It was the little things.

The way he would pull her close during the night and mumble that he loved her and would always need her into her hair as often as possible.

The way he made sure to call or leave a note to let know her know where he was and when he would be back because he never wanted her to not know where he was.

The way he could still go from a dead sleep to combat alert in less than six seconds when the baby cried in the next room.

The way he would subtly remove her service weapon from her duffle after she came back from work when he thought she wasn't looking and put it up in the safe.

The way he would check the lock on the safe several times a day to make sure it was secure while still remaining firm on his unlocked front door policy.

It was the little things that he did without knowing it that reminded her everyday that he had a whole other life before her. Before them.

It was the little things.

The way she would let him pull her close during the night and mumble that she loved him and would always need him into his chest as often as possible.

The way she constantly fiddled with her wedding ring as if checking if it was still, or really, there.

The way she would leave her engagement ring at home when she went on missions but always wore her wedding ring on her dog tags whenever it was appropriate. Because she'd had engagement rings before, but never a wedding ring.

The way she would never take a cab unless she really had to and was never late picking anyone up.

The way, very rarely, she would flinch and take a step back when they got into a heated argument before regaining her composure and yelling right back at him. Because every now and again she had flashbacks and forgot that their arguments were only ever verbal and short-lived.

It was the little things that she did without knowing it that reminded him everyday that she had a whole other life before him. Before them.
