A/N: Sooo here's the next chapter. *hides behind a large rock* Sorry it took so long. I'll explain at the end, so you can just start reading. Thanks Auntie L once again for making writing pretty! You are the best beta out there.
A Second Chance
"There you are Hermione. I was looking in the Common Room for you this whole time." A plump little motherly medi-witch named Carla said walking into the long-term patient's room. It was becoming late in the evening and there was a young, very pregnant, witch watching the sunset through the big windows overlooking the hospital gardens. "You've received some letters, and I brought you the Prophet. It'll be good for you to keep up on current events."
Hermione looked over at her main caregiver with the same confused look she gave everyone who came into her room. "Is that my name? Hermione?" She asked, trying to stand up, but not doing so well with her big belly.
"Yes, dearie, that's your name. Now sit down. I've brought you some things." She set down an envelope, a few photos, and wand on Hermione's bed side table. "Your young man sent a letter, and he's on the front page of the paper today! Isn't that exciting?" Clara pointed at the paper where Viktor Krum was flying around a stadium holding a Snitch in his hand. Hermione read the short write up under the photo.
"V is for Viktor and victory! Krum leads his team to the playoffs for the Euro Cup. After cutting his leave of absence short, he's come back better than ever. All he had to say about his unexpected return was 'My biggest fan vould hate for me to sit out the season vhen the rest of my team is vorking so hard. It is time for me to stop sulking and get back on the broom. I vant to make her proud, no matter vhat.'"
"How is he able to fly on a broom like that?"
"It's a mix of magic and great talent." Clara answered.
"Magic isn't real…is it?"
Carla sighed and nodded. She and Hermione had almost the same conversations every day. "You're a witch, love, and you live in a world where people use magic every day. Some people use it for great evil, like You-Know-Who. He was defeated by Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and you." Nothing. "After some time, you married Viktor Krum. He's the father of your baby." At the mention of a baby the young lady put her hand on her big stomach with a dazed look.
"I'm going to have a baby?"
"Yes, any day now! If you feel even the slightest pain you tell me, alright?" Hermione nodded, but didn't say anything. Clara sighed and left the room quietly, leaving her charge with her thoughts.
The young woman closed her eyes trying to remember, but it felt like such a fog. Even something as recent as that day's events were hard for her to recall. Her mind was a hazy ocean of understanding and confusion. She could read, write, speak, and move around like any other normal pregnant woman. What frustrated her was how she could never remember anything personal. She was trying to keep hold of the names she had just been told, but it wasn't sticking. "I fought with two guys called…Tom and Jerry…" she whispered out loud, but the names didn't sound right. "I'm pregnant and the father of my child is…is…" She couldn't remember. Long minutes ticked by and she wondered where she even was and why she was there.
The mother-to-be looked around the room wondering where she was. It was painted a soft blue and decorated in a simple and tasteful style. It felt safe, but lonely. She stood and went to the table where the letters had been left, forgetting or disregarding Clara's words. She chose one of the envelopes because there was something obviously inside of it. Slowly she opened it and shook out it's contents. Out fell a ring and a note. She picked up the ring and smiled a little. It was very pretty with three diamonds – one star-cut diamond in the center, flanked by two round diamonds. Something was very familiar about the piece of jewelry. She slid it on her finger before reading the note.
I promise this ring and its star will always guide you home to me, no matter how far apart we are.
She looked at the note and the ring for the longest time. Viktor…the name meant something. And those words rang familiar to her. Not in hear head, but rather, her heart. She slowly looked around the room and a flood of emotion over took her. She was not home where she belonged. 'Home' was with another person. Was this 'Viktor' a part of her home? The star shaped diamond had a pull on her somehow, so she slipped it back off of her finger to examine it more closely. Hermione started pacing and rereading the note.
"Viktor…" She whispered as if saying the name out loud would help somehow. She looked out the window and noticed how quickly it was getting dark. A few of the stars had come out, including the big bright North Star. Hermione slowly stood up and stared at the stars as if seeing them for the first time. Her body seemed to move on its own as she clapped and spun around in a circle. She wanted to say something and felt the words were on the tip of her tongue, but she just couldn't get them out. A need and urgency was growing in her heart that told her to repeat her actions. Again she clapped and spun around. "Please…"The words were there and she could almost taste them. Clap. Turn. "Please let...please let…" Clap. Turn. "Please let this be a loving…a loving..." Clap. Turn. "Please let this be a real loving marriage in the end!" She nearly shouted. As soon as the words left her mouth memories started flooding her mind.
She was married to Viktor Krum, whom she first met at Hogwarts. Hogwarts was her school, where she had learned magic with her two best friends Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Harry was the Boy Who Triumphed, the Chosen One. They had fought with the Order of the Phoenix to defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort. So many connexions were being made in her mind so quickly that she had to fall back in her chair from the emotional force of it all.
"Viktor Krum." Hermione stared into her ring and was shocked to see him in the star. He was flying on his broom and looked to be very wet, but she knew who he was. Never in her life had she wanted anything more than to be by his side. In that very moment her whole heart and soul went into that one desire and the next thing she knew, she wasn't in her room at St. Mungo's, but standing behind some of the Bulgarian National Quidditch reserve players in the stadium she had been to dozens of times.
It was a dark and rainy night on the field, but the stadium was brightly lit so she could see players in red and black flying over her head. Her heart leapt in her chest at the sight of her Seeker. Without taking her eyes off of him Hermione walked as quickly as she could to one of the players and yanked his broom out of his hands. She vaguely heard someone yell in Bulgarian when she kicked off and started flying.
A great commotion broke out in the stadium as the games announcer started shouting, "Borislav has called a time out! It seems someone has flown onto the field! Unless I am very much mistaken…that's Hermione Granger!" Hermione ignored all the shouting from the crowd and players. She flew towards Viktor and stretched her hand to him when she started getting close. He turned around on his broom just in time to see her.
She almost over-shot him, but was able to grab onto his sleeve and fall into him as the broom she was riding raced by, leaving her fast behind. He barely had time to register what was going on when one of his arms locked around her and his other fought with his broom to keep them both from falling off. It was almost a losing battle as the pair headed straight for the ground, but he was able to pull up just enough to stop a few feet above the ground. With haste, he landed and threw the broom aside as he helped Hermione stand up properly on shaky legs.
"Vhat the hell do you think you are doing, Hermione?" He yelled at her with his hands planted fully on her shoulders. Her eyes were bright staring at him, but she didn't flinch as his harsh tone. "Do you realize how hurt you could gotten up there?" His voice was filled with angry concern.
"I realize it's not the smartest thing I've done, but I just had to see you." She yelled back to be heard over the stadium commotion.
"That vas stupid. You could have vaited until after the game!"
"I would have, but I don't know how I even got here in the first place! And when I saw you I couldn't stop myself!"
"You should not even be here in your condition. You should be in your room at St. Mungos!"
"But that's not where my home is. My home is wherever you are, Viktor!" It was his name on her lips that made him freeze and realize for the first time who he was talking to.
"You said my name." She nodded her confirmation.
"You remember me?"
"Yes, I do." Hermione smiled and cupped his cheek. "I remember that first day you talked to me in the library. And the day you asked me to the Yule Ball." He fell to his knees in front of her and looked up to see her smile get bigger. "I remember the day you asked me to marry you. And the wedding and the honeymoon and the baby." She took his hand and placed it on her stomach. "But most of all I remember how much I love you. Zabini tried to take that away from us, but your words, the ring, and our love gave it all back it. I'm sorry I ever forg -" Before she could finish, he stood and pressed his lips firmly against hers. It probably wasn't the most romantic setting, but the feeling that filled the kiss was unlike anything either of them had felt before.
He broke it to catch his breath, "I love you too. More than I can say in vords right now." He said fiercely. "I am sorry I could not protect you the vay I should have. I vill never let something like this happen again, I promise." They kissed again, but it was Hermione broke away to flinch and put a hand on her stomach.
"Vhat happened?" He asked worried at the wince on her face.
"I'm not really sure, but that didn't feel good."
"Hermione! Viktor!" Lev had flown down at some point and was smiling at the pair of them. "As touching as this reunion is, ve need to start the game back up." The reality that they were standing in the middle of a Quidditch match sank in. Viktor picked up Hermione into his arms with a determined look on his face.
"Tell Coach to get a reserve Seeker."
"Alright. I'll check on you two after the game." Hermione was about to say something, but winced again. "Go see Asen!" Viktor nodded and then ran off with his love in his arms. Vaguely, he heard the game resume, but he was too focused on getting to the team healer.
He raced inside to the infirmary kicking opening door. "Asen!" He had to yell because the game could still be heard from inside. The healer took one look at the pair and motioned for Viktor place Hermione in one of the big plush chairs nearby.
"Vhat happened?" the normally lazy wizard was unusually focused and professional.
"I don't know. I was just looking at my ring, and when I saw Viktor in the ring I appeared here."
"Unintentional Apparating. It is not entirely unheard of it though it is rare in adults. You are not supposed to Apparate after your sixth month. Too dangerous because it send you into premature labor. My vife made that mistake. Viktor, you go contact your family. I'll go and get a midwife from the nearby town she'll be able to tell us if it' We should be back before pains get working."
"I hope nothing is wrong with the baby. I don't know what to do. I'm not prepared for this." She said quietly, but the panic in her voice was obvious. Viktor knelt down and took her hand in his. He moved her head gently so that he could look her in the eye.
"Nothing is going to happen to you or the baby vhile I am around. No matter vhat is going to happens ve vill get through it together, I promise." He gave her a quick kiss before standing up. "I have to go tell Harry and Kamen vhat's going on and they vill pass the news along." He took one step when he felt her grab his sleeve.
"Please don't leave me."
"Never again." He said it with such confidence and assurance that she could only smile and let go of his sleeve.
Ten hours later found Hermione back at St. Mongos, only now she was in a room on the birthing ward rather than the permanent patients' ward. The midwife had deemed it alright for Hermione to be Flooed out of the stadium infirmary since it was still so early in the labor, and she had done her best to assure the parents-to-be that the baby was far enough along that an early birth would not be a problem. The game was long over though most of the team had opted to stay and await the birth of their Seeker's first child. Sitting with them was most of the Weasley and Krum families. All had rushed to the stadium when they were told about what happened. The reunions had been bitter-sweet.
They all rejoiced over Hermione's miraculous recovery, but were disappointed to figure out that there were still patches of her memory that were missing. Harry and Ron blamed themselves for not realising who was after her in the first place. Dorian blamed himself for not have adequate wards around her to prevent from the whole thing from happening. Molly was bitter over the fact that Blaise had taken so many months of happiness from the family. And Kamen just said he was glad that she was back. The rest of the families expressed similar sentiments, but eventually was sent to the waiting room.
A midwife was coaching the couple through the labor process as Mari and Molly would come in from time to time as to help in any way they could. Viktor stayed by her side the whole time holding her hand and wishing the whole thing could be over. He hated seeing her in such pain.
As the midwife finished checking her once again, she declared, "I need you to breathe deeply, dear. It's almost time for you to start pushing."
"That's what you said an hour ago!" Hermione moaned, trying not to scream at the woman. Viktor wiped her brow, but couldn't think of anything to say. They had gone through so much together in such a short time that one would think they were prepared for anything. Even though she was in such pain Viktor knew that they would make it though and soon they would be holding their firstborn in their arms. They had the strength to overcome anything as long as they were together.
"Hermione, marry me." Viktor said suddenly as she squeezed his hand with all her might.
"Do you really think now is the best time for proposals, Viktor?" She asked as the contraction passed giving her a quick chance to breathe before the next one hit.
"Yes! I almost lost you. I never vant to go through that again. Fuck the laws! Fuck the vizards and vitches who think they can control our lives. I vant you to be my vife not because ve have to, but because ve vant to. Vill you marry me? Vill you give us a chance to start over?"
Hermione smiled at him. She was sweaty, her hair was a mess, her eyes were red rimmed and teary, and she was wearing nothing but an over-sized Quidditch shirt and a blanket. Yet never had she looked more beautiful to him than she did at that moment when she said "yes", right before squeezing his hand as another contraction hit.
"I can almost see the baby crowning. So, next contraction I need you to push hard for me." The midwife said. After hours of labor it all came down to this one moment. In a few short minutes after a lot of pushing, screaming, and breathing the first cries of a baby were heard. The midwife smiled and handed the little one to a nurse to get cleaned up. "Congratulations! You two have a little boy!"
Hermione's eyes followed the nurse who was cleaning up their son and wrapping him up in blankets. She looked over to Viktor who too was staring over at the child in shocked awe. "We have a son Vikt…" She wasn't able to finish her sentence when another pain hit her. "Why does that feel like a contraction?" She grunted squeezing her love's hand once more. The midwife looked confused and ducked her head under the blanket that had yet to be removed. When she came up she was smiling.
"You're going to need to push again Hermione. It seems you have a second one on their way."
"What?" Hermione and Viktor shouted at the same time.
"Twins! Now push!" The second child came easier than her brother though her cries were no less loud. The nurse handed Hermione the first twin before taking the second from the midwife. "A girl this time! Congratulations!"
A few quick spells got mother and children cleaned up and comfortable. The nurse and midwife left, but not before telling the new parents they'd have a few minutes alone before people would be allowed in. Hermione still held their son while their daughter quieted down in her father's arms.
"Two…" was all Viktor could manage to say looking at his family. This was the moment he'd dreamed about and he thought he'd lost forever. His eyes filled with tears, but he wasn't sad. The utter joy in his heart could not be contained, so he leaned over carefully and kissed Hermione deeply. "I love you." He told her after breaking the kiss. "I love you so much."
Hermione was crying as well, but her smile was wide filled with pure happiness. "I love you too, Viktor." She whispered though her tears. They kissed again and smiled when their heard a commotion just outside the door.
"Looks like we only get a few seconds of peace. We need to come up with names for these little ones. Everyone will want to know."
"Athena." Viktor said looking down at the sleeping girl in his arms. "I know she is going to be just as smart and knowledge-hungry as her Mama."
"I love it! And how about Stoyan for our little man? It means to stand, right?" She knew from now on they would all stay together and stand as a family against anything that stood in the way of their happiness. Viktor kissed the top of her forehead.
"It is perfect. Now ve had better introduce them to the rest of their family before they start breaking down the door." He placed Athena in her arms as we walked toward the doors. Hermione watched him and looked down at their children. Her family. "Athena, Stoyan, I promise never to forget you or your Papa again." She looked up to see Viktor practically be pushed down by Mari and Molly. This wasn't a new beginning. Not really. It was more like the next book in the series of their lives. And Hermione was more than eager to see what happened next.
A/N: Well? Did you like it? I hope you did because it took a lot for me to get this chapter up. First of all I didn't know if I wanted it to be the last, and then I didn't know how the heck Hermione would reunite with Viktor. After all these years with the story in my head I never thought that far. Another thing that took so long to get this chapter out was I fell in love! And we're getting married soon as well as we've just moved into our own house. All these things kind of delayed this chapter, but I will NEVER abandon Fated! My goal now is to have the final chapter up and the rest of the story edited before my wedding at the end of September. So, sorry for the wait and then you so so much for continuing to read this fic.
