So I'm rewriting this's overdue and honestly I don't like what I had written. The original was created when I was in Jr. High and I am appalled at how it looked. So the story is getting an overhaul while I write new stuff for my Harry Potter stories (I have not abandoned any of my stories. Some are going through major overhaul right now) which should be updated soon. School and work have taken up almost all of my free time so...yeah

The plot is almost staying the same. I'm just changing some scenery. For instance: this will no longer take place in Duel Academy. I don't know why I ever tried to do that I hate the GX season and I don't know it very well.

So without further ado...

Disclaimer: Well let me just do one for the whole story. I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh!. I own a ton of cards and a few well put together decks and that's it. Well and a drawing I did of Seto...but yeah

On with the new version of the story~

Oh by the way, this is to clear up confusion:
blah blah thoughts
/Blah blah/ mental communication

Chapter 1: Discover the Change

Briar hummed to herself as she made her way out of the airport. She smiled as she felt the sun shine on her face. "I'm finally back in Domino. I hope they haven't forgotten me." Her smile turned sad as she remembered why she had to leave two years ago.

And who she had to leave.

Shaking her head she hailed a taxi and gave the driver the address to her first stop. Smiling and thanking the driver she stepped out and shielded her eyes from the sun's glare off of the building. Her luggage was currently on it's way to her house, so she only had to grab one bag she had used as a carry on, which held her deck and a few other items. She pulled open the front door of the building and smiled as she walked over to the secretary.

The secretary -a woman in her forties with brown hair and brown eyes- smiled as Briar walked closer. "Hello Miss. How can I help you?"

"I'm actually here to surprise an old friend. Mr. Kaiba. My name is Briar Amber Dracul, if you want I can-" She was cut off as someone latched themselves to her midsection. "Wha?!"

"BRIAR! You're here! You're here!" She heard a familiar voice exclaim.

Looking down, the older teen's eyes widened as she saw Mokuba Kaiba with his arms firmly latched around her waist. "Mokuba?!" her eyes brightened. "Mokie! Oh my goodness you've gotten so big!" she laughed as she hugged the boy back. "I just got back into town today. I thought I would surprise you and your brother. That is, if Seto isn't busy?"

Mokuba shook his head. "Naw, big brother just got out of a meeting so I'm sure he'd welcome the surprise of you being back in town. For good this time...right?" He asked almost timidly.

"Yes Mokie. I'm back for good." Briar smiled at the youngest Kaiba brother. Mokuba was always so shy when he was hopeful. "Now, let's go give your big brother a heart attack." She giggled, winking at Mokuba.

The young Kaiba smiled and pulled her along. Before they could get too far away, Briar looked back at the smiling secretary and exclaimed "Thank you!" before disappearing around the corner and into the elevator.

Mokuba had come up with a plan. He was there to see his brother anyway, so he would go in and Briar would wait outside the door. When Mokuba gave the key word, which ironically was "big brother", Briar would walk into the room. Hopefully, this was a good surprise for the young CEO.

Mokuba peeked his head into his brother's office. Smiling when he realized that his brother was alone, he walked in. "Seto!"

The oldest Kaiba looked up from his computer -and his scowling- and smiled slightly when he saw his brother walk in. "Mokuba. What are you doing here?"

"Aww. I thought I'd come see you big brother! I also have a surprise for you!" Mokuba almost sang as he skipped over to the window, successfully making Seto turn in his seat to face the windows overlooking Domino City.

"Mokuba what is it? You know I love you visiting, but I just got done with a very...unpleasant video conference and-" he didn't get to finish as he heard another person enter the room.

"Maybe that's a sign you need to take a break Seto."

Seto Kaiba whirled around sure he was hearing the voice he had hoped to hear again for a few years now. Seeing that it wasn't his imagination -and that Mokuba's smile had gotten wider and brighter if possible- Seto stood up out of his seat and hesitated only for a moment before briskly walking towards Briar. "Briar?"

Briar gave a small smile. "Hey Seto." she almost whispered. People didn't realize that Seto Kaiba had a public mask. Created by years of being tutored by Gozaboro Kaiba, that mask was only nonexistent with two people. Mokuba obviously, and Briar herself who had been with Seto through everything. Well, everything up until two years ago when she had to leave. At the current moment, Seto's mask shattered and he hugged the girl close to him.

"I thought you were gone for good."

"No. I told you I had to take care of some family stuff out of country. I'm sorry it took me so long and that I wasn't here when..." she cut herself off before she said the name. Giving another small smile she continued. "Well, I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner." she finished as she wrapped her arms around Seto's waist.

Seto tightened his arms before releasing the girl so he could look at her in the eyes. "So can you tell me anything about what you needed to do? Or even where you went?" he asked as he, Mokuba and Briar headed for the couch in the corner of the office.

Briar fidgeted a little. "Well, I can tell you that it had to do with some of my uncles. They got into a fight and it got ugly. I've always been the peacekeeper in my family, so I was the only one who could pry them off of each other. Most of the reason it took so long is because they are all hard headed." She rubbed the back of her neck. I hate lying to them. Even if the truth is in the lie. She looked at Seto and Mokuba and mentally sighed. They aren't ready for the truth. No matter what the Pharaoh did when he Penalty Gamed Seto. Plastering a sheepish grin on her face she continued. "As for where I was...I was in Egypt. I thought I mentioned to you guys that I'm Egyptian?" she asked tilting her head to the side in confusion. I could have sworn I mentioned it at some point.

Seto nodded. "You did. I just didn't want to assume that's where you had gone." He checked his watch. "Mokuba, you really should be getting home to finish the homework I know you have." He looked at his computer and sighed. "There is nothing more I can do here either. So I might as well come home with you." He turned to Briar. "Are you staying at your old place? Or did you need somewhere to stay? I never offered before because of..." He trailed off for a moment before coming back to himself. "Well in any case, I'm offering now. I know how lonely a big place can get."

Briar thought for a moment. It was true, her house in Domino was rather large. Too large for one person. She shrugged. "Honestly? It's my uncle's place. He stays there whenever he's in town which isn't very often. He offered to let me use it, but you are right. It's too big for one person." She smiled brightly. "I can always go and get my stuff tomorrow."

Seto gave another small smile before they left the room and his mask went back up. Briar sighed. If only he was able to let that mask down all the time. I hope one day he can get rid of it for good, not just while it's the three of us.

Arriving at the Kaiba Mansion, Briar was able to see that the brothers had changed much of what it used to look like. The colors were brighter. Shades of white, blue and silver dominated the entire inside of the Mansion. She smiled at the color scheme. Even now he's unable to get away from his connection to his Dragons. Mokuba eagerly gave her a updated tour of the place, making sure to let her know she was staying in the same wing as the brothers. In fact, her room was right between theirs. She smirked to herself. Sneaky Seto. Very sneaky.

Later that night, Briar found it hard to fall asleep. Sighing she flung her covers off and sat up. Hunching over she held her head in her hands. I hate lying to them. She gazed out the window into the night sky. Why can't I just tell them Father? I know Seto would be reluctant to believe me at first but...He knows I'm smart enough to not fall for a stupid lie. Growling in aggravation, she walked out of her room and wandered her way past Seto's home office. Seeing the light on she tilted her head in confusion. Is he up? She walked closer and peeked through the crack in the door. She saw Seto, slumped over his desk with his head in his hands. She frowned. "Seto?"

His head shot up. He looked exhausted. "Briar? What are you doing up?"

"I could ask you the same question. I couldn't sleep. Too many thoughts going through my head." she replied as she walked towards him. He turned his chair to face her and she took his hands in hers. "Seto...I know this is a stupid question to ask but, are you alright?" Briar asked softly.

Seto let out and aggravated sigh but shook his head. "No. I'm not. Ever since I lost my duel with Yugi Motou, I've been having more questions than answers. He said he banished the darkness of my heart. Honestly, even if I think he's somewhat insane, ever since the duel I've felt...different. Lighter almost. It's strange, before that duel I probably wouldn't have payed attention to the fact that you were back. Even if you have been my best friend since..." he trailed off, his eyes darkening.

Briar looked at him, hope shining in her eyes. Maybe he's not lost yet. "Seto? I know your mind is in turmoil right now but, maybe Yugi was right?" he looked at her but she held up a hand to keep him from talking just yet. "Wait let me explain. I know how...he treated you and what it made you into. Maybe Yugi was able to banish whatever influence he had on you and was able to wake up the part of you we all thought lost." Her eyes softened and he pulled her onto his lap. As he did, she wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. "Would it be such a bad thing if it was true?" She asked softly.

Seto sighed. Truly conflicted. On one hand he knew she was right. There was a darkness lurking in his soul and heart before his duel with Yugi. He could feel himself surrendering to it before that duel. If that duel hadn't happened...Well he didn't want to think about it. His arms tightened around her middle. "Your right Emerald. As much as my mind wants to deny anything to do with the so called 'magic' he claims to have used to do so, I can't deny that something happened in that duel to change me for the better." He sighed and looked at her. Briar had drifted to sleep in his arms. He smiled. "I'll keep my promise to you Emerald. I'll protect you just as much as I protect Mokuba. You're too important to me to lose. I just wish I had realized how important you were to me sooner, and that he hadn't tainted the love I have for you. I'm still finding my way back to where I was, but with your help as well as Mokuba's, I'm sure I'll be able to change into someone I can actually be proud of." He whispered as he carried her back to her room and put her back under the sheets. Kissing her forehead, he turned and left the room.

The next morning, Briar found Mokuba in the kitchen. He looked depressed.

Frowning, Briar made her way over to the pre-teen. "Mokie? What's wrong?"

The boy looked at her and gave a sad sigh. "Seto left early this morning. He said he had to find himself. What's going on Briar?"

Briar sighed and hugged the boy to her, trying to comfort him. "Seto has a lot of things he's questioning now. The duel with Yugi put things into perspective for him. He's just got to try and find what he lost so long ago." she pulled away slightly. "He'll be back Mokie, and when he comes back, he'll be closer to the brother you lost to him."

Mokuba brightened at that. "Oh! Yeah this came for you earlier." He ran towards the living room and brought back a white box.

Tilting her head in confusion, Briar took it from him. "I'm not expecting anything. I wonder who..." she trailed off as she saw the contents and narrowed her eyes. "Pegasus."
