The day the other him, the original him, came to take Rose away was the day the new him died.
Not in a melodramatic sort of a way. There was no hopeless man wandering the world--Pete's world--just because the woman he loved left him for another. But in the literal sort of way.
And not in the grand, romantic sort of a way either. Dying from a broken heart was so cliché after all, and if there was one thing he wasn't--this new, new, new Doctor--he wasn't a cliché sort of a man.
No, he died simply, happily, from old age, just as Rose had said he would. On the exact day, at the exact time, she'd predicted.
Changing from one species to another, losing your regenerative powers in the process, would do that to a person. Living a full, wonderful life--a human life--with the woman that you loved would, naturally, make the dying far less painful.
He'd always known they wouldn't last, that there was no forever for them, for him and her. Not the sort that he could give her anyway. No, in a strange twist of fate, it was Rose who was destined to outlive the Doctor, not the other way around. And he was fine with that.
Because, in the end, he had the fantastic life with her he'd always wanted. They lived and they loved together, fully, unconditionally. They didn't live in the shadow of his twin or in dread of the day they both knew would come. She knew, by reading the time lines--it seemed she hadn't just inherited a longer life from Bad Wolf, but many other, Time Lord qualities--where fate would lead them.
