John swallowed hard as he watched her through her office, wiping away the sweat that had collected on his palms. He could do this. It wasn't a big deal. And so what if she said no! It wouldn't be the end of the world now would it? 'I'm screwed,' he thought to himself as he glanced back at McKay standing nearby. The scientist rolled his eyes and tilted his head, urging Sheppard to do what he came there to do. John opened the door to her office, walking awkwardly inside, and his heart was beating a mile a minute the moment she looked up at him and smiled. Damn, why did she always have to do that to him? He was supposed to be better than this. He was Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard, Air Force… not John Sheppard, lovesick teenager. "John, hey," she greeted. Her eyes always seemed to brighten when she looked at him, or was that just hopeful thinking?
"Hey Elizabeth… you uh… busy?"
Elizabeth's smile grew just an inch as she closed her laptop and linked her hands. "I always have time for you, Colonel," she assured him.
John stuffed his hands in his pockets, shifting from one foot to the other as he looked down at her.
"Ummm would you care to sit down?" she asked, sensing his discomfort.
"No I'm fine… perfectly fine. I just… here's the thing. There's this… Carson thought it'd be great for moral to have like a Valentine's Day dinner out on one of the larger balconies. He's already asked Cadmen, McKay's taking Katie Brown, and Ronan asked Teyla… and I was thinking… if your not busy… maybe you could…" John huffed. He was seriously screwing it up. He really had regressed to lovesick teenager. He was sure McKay was laughing his ass off outside Weir's office.
Elizabeth grinned, leaning back in her chair, looking extremely amused. "Why Colonel, are you asking me out on a date?"
"Date? Uh no! Of course not! It would just be… two friends… going out to dinner… and maybe spending some time together in a romantic setting. In fact, it's really more like a…" John waved his hands around, desperate to find another word for it, "it's a non-date." It really was sad just how badly he was screwing things up. "But I mean, it's entirely up to you whether you wanna go… with me, in fact we could always just forget the whole thing-"
"John," she spoke calmly, cutting him off.
"I'd love to," she told him, eyebrow raised.
John cleared his throat. "Oh… well uh, cool. So Friday night… seven o'clock. I'll be by your quarters to pick you up."
"Sounds great, John, thank you for inviting me."
"Uh yeah… no problem. See you then." Sheppard flashed Elizabeth a brief smile before he turned around, waving goodbye before he walked out of her office. Not but five seconds later McKay was rushing over to him.
"So what'd she say?" he asked, following the Colonel.
"She said, 'yes'," John told him, flashing the scientist a cocky smile.
McKay smiled back. "I knew she would! And don't think I forgot about our bet! You owe me one giant chocolate cake! See, that's why I'm the brains and you're the brawns. You still refuse to accept the fact that you're in the presence of a true genius!" Rodney teased, sporting his own cocky grin.
Sheppard just rolled his eyes. "Shut up, McKay." He had a date to get ready for!
