"It's burning. Hot flames. Coal. I can smell it." River fixes Sam with knowing eyes and frowns slightly. "It's not his place. He shouldn't be there. Oh god."
Collapsing into a nervous bundle of limbs, she begins to rock back and forth on the pads of her feet.
Sam watches her grimly and places a claming hand on her shoulder. "You feel it too?" He pulls her closer to him and wraps his arms around her small frame. "I thought I was the only one."
The only response he gets from River is a sudden jolt as the fear wracks her body. He brushes a hand through her hair.
"River? How are you doing?"
Her eyes are wide, scared.
Sam settles down into a more comfortable position and waits for her to come back into herself once more.
Twenty minutes later, she murmurs his name. "Sam."
He glances up. "Yeah? You feeling okay?"
River smiles. "I'm okay."
Squeezing her hand gently, Sam returns the smile. "That's good. That's really good. I hate to see you so scared." His smile fades slightly. "We've got to go rescue my brother in a bit. Do you think you'll be up for it?"
A nod. Brown eyes full of certainty. "I'm ready."
