He's got a secret.
A secret that fills him with golden sunshine, bathing him in radiance long after she's left. A secret that fills his heart with desire, that makes him want to reach out, stroke those golden curls, trace fingers over a brilliant smile that betrays a spirit so bright, her essence seems to shine in the light.
But he's never reached out, never told her how much he really, really loves. Why should he, when he has the privilege of being there, fighting side by side with her every day of their seemingly immortal lives? Why should he, when her mere presence can trigger a convulsive state of intoxication that lasts for hours, even days?
One day perhaps, they will die. They're self-regenerating; not true immortals destined to see the fall of mankind. But what they both fear more is being left behind, having to clasp the hand belonging to the one they secretly love; to feel and see and taste the life draining away, leaving shattered remnants of a love that could never have been.
A fate truly worse than death.
Peter is selfish; he can't lie and say he doesn't want to be the one left behind. But if he has to choose, he'd choose to survive if only to save Claire from that living death.
He's ready, willing, needing, to make that ultimate sacrifice, to save her.
And only then, will he tell her his secret.
His truth, and love, will finally set her free.
