Yes. That color would suit you." She finally answered.

He smirked.

"Oh! But will you be up to going?" She asked concerned.

"Of course I will." He said with a dismissive wave of his hand.

She nodded and graced him with a smile.

"I better go." She stated.

"Until tonight then." He said as he took her hand and kissed the back of it.

Kagome rose from the bed and unsure of what the proper thing to do would be, smiled at him before turning and leaving the tent.

"I must make a confession." Sesshomaru said softly in Kagome's ear as they danced slowly.

"And what is that?" She asked with a hint of a smile.

"While I was...unconscious, I had a vision of you."

She made to pull away from him, but he held her firmly.

"It was not a vision in the way that you must be thinking." He chucked before he added. "Which young ladies should not be thinking such unladylike thoughts."

"And what is to be said for you Prince Sesshomaru? As you must have thought them as well to know that I was thinking them." Kagome commented playfully.

"Ah. So you agree that you were thinking unladylike things?" He asked in an equally playful tone.

"...no." She blushed and looked away from him.

"I saw your lovely face." He started. "You were cheering for me." This caused her to look at him once more. "You looked absolutely radiant as you did at the games today."

"You say such flattering things milord." She said and looked away from him again.

"They are all true and I will not tell you again to call me by my name." He said in a teasing sort of way.

"Of course Sesshomaru."

He turned her and spun her away from him before pulling her to him once more. One of the advantages of being prince was that he could dance in whatever fashion suited him at the time. Everyone else attempted to follow his lead and spun their partners as well. Kagome noticed that he still wore her favors on his wrist.

"You still wear them?" She asked.

He looked down at his wrist and then back to her.

"I doubt that I will ever take them off." She bushed and wondered if that annoying reaction would ever go away. "They are lucky you know."

"Oh right!" She snorted, which caused Sesshomaru to laugh. "A fat lot of luck they brought you today."

"I awoke again did I not?" He asked with a grin.

"Do you ever cease to have something charming to say?" She asked with a smirk.

"No." He answered with a smirk of his own.

The evening was coming to an end much too soon for either of their liking. Sesshomaru sighed.

"What is it?" Kagome asked as the music stopped.

"Did you enjoy today Kagome?" He asked startling her. It was not the answer she had anticipated.

"Before of after you were crushed by your horse?" She joked a second later.

"Did you worry?" He asked suddenly.

She looked him in the eye, searching for the answer she thought he wanted. She had worried about him and in a completely different way then how someone should worry about the heir to the kingdom. Was that what he wanted to hear?

"Yes. We all did." She finally decided on.

"That is not what I asked. Did you worry."

"Yes. I...I was worried that you would never wake."

"I apologize for making you worry Kagome. I vow that I shall never do it again."

Kagome thought that was an odd statement to make being as how they had just met and all. But then again, nothing that day had been normal in the least. The other attendees began to disperse from the main hall and Sesshomaru pulled Kagome after him towards one of the exits. Once outside, away from unwanted watchers, he stopped and turned to her once more.

"Shall I call on you again tomorrow?" He asked silently praying that she would say yes. He had never been so captivated by a female before...and never by a human.

"If that is what you wish." She answered again automatically.

"Would you wish it as well?" He asked almost pleading with her.

"I would." She answered with a soft smile.

"Lady Kagome," He paused as he gently cupped her chin. "May I kiss you?"

"Yes." She answered breathlessly.

He smirked in triumph for a brief second before gently pressing his lips to hers. It was slow and soft, both simply happy to have the intimate contact with one another. Kagome gave a soft cry of disappointment when he pulled away from her.

"Until tomorrow then milady." He said with a prideful grin at the look of longing in her eyes.

"Yes. Tomorrow." She sighed.

"May I keep your favors?"

"You may..." She answered with a smirk. "But what may I keep?"

"My heart." He answered at once.

Kagome giggled as she pulled away from him.

"Ever the charmer." She said with as much seriousness as she could muster. "I shall keep it then if you wish to give it to me."

"I do Kagome." He said as she walked away into the night. "I do."
