Jake and I sat side by side on the grass in a meadow and I leant my head onto his broad shoulder. We didn't say anything. If anyone had told me six months ago that Jacob Black and I would both imprint on half-vampires both he and I would have told them to go shove it but as fate would have it, that is exactly what happened. Jacob Black imprinted on Renesmee, who was Bella and Edward's daughter and I imprinted in Nahuel, a hundred and fifty year old half-vampire who saved all our lives when he came to witness to the Volturi. I set eyes on him the day after the battle and now I can't imagine a future without him. I never wanted to imprint, I still resent it to an extent, but Nahuel is kind and gentle and changed his diet just to be with me. In all, Nahuel was perfect, and he was mine, my soul mate according to fate. Today Nessie and Nahuel had wanted to travel to Alaska to see their new house. They would be moving soon, while Jake and I remained in La Push since we couldn't leave our pack; and Alaska was close enough so that we could still see each other as much as we liked.
Jake and I had decided to go for a run, and now we were taking a break. Jake's hand played absently with my hair, it felt nice.
"Did you ever think that we were perfect for each other?" Jake asked softly startling me out of my thoughts and I frowned in confusion.
"What do you mean?"
"Like, did you ever think if we didn't imprint that we would end up together? If there was no Renesmee and no Nahuel; that we would have ended up together?" Jacob asked and I pulled away from him to look up into his face. He wasn't looking at me though, just looking out into the distance, his hand still playing with my hair.
"We probably would have," I admitted looking down at the grass.
"And we would have had a happy, uncomplicated life together," Jake mused turning to look at me and I nodded. As we looked at each other I knew he could imagine the same future I could for us if there had been no imprints.
Jake ever so slowly leant forward and pressed his warm lips to mine and for a moment I lost myself in the imagination of what my life would be if I had a choice. I would have chosen Jake, he knew it and I knew it, we understood each other, we understood loosing someone who meant the world to us, we understood how long it took for a broken heart to heal, we understood. I pulled away from him and he dropped his eyes to the grass.
"But we do have our imprints Jake," I reminded him and Jake shrugged.
"I know, its just sometimes I like to imagine what it would have been like if I had had a choice," Jake said slowly and I rested my head onto his shoulder and sighed deeply, his hand moved to play with my hair again.
"I know what you mean."
