"I told you, I already have someone that I love!"
"Well I won't except that, Ritsuka! I simply refuse to believe it!"
Ritsuka's eyes darkened, and he scoffed loudly.
"Well, you'd better wake up and smell the coffee, because this is reality, not one of your stupid daydreams. I don't love you, so get over it already. Just move on, okay?"
Yuiko's eyes widened at his harsh tone, and she could feel tears threatening to surface.
How could he say something like that? How could he be so heartless and cold? How…?
Ritsuka saw the torn expression on her face, and instantly regretted his words.
Sure she was annoying. Sure there was no way that they could ever be together, not only because he had absolutely no interest in her, but because his heart belonged to someone already. He didn't know how to make her understand that. Nothing could ever seem to stay in that airy head of hers.
Feeling as if he should apologize, he averted his eyes from her, and stared at an interesting stain on the floor.
"I really am sorry Yuiko, but there's nothing I can do about my feelings. I can't possibly make myself stop loving Soubi, and I wouldn't want to even if I could. If you could just try to understand…you're a really good friend, and I don't want to lose you."
Yuiko found it frustrating at how easily she felt she could forgive him. It just wasn't fair. How could he have this effect on her? Why did she have to love him so damn much?!
"I…understand. I don't like it, but I know that you must really care about Soubi a lot to be that committed to him."
"So…you forgive me?"
It hurt her so much inside, but she just couldn't find it in herself to hate him.
Ritsuka's relief knew no bounds. He felt truly overjoyed. He got to keep his lover and his friend. How lucky could you get?
Smiling now, he took her hand and looked her straight in the eye.
"So we're still friends, right?"
Yuiko was bleeding internally from a broken heart, but she couldn't afford to let her hurt show.
"Of course we are."
And she forced a huge smile to hide the endless pain inside.
