Sam stands hidden in the shadows of a building on a street corner, ready to step into the light of a street lamp a few feet away if a potential client shows up. His clothes are too tight, he's tired and cranky but he's almost out of food and the new semester is coming up. He'll need new books.
He's just about to give up for the night when he hears the familiar rumble of a car engine a street away. Headlights come around the corner and Sam freezes in the shadows. The car comes to a stop and Sam tries to decide if he's relieved or annoyed.
The engine cuts and Sam fights the urge to run, knowing it wouldn't change anything. The car door squeaks open and Sam holds his breath.
"Get in the car, Sam."
Dean. Sam doesn't move.
"I know you're there. I had to give a girl forty bucks two blocks down just to tell me if she'd seen any six-foot tall, brown haired dorks hanging around at night. Apparently there's this really hot one she sees every last week of the month on this corner. I think she needs glasses."
Sam steps out of the shadows. "You're an ass, you know that?"
"Yeah, now get in the car. There's food, money and no sex waiting for you. Also, Dad thinks I'm in Nevada," Dean adds before getting back into the car.
Sam's never been more grateful before.
