This is in response to the Random Character Challenge on HPFC. I do not own anything about Harry Potter it all belongs to JKR.
Regulus stood in the dark alley way of the small muggle village hoping beyond all hope that he would meet him. When he had first sent the note, Regulus knew there were plenty of reason for him not to trust him and even more reasons for him not to show up. He knew it must look like a trap, but it was too late now all Regulus could do was hope that he would show up.
"What do you want?" James Potter asked causing Regulus to look up and step away from the wall he had been leaning on. James was carefully making his way toward Regulus with his wand pointed right at him.
Regulus didn't respond at first, but instead withdrew his own wand and tossed it on the ground in hopes that it would confirm to James that this was not a trap. It didn't work though; James kept his wand point at him.
"I need your help." Regulus stated causing James to laugh.
"My help? What could I possibly help you with Regulus, unless you want to turn me in to You-Know-Who?" James retorted.
"If I wanted to do that would I had tossed my wand aside?" Regulus stated.
"How do I know you don't have someone hiding close by? I can assure you I do." James commented as he kept his distance.
"I'm not here to turn you over James. I just thought that since you've helped Sirius so often over the past few years that maybe you could help me as well." Regulus said as he tried to control his temper due to the fact that things were not turning out the way he had planned.
"Well, get on with it what do you need my help with?" James asked.
Regulus took a deep breath, "I need you to help me find a way out."
James laughed again, "A way out?"
"James, this is serious. I want out and I need help." Regulus exclaimed.
James laughter died away as he watched his best friend's younger brother closely. Finally he nodded, "You do realize you won't survive more then a few days once he finds out."
"I know that James, can you help me out or not?" Regulus stated in frustration.
James was silent for a long time before shaking his head, "I don't know what I can do Regulus, I still don't even know if this is some sort of trap or not."
Regulus threw his arms up in frustration then slowly bent over to pick up his wand, "Just forget about it. I don't know what I was thinking asking you for help, I don't need it. I'll get out and I'll be alive and I'll be the one laughing at you."
With out giving James a chance to respond, Regulus apparated leaving James in the alleyway alone, after a few moments of silence James called out, "He's gone, you can come out now."
Sirius came out of his hiding spot at the other end of the alleyway and joined his best friend. As they stood together with their wands pointed in different directions James asked, "Do you think he was serious?"
Sirius shook his head, "I have no idea."
James didn't think about the encounter again until word of Regulus' death reached him several months later. For the first time James thought back on that night and wished he had taken Regulus a little more seriously then he had.
A/N Talk about a challenge, I've never really written much on the Maurders Era so I hope I didn't get to OOC. This was really fun to write though and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Thank you for taking the time to read it.
