An Honest Answer

Will stood with Elizabeth, watching William splashing in the waves a short distance away. The ten year old looked to his father to make sure he was watching him launch the wooden boat they'd made together, turning dark eyes on him that could have been his.

Or not.

"Elizabeth, I love him and I love you, but I need the truth," he said softly, hoping she'd forgive him for doubting. "Is he mine?"

Her expression was unreadable, and Will was about to apologize for his petty suspicions until she answered him softly, turning his reclaimed life upside down.

"I don't know."
