DISCLAIMER: I don't own Harry Potter or this song.
A/N: OK this is a very sad fanfic. Its from the character points on view. Focusing on Harry and Ginny, and Harry's actions in the final book. With the ending very different. Please have a box on tissues on hand. I find it better if I listen to the song as I read it.
Don't be a hero, come back to me, Harry.
All anyone could talk about is the war. As Harry's birthday approached I knew we would have to leave soon, but I found myself reluctant. There had already been one death from the order (mad eye) and my brother had lost his ear. If I left how many more will be gone when I return. But I will follow Harry were ever he goes, and he has to go face you-now-who even if he doesn't want to. I suppose that's just the hero he is.
The marchin' band came down along Main StreetThe soldier-blues fell in behindI looked across and there I saw BillyWaiting to go and join the lineAnd with her head upon his shoulderHis young and lovely fiancéeFrom where I stood, I saw she was cryin'And through her tears I heard her say
The door shut behind my brother and Harry as tears slowly streamed down my face. I knew that once they left that I might never see them again, but I couldn't see a future without Harry. The door closed softly and, once I was sure they were gone I whispered softly.
Don't be a hero, come back to me Harry."Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life""Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow""Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"
Ron's left. I knew he would. I'm glad in a way. He is one less person I need to worry about. I could go into this easier, if I knew both Ron and Hermione were safe. And….. Ginny. Oh how I miss her. HE is coming to this house. The place were it all began. I hope she can move on. But I suppose this is my destiny. (A/N: to save confusion this bit is placed at Godric hollows and yes Harry does survive this part)The soldier-blues were trapped on a hillsideThe battle raging all aroundThe sergeant cried "We've got to hang on, boys""We got to hold this piece a'ground""I need a volunteer to ride up""And bring us back some extra men"And Billy's hand was up in a momentForgettin' all the words she said
How could he do that? Wonder off into the woods without waking me. I don't care if it got Ron back. It was foolish. I sometimes wonder if he is try to throw his life away. He certainly acts like it sometimes, doing such stupid things. But I suppose that's the hero he is. I just wish he had heard Ginny's words. Maybe then he would be more careful.
Don't be a hero, come back to me Harry. She said"Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life""Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow""Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"
I knew he would go into the woods, if it meant he had a chance to save everyone. I even felt him pass me as he made his way there in his invisibility cloak, I didn't turn though. If he wanted to save people and be a hero then let him. I didn't want him to see my tears. It was around an hour later when a black owl came toward me with a letter saying harry was dead. I dropped it to the floor and carried on tending to the wounded,I heard his fiancée got a letterThat told how Billy died that dayThe letter said that he was a heroShe should be proud he died that wayI heard she threw that letter away
