There You'll Be

When I think back on these times
And the dreams we left behind
I'll be glad 'cause I was blessed to get
To have you in my life
When I look back on these days
I'll look and see your face
You were right there for me

Katara felt the grass tickle her back as she lay on the gentle slope of the hill, gazing up at the darkening sky. Her hair curled in long, dark waves along the green grass but she paid it no mind, wordlessly counting the stars as each light slowly, her eyes narrow. One hand was tucked carelessly behind her head; the other rested against her chest, so she could feel the steady thump of her heartbeat.

The soft sound of his footsteps announced his presence, but Katara didn't stir as Aang sat quietly beside her, crossing his legs like the old storytellers she remembered from her childhood. His knee gently brushed her elbow, and she found something oddly soothing in the intimate contact; shifting only slightly, she slid her arm out from under her head and rested her hand against his knee with a sigh.

"I thought of you."

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be
And everywhere I am there you'll be

She felt his eyes rest on her, but in his customary way Aang didn't push or ask what she meant; he simply waited. She hesitated for a moment, mindlessly stroking his knee with her fingers before speaking again. "When I saw him, I mean," she said at last. "The man who killed my mother."

"Odd time to be thinking of me."

Her soft snort of laughter made his lips curve, and he reached down to play with her hair; she relaxed at the familiar gesture and closed her eyes, but she didn't stop speaking. "I know, but it's true. There he was on his hands and knees, and I could have killed him, and I saw your face." She shrugged, the movement rustling the grass. "He was a pathetic man, Aang. Maybe in another time I would have pitied him. That was part of the reason I couldn't do it, but that wasn't the only one."

Katara waited.

Aang didn't ask.

Well you showed me how it feels
To feel the sky within my reach
And I always will remember all the strength
You gave to me
Your love made me make it through
Oh I owe so much to you
You were right there for me

Katara licked her lips. "Because I could have killed him, and instead I thought of you." A deep breath. "And what you said to me before… about forgiveness."

"You said you didn't forgive him."

"I didn't." Now that breath expelled, and she opened her eyes, tilting her head to look up at Aang. "I'm sorry, Aang, but I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive him."

A moment of thick silence as Aang processed this; he nodded wordlessly, and Katara breathed again. "So, if you didn't forgive him, why did you think of what I said?" the young Avatar asked, curiosity getting the better of him.

Katara hesitated a moment before looking away, back up at the dark blue blanket of stars.

"I realized then… if I killed him, I could never forgive myself. But worse than that… if I killed him, I knew you'd know. You're good at that," she added as an afterthought. "You're good at knowing me. And I knew that if I killed him you'd know." She exhaled quietly. "And I knew that deep down, you would never forgive me."

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be
And everywhere I am there you'll be

Aang's eyes widened. "Katara…"

The Waterbender cut him off, lifting her hand to wave it quickly; he fell silent at the gesture, knowing there was more she needed to say, for reasons that were her own. So he closed his eyes and kept watching her.

"I could live with it," Katara decided, resting her hand against her chest again when Aang fell silent. "It didn't make me feel better, but I knew I could kill him and I could live with it."

A beat.

"Then I thought of you." Katara's voice softened to a whisper, and her fingers stilled in their stroking of his knee. "And I realized you'd never forgive me." She laughed softly, almost bitterly. "It hurt; like someone was tearing my heart out. I don't know why it hurt, but it did. And I knew I couldn't live with that. I could live with my own guilt, but I couldn't live with losing you."

She swallowed the hot lump of tears that had sprung into her throat and nodded. "So. I thought you deserved to know that."

'Cause I always saw in you my light
My strength
And I wanna thank you now for all the ways
You were right there for me
You were right there for me

On that thought, Katara scrubbed at her eyes with the back of her hand and waited as silence fell again. It stretched on for a long, almost painful moment, and the Waterbender held her breath. Feeling something inside her ache, she started to move her hand from Aang's knee.

His hand gently covered hers, stilling her movement before it could even begin; his fingers gently wound with hers, and he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Tilting her head slightly, Katara met his gaze and smiled tiredly as he stroked the back of her hand with his thumb.

"Thank you, Katara. Thank you for telling me."

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be
And everywhere I am there you'll be

Together, they watched the stars gleam, small pinpoints of light in the darkness.

The End

I had the inspiration for this for the longest time, but it never worked out whenever I tried to write it down. Then I heard There You'll Be on Youtube, plugged the lyrics in, and it worked. Go figure.
