Author: This is my first foray into Star Trek fanfiction, and I'm frankly terrified. It's just such a massive fandom...and all I know is the movie. -_-b Ah, well. This has a potential to become a multi-shot. Here we go!

"Bones! Bones! There you are!"

The doctor rested his head in his hands, recognizing the voice. He barely managed to suppress a groan. "Yes?" he asked as Jim carelessly sprawled into the seat across from him. The young man was all wide, mischievous smiles, which made Bone's stomach sink towards his heels as he observed the cadet through his fingers. Such an expression always—always—boded ill.

"I'm gonna take the Kobayashi Maru tomorrow."

"WHAT?!" Bones exclaimed, looking up sharply. "Are you insane? You do know no-one's beaten that test—ever."

"Well, I'm not 'no-one'," Jim said with one of his nearly-trademarked cocky smirks. "You'll be there, right?"

"Unfortunately," the doctor grumbled. He was pretty sure he'd be dragooned into being one of the mock crewmen. "You're going to make a fool of yourself, you know."

Jim shook his head. "Bones, Bones, you don't believe in me?"

"I believe that you're a raving lunatic. I am continually astounded that you pass your psych evals."

Jim feigned wounded convincingly. "Aw, c'mon. You're my friend."

"And because I'm your friend, I can tell you that you're crazy! I can't believe you're subjecting yourself to that!"

"Hey, at least I won't come to you bleeding from—"

"Look. I want to forget that. Christ, man, is it your mission in life to make me prematurely gray?"

Jim merely gave him a carefree grin. "See you then!" the younger man said as he stood and clapped Bones's shoulder, veering towards some attractive young women who had just passed behind the exasperated doctor.

McCoy sighed and rubbed his eyes in frustration. "Why are you friends with him?" he asked himself under his breath.
