Title: A New Era
Disclaimer: So not mine. Not even close.
Summary: Calleigh and Natalia watch the election.
A/N: This was written at the request of a friend who wanted preg!fic. This is as close as I can manage, since as a general rule. I despise little children. This is also election!fic (if there is such a thing) The opening lines are directly taken from President Elect Barack Obama's acceptance speech.
"This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.
Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America"
The sound of wildly cheering crowds gradually faded as a hand reached out and downed the volume on the tv. The people in a far northern state could still be seen to be cheering wildly, but inside the airy Miami home, with the soft ocean breeze drifting from the moon touched waves outside, all was quiet.
The two women wrapped together on the couch looked at each other, and two pairs of eyes, darkened and shining with emotion, caught and held each other.
"It's a new era."
"A better one, I hope," Natalia replied softly, her hand unconsciously straying to the soft, rounding swell of her belly, clearly visible at seven months along.
Calleigh's fingers covered hers, the touch drawing her gaze to the sight of their joined hands. Creamy gold and bronzed skin entwined, as if protecting the new life beneath them.
"She's going to grow up in such an amazing world," the words were whispered, but the awe the soft accent held was clear. Awe at the miracle of a child that would be theirs, and awe at the power of a nation, and a people, to rise up and control their destiny.
Pressing a lingering kiss to her lover's lips, Natalia could only smile gently. Safe in Calleigh's arms, with their daughter growing inside her and the promise of a new direction for the country they loved so much, she could only reply softly, "a very amazing world," before closing her eyes and snuggling closer to Calleigh, content just to imprint this moment on her memory forever.
