Disclaimer: Bones doesn't belong to me. If it did we wouldn't be enduring a season of interruptions.
Spoilers/Timeline: None/Set anytime S2 onward.
A/N: Title found in Faith Hill's Wish for You. Big thanks to Alanna1231 for putting up with my questions and offering feedback.
She threw her kit in the back of the SUV and climbed into the passenger seat, anxious to get back to the lab and get started. She watched, confused, as he turned the ignition and began drumming on the steering wheel.
"Why are you so happy? We just spent four hours attempting to determine how many victims were in a mass grave..."
"It's the first day of spring, Bones." He rolled down his window.
"I'm aware, Booth." The paper had happily informed her of the fact this morning as she swallowed a container of yogurt in roughly five minutes. "I don't understand why the Earth's axis neither tilting towards nor away from the Sun mak-"
"It doesn't, ok? It just means that it's getting warmer, the sky's getting brighter." She snorted. "What?"
"The sky always looks the same. It's just a matter of how the molecules happen to be reflecting the light at any given time."
"Sure, scientifically, but the past week has been overcast and dreary. Look at it now."
She glanced out the window. Sure enough, it was bright and sunny; slight wisps of clouds appeared on the horizon. "It's just a coincidence. It's not like someone says, 'Oh, it's the vernal equinox, time for nice weather' and flips a switch to make sure it happens."
He chuckled. "Did you just make a joke?" She shrugged, which only made him laugh harder. "That's not the only thing, Bones. The first day of spring means free ice."
"What? Isn't ice always free?" She twisted out of her coat, throwing it on the backseat; it was warm out. "Besides, it's too hot for ice to form..."
"Italian ice." He shook his head in disbelief. Really, he should know better by now. "You know, the kind you eat."
"You should have said that to begin with."
"I realize that now." He turned left and stopped the car. "Stay right there, I'll be right back!"
She rolled her eyes as he jumped out and practically sprinted to join the moderate line; he was such a big kid sometimes. At least, the line seemed to be moving fast as patron after patron left with a cup full of some brightly colored confection. One boy carried one that was a revolting blue; she was sure it would color his lips and hoped Booth didn't get any ideas about making her look like a Smurf. She was still contemplating this when the door opened and he slid in, handing her a cup and a spoon.
"What flavor did you get?"
"Try it and find out." He flicked the stereo on, leaning back against the seat.
She hesitated a moment, then dipped her spoon into the cup. The intense flavor of the ice startled her. So much so that it took her a moment to realize what it was: strawberry. Cool and refreshing. Perfect.
"Thanks, Booth." She took another bite and leaned across the console. "What flavor did you get?"
He quickly swallowed the spoonful he'd just put in his mouth, choking out, "Lime."
She laughed, looking forward to his explanation when they arrived back at the lab; his lips would be green.
