Chapter 6—Interlude

Rays of the morning sun seeped through the white curtains, falling on Jay's face. He woke with a dull ache in his head. He chose to lay there for a while with his eyes closed listening to the birds singing outside.

After a long moment, Jay opened his eyes and pushed the blankets away. He sat up, pulling his legs upto his chest. His whole body ached and he felt too stiff to be bothered to get up. However, within moments of him waking up, a soft knock was heard on the door as someone entered quietly. It was the hospital nurse.

"Oh, you're awake. Good morning," she said with a smile as she walked over to Jay. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling well," Jay replied as he watched the nurse take out a thermometer.

The nurse then went on taking Jay's temperature and blood pressure. She asked him several questions like 'does anywhere hurt?' and 'do you feel any nausea?'. She noted some things down on a piece of paper. Jay just sat there blankly, rather uninterested with whatever was happening.

Finally, once the nurse had finished, she gave Jay two small cups. One was filled with water and the other contained some pills.

"Those are pain killers and some vitamins," the nurse explained.

Jay nodded. He realised the nurse was waiting for him to take the pills, so he quickly swallowed them.

"Are you sure you're feeling okay?" the nurse asked again. "You were in a terrible condition and lost a lot of blood…"

"Yeah, I'm okay," Jay said.

The nurse sighed then nodded. "Okay, well get some more rest. Just call me if you feel any discomfort okay?" she said then walked out of Jay's room.

Jay lay back against the pillows, deep in thought. He still couldn't take in everything that had happened. He especially found it hard to believe what all his friends had said last night. He couldn't believe they would really accept every part of his past and still stay as close as ever to him.

Jay glanced around the room. It was so still and peaceful in comparison to all the tension and chaos from last night. It was as though nothing had ever happened. Then he spotted a door leading to the bathroom in the corner of the room and an idea sparked.

"I need to take a shower!" Jay exclaimed. There was still a lot of blood dried up on his skin and a shower would relax his tensed muscles.

Although Jay considered his idea a brilliant one, the process wasn't so easy. The whole thing was quite painful and uncomfortable to say the least. Firstly, getting off the bed and onto his feet took a lot of efort. Then staggering over to the bathroom was even worse.

Once Jay had finally gotten into the bathroom and awkwardly undressed himself, he was pleasantly standing under blissfully hot water. He did his best to keep the bandages as dry as possible as he worked soap into his skin and shampoo through his hair.

Once satisfied, Jay turned the shower off and stepped out, wrapping a large towel around him as he squeezed water out of his hair. He grabbed his clothes and walked back into his room, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"I feel so much better now," Jay sighed contentedly.

He then looked down at his torn, blood stained, muddy clothes in disgust. "Man, do I really have to change back into those? I can hardly be bothered going back to the Oresoren Village to get more clothes right now though…"

Jay gave a big sigh of defeat. The tattered clothes would have to do for now.

Jay was just about to get changed when suddenly he heard a sharp knock at the door. He was about to call out that he 'wasn't decent' but the person didn't wait for a reply and the door flew open. Within moments Chloe appeared in the room. She opened her mouth to say something then she froze.

"Jay!" Chloe half-screamed in shock. Her face was growing red as she stared at Jay. "I-I-I'm uh, I apologise!!"

Then as quickly as she had come, she was gone again.

"Right…" Jay was slightly disturbed but decided to ignore what just happened and continued to put his tank-top and shorts on.

"Chloe?" he called. "It's uh safe to come in now if you're still there."

Surely enough, Chloe had been standing outside the door, very embarrassed. The door creaked open slowly and Chloe entered the room, rather cautiously this time.

"Jay!" she burst out suddenly. "I'm sorry, really sorry!"

"Chloe, don't worry. No big deal."

"Right," Chloe said, trying to calm down. "Yes, you're right. So you took a shower?"

"…yeah," Jay replied.

"No! I meant to say, how are you feeling?" Chloe cried.

Jay laughed. "Chloe, why don't you take a seat? And I'm feeling fine thanks."

Chloe nodded and sat down. "That's good to hear," Chloe said and smiled.

"Actually, can you do me a favour, Chloe?" Jay asked.

"Of course Jay. I'm more than happy to help," Chloe replied. "What can I do for you?"

"I want some clothes," Jay said. "Just until I go back to the Oresoren Village. Mine are, well, just as you can see."

"Ah…" Chloe said, observing the state of Jay's clothes. "Sure Jay, I'll go and ask Coolidge. I'm sure he'll lend you something to wear."

"Thanks Chloe," Jay said as he watched Chloe get up.

"I'll be back shortly," Chloe told him before she left the room.

Chloe walked out of the hospital's front doors and started making her way towards Sennel's house.

"Oh, what a mistake…" Chloe whispered, embarrassed as she recalled her greetings with Jay. "Okay, I'm going to stop thinking, stop thinking, stop thinking—"

"About what?!"

Chloe jumped as someone appeared right in front of her.

"Norma! Don't shock me like that!" Chloe said as she stopped and stared at the curious treasure hunter.

"I'm sorry C!" Norma laughed. "Anyway, what are you so flustered about? Tell me! Tell me!"

"I-It's nothing!" Chloe protested.

"Really? I don't think so! Those pink cheeks are telling me otherwise!" Norma teased. "Is it about Senny?"

"No! Of course it's nothing to do with Coolidge!" Chloe said, raising her voice.

Norma tilted her head to one side. "Really? Then who's it about if it's not about Senny? Hmmm, I doubt it's Teach…Red?"

"No not Sandor!" Chloe cried. "If you really must know, it's about Jay!"

"JJ?" Norma said, a little surprised. "Oh okay. Uh…what exactly about him...?"

"Ah…why?" Chloe asked, taken aback by Norma's sudden change in approach.

"I'm just, you know, curious," Norma said simply. "That's all."

"Well, I went to see how he was feeling just then," Chloe began, as she started walking again with Norma at her side.

"Yeah, I was just gonna go check on him too," Norma commented. "Anyway, and then?"

"And he told me his clothes are ruined so he wanted me to get something he could wear for now," Chloe explained.

"Oh…" Norma said, then thought briefly about what Chloe had just told her. "Then why are you so…Oh! I get it! You saw him naked!"

"Norma! Keep your voice down!" Chloe said, panicking as she looked around to see if anyone had heard.

"Okay, okay. And?" Norma pushed.

"And what?" Chloe asked. "What do you mean?"

"You gotta tell me the details C!" Norma said in a matter-of-fact tone.

"What details?" Chloe said in exasperation.

"Look at you C! You're blushing heaps!" Norma laughed. "Better cool down before we arrive at Senny's place! Oh wait, we're here already."

"Norma…" Chloe mumbled as she walked upto the front door and pushed it open. She assumed he'd be asleep anyway so didn't bother knocking, despite her bad experience this morning.

Luckily, Chloe was indeed right and the girls found Sennel sound asleep, half falling out of bed.

"Coolidge, wake up," Chloe called, giving Sennel a gentle nudge. "Coolidge!"

"No, no, no," Norma said. "This is how you do it!"

Chloe stepped out of Norma's way as the treasure hunter towered over Sennel.

"What?" Sennel yelled as he jumped out of bed, absolutely alarmed at the shrieks he was hearing.

"Mornin' Senny!" Norma said with a big smile.

"Morning," Sennel replied, yawning. "Hey Chloe, what's wrong? You look upset."

"It's nothing for you to worry about!" Chloe huffed.

"O-okay, if you say so," Sennel said, slightly afraid. "Uh, so, what're you guys up to?"

"Well," Norma said. "JJ needs some change of clothes, so can he borrow some of yours?"

"Yeah sure," Sennel replied, standing up and walking to his closet. "I think there's something that might fit him…somewhere…"

Chloe and Norma laughed.

"Well c'mon! He's tiny compared to me…Hmm how bout these?" Sennel said as he pulled out a black top and some white trousers.

"That should be fine," Chloe agreed. "Let's go and get these to him. Coolidge would you like to come?"

"Sure, let's go."

It wasn't long before Norma, Chloe and Sennel arrived at the hospital. The three walked upstairs to where Jay's room was.

"Jay," Sennel called. "It's Sennel."

Sennel then entered the room, leaving the girls to wait outside.

"Hey C?" Norma was saying as they waited.

"Wanna go for drinks tonight?" Norma said excitedly.

"At the bar?" Chloe asked.

"Yeap! With everyone? To celebrate?"

"Celebrate what?" Chloe asked, trying to remember if she'd forgotten something.

"Celebrate anything! Just have some fun!" Norma grinned. "Wooo!"

"What's so exciting?" Sennel asked as he poked his head out of the door. "Wanna come in now?"

"Cool! Is Jay all dressed, unlike this morning?" Norma said cheekily.

Sennel gave her a puzzled look and Norma just pointed a finger at Chloe.

"Don't look at me!" Chloe yelled and pushed Sennel out of the way to go inside.

Norma cracked up and followed Chloe.

"Morning," Jay greeted.

"JJ!" Norma said happily.

Jay smiled at her as she flung her arms around his shoulders, almost diving onto the bed.

"Ow Norma!" Jay complained half heartedly.

Norma giggled then jumped up onto the bed and sat next to Jay. This surprised Jay for a second, but he found it quite comforting to have Norma next to him.

"Feeling better?" Norma asked.

"Yeap," Jay replied.

"Cool! Then you can come for drinks tonight!" Norma announced.

"Norma, isn't that a bit much?" Sennel said.

"Yes, he should rest some more," Chloe added.

"Ooh, but everyone has to come!" Norma whined.

"I'll be there as long as I can get there without falling over," Jay told Norma.

"Really? Yes! You coming Senny?" Norma said. "You are? Yes okay."

"Hey! I didn't say anything yet!"

"Eh whatever. Can you ask Shirls if she wants to come?" Norma asked Chloe. "She's not in the Merines Village tonight right? I'll go find Red and Teach and G-Girl. And we can party!"

"I'll go look for Shirley then," Chloe informed and got up to leave.

"See ya tonight C!" Norma said, waving to Chloe.

"So do you know where the others are?" Norma asked Sennel.

"Well, I know Will went to Dolcha to straighten things out," Sennel said. "And I think Grune went with him to explain what happened last night at the fight."

"Ooh, and Red?"

"He's probably at his camp," Jay said.

"Then I'll go look for Red and you can go to Dolcha to get Teach and G-Girl okay?" Norma told Sennel.

"Alright! Charge!" Norma said cheerfully. "I'll see all of you tonight!"

So here they were. The Fun Bunch were all gathered around a table at the bar. The dimly lit rom was quite crowded with customers and a pianist was in the corner, performing some jazz entertainment.

"Another beer!" Will called in a loud, rather drunken voice.

"Here too!" Moses yelled, raising his empty glass.

"Haha! Teach looks so funny!" Norma said, holding her stomach. "He's so drunk! Already!"

"You're close to it yourself," Jay commented as he watched Norma finish yet another cocktail, her cheeks flushed.

"I am not! Not even close! I need another one!" Norma announced as she went to order another drink.

"So did everything go well today in Dolcha?" Shirley asked Will and Grune.

"Oh yes, very well! All thanks to Will!" Grune answered.

"Oh yes, oh yes!" Will said, slurring. "Who do you think I am? Just leave everything up to me! Ahaha!"

"I hope everything actually went well. Can we really trust them?" Sennel said wearily.

"I'm not sure…Both Grune and Will look quite intoxicated," Chloe observed.

"How about you Chloe? You've been drinking quite a lot," Sennel said. "You hold your alchohol well."

"Coolidge, this is non-alchoholic," Chloe told him. "I'm intending to train early tomorrow morning so I've only had one drink."

"Oh, no fun C!" Norma complained as she returned with her new drink.

"Sennel, how about you?" Shirley asked worriedly. "Please don't over drink. You'll regret it tomorrow. Maybe I should stay with you tonight in case you have a hangover in the morning."

"I will too if I can be of any help," Chloe added.

"Look at you Senny!" Norma laughed. "I'm so jealous! Why do you always get so much attention? From two sexy girls like C and Shirl? Lucky man!"

"Yes, right," Sennel said in a weak voice.

Jay was happily sipping his drink, listening to everyone's conversation until a certain cheeky Merines girl made a startling comment.

"Well Norma?" Shirley said challengingly. "I just think there might be someone here who thinks you're the sexy one tonight."

Jay's eyes grew wide and he quickly glanced around the table. Who could Shirley be referring to? If he was correct, both Will and Moses were interested in Grune. Sennel couldn't decide between Chloe and Shirley which left…

"Everyone's noticed you know," Shirley whispered in Norma's ear. Shirley then couldn't stop giggling when she saw the blushes on Norma and Jay's faces.

"Lil bro, blushin' again?" Moses teased.

"This is just the, uh, the drink makes me go red," Jay quickly lied.

"Yeah yeah! Keep goin'! Say what cha like!" Moses snickered.

Many more glasses were emptied as the night grew later and later. Grune spent most of her time on the dance floor. Moses chatted up one of the female baristas. Will drank more beer. Sennel and Norma ended up drunk which was good amusement for Chloe, Shirley and Jay.

However, eventually someone went to call Csaba to escort Moses back to his camp. Will and Grune were seen parading out of the bar together. Shirley and Chloe both decided they'd stay with Sennel for the night to make sure he'd be okay. And as for the remaining two…

"JJ…I'm drunk!" Norma said as she laid her head on the table.

"Yeah, you are." Jay sighed. "What to do with you now…"

"JJ…You won't leave me will you?" Norma said. "If you do…I'm gonna get really angry! And I'll make you play strip poker with the whole group!"

Jay sighed again. "Okay, let's go home."

"Okay…" Norma groaned and pushed herself up.

Norma swayed dangerously and Jay put an arm around her shoulders to support her. He was really glad he hadn't drunk a lot tonight.

The cold air was refreshing as Jay and Norma stepped outside the bar. Norma was leaning heavily on him as they walked slowly toward the inn.

"JJ?" Norma mumbled.

"…actually…nothing," Norma giggled.

"Sure?" Jay asked.

"No," Norma replied.

"Then go on," Jay urged.

"No, I'll regret it," Norma said.

"How can you know?" Jay asked. "Especially since you're so drunk."

"Heh, maybe you're right," Norma said. "Well is it true?"

"About what Shirl was saying…you heard her right…?"

"As in 'yes' to 'I heard her'? Or 'yes' to…well…you know…" Norma mumbled.

"Yes to…" Jay took a deep breath. He wasn't sure whether he should say it or not, but Norma was drunk and she probably wouldn't remember a thing in the morning. So he decided he would bring up his courage. "I love you Norma."

"Me too," Norma giggled.

Jay was shocked with what he heard. He was so excited that he felt as though he could fly. He knew that there was a possibility that Norma was too drunk to be taken seriously, but he was happy anyway. He hugged her closer to him.

Then they arrived at the inn and Jay took Norma up to her room. He wasn't sure if he should leave Norma alone, but he was afraid she might get sick so he decided to spend the night on the rug in her room.

"We're here now," Jay told Norma who was almost asleep.

"Okay…G'nite JJ…" Norma mumbled before falling onto her bed in a peaceful slumber. "And by the way…JJ…I won't forget what you said earlier okay…? No taking it back anymore…"

'Is she serious?' Jay thought but pushed that idea aside.

He reached over to take Norma's handbag off her shoulder, so she could sleep more comfortably. As he went to place it on a nearby table, something fell out.

It was a silver chain, with something shaped like a teardrop attached to the end…and it looked somewhat familiar. Jay went to pick it up. As he did so the object began to glow brightly. Jay gasped and stared at his hands which were glowing as well. It was like when he used eres.

"Norma?" Jay called.

He wanted to find out more about what this thing was. However, Norma made no signs of waking up. Jay sighed and stared down at the bright glow at this hands. He then put the object down on the table.

"I'll ask her in the morning.." Jay decided, then laid down on the rug to get some sleep.
