Title: Just in Case (I'm in Love with You)
Word Count: 450
Spoilers: Pain in the Heart, what else? I'm still obsessive with this episode. Also some general season 4 spoilers.
Summary: That year, she starts giving Christmas gifts and birthday gifts, even though she never has before, so that she can have a place in a box of favorite things, just in case another one of her friends decides to join forces with a cannibalistic serial killer.
Disclaimer: Bones belongs to Hart Hanson, Kathy Reichs, and FOX. I'm just having fun.
Authors' Note: Weird, write-y mood tonight. I blame it on the summer heat and my lack of desire to do the dishes. Sappier than normal, maybe. Trying something a little different. I'm not actually sure if Brennan would think this way, but I feel like there would be more repercussions to PitH than we were given, and I wanted to explore the possibilities.
This year, she starts giving Christmas gifts and birthday gifts, even though she never has before, so that she can have a place in a box of favorite things, just in case another one of her friends decides to join forces with a cannibalistic serial killer.
This year, she walks out of the grocery store or the department store or the bar every time she hears Cyndi Lauper, just in case there is another delusional psychopath trying to kill her partner before the third verse can begin.
This year, she handles all mandibles herself, just in case they hold clues that can't afford to be missed.
This year, she spends more time with Booth at his apartment than at the diner because it's more personal and she wants to be able to hold on to the personal things, just in case he dies, but for real this time.
She rotates her interns (in case one turns out to be a killer; it won't hurt as much if she has four others to fall back on, she tells herself), she corrects the teachings of anthropology (she needs to let him know that he is an alpha-male, just as he is, in case Booth gets the urge to prove it by doing something stupid like stepping in front of a bullet not meant for him), she does something bad (in case she needs to do something bad in order to keep from doing something really bad, like killing and eating people), she shows Sweets her scars (in case he needs to see them), she tries to live her life more with her heart in overdrive (in case he might want to live that life with her).
So one day, when they are sitting in his kitchen, finishing their beers, and arguing about something- it doesn't really matter what- she leans over and kisses him on the mouth. She tells herself that she does it just in case he wants her to, but the truth is, she does it because she wants to and because life is ephemeral and all too short, and his brush with death, her brush with loss, has taught her that.
It isn't logical, it doesn't make sense, but she thinks that kissing Booth might be the best decision she's made all day (and, if she's being really honest with herself, it may be the best decision she's made ever, in regards to her personal life), and so she does it again.
"Bones," he is shocked, she observes, but pleased. "What was that for?"
She shrugs and kisses him a third time (just in case she's in love with him).
