Shawn looked up after putting the straws in the drinks and was met with the sight of Juliet.
"Jules! What are you doing her? What I mean is, you know, who-who-who's gonna fix Mr. Yang with her straightjacket and iron mask with face grill."
"Something tells me there's an entire precinct with officers bidding on that job."
"Uh. Can I interest you with a 'Necco Wafer'?"
"Shawn, can we just, talk, for a few seconds?" She asked, as she made her way over to him in a few strides.
Shawn stood there, mouth open, waiting.
"I just wanted to tell you that what you did today, I mean, I can't imagine being able to function at that level when your mom was…" She trailed off and looked nervously down at the floor. "I am uh, clearly not as good with words as you are, and um, I know that things between us have been a little complicated. And that there have probably been some mixed signals, mostly from me, with regards to the time that we spent together outside of the line of duty…"
"Look Jules, I," Shawn interrupted, having no clue where she was going with this sudden openness.
"Sh, sh. Just let me finish, I'm almost done I promise." She rushed. "What I'm saying is that I think, maybe, the best things, the richest things, aren't supposed to come easily. And that sometimes when everything else doesn't and, well, I think you deserve more than popcorn tonight." There was a long pause before she finally asked what she had been leading up to. "So why don't you let me take you to dinner?"
"Detective O'Hara are you asking me out on a date?"
"I am. A proper one." She whispered.
"Wow." Shawn whispered back, chuckling slightly. "I cannot believe this."
"All this time, and your timing is just awful."
Her face fell. "It is?"
"Yeah, just dreadful."
"I can't go to dinner with you Jules. I'm already on a date."
"You are?" Juliet questioned, disappointment quickly falling over the young woman. "What, here?"
"Yeah, ri-right now. It-it's weird, but uh, yeah. With Abigail."
"The one that got away." Juliet supplied knowingly.
She stood there for a moment before stepping forward and kissing Shawn's cheek gently. He closed his eyes as her soft lips meet his face, taking in the feeling.
"Get out there." She whispered, her face showing her disappointment. "She's not going to wait forever." She turned around as her eyes started to glaze over, and prayed that Shawn would leave soon.
"Ah." Shawn whispered, his fingers brushing the tingling spot where Juliet's lips had been only moments before. "Jules?"
She quickly turned, hoping that he'd decided to go with her.
"I am so sorry," She shook her head slightly, not understanding what this sudden apology was for, "for snapping at you earlier." He covered smoothly.
He nodded and she turned to leave.
He quickly finished up with the food and went back outside.
"You alright?" Abigail asked.
"Yeah, why would you even ask that?"
"Mostly because you look like you got punched in the stomach and stopped breathing for a few seconds."
"Wow. I didn't realize I was that transparent. The truth is, the truth is Abigail, everything is not okay. I don't know exactly, exactly, how to, how to say this…"
"Try using words to form a sentence." She jokingly suggested.
"I'm so, so sorry Abigail. They're all out of butter."
They joked about that until they go to the car, Juliet's offer still on Shawn's mind.
