So, I was having trouble sleeping and I decided Jim should to and of course, he'd go to Bones first. It's not the greatest, but I can't think of what else I could do to make it better, so I apologize if it's crappy. I tried to catch any errors, but some might have slipped through. Anyway, please, read, relax, enjoy, and review.

Of course, I don't own Star Trek.

The Problem with Best Friends

Doctor Leonard McCoy was fast asleep in his quarters when an annoying, yet familiar buzzing broke his dreams. Sleepily and not quite aware of his actions, he slapped the comm button with his hand.

"What?" he asked.

"Bones open the door," the person on the other side replied.

"Jim? What do you want?"

"Just open up." Though he was still partially asleep, McCoy could detect something unusual in the man's voice.

"Tell me what you want first."

"Bones, please," the younger man begged. McCoy sighed heavily and considered his options. He could leave the man outside his quarters where he would continue to bug him and not allow the doctor to return to sleep because Jim was just that persistent or he could just open the door and perhaps resolve the problem in a few minutes. He settled on option two with a grumble and a curse about making friends with annoying, arrogant people who arrived on shuttlecrafts heading for Starfleet Academy beat up and hung over.

"Alright, come in," he said, sitting up and swinging his legs onto the floor. Jim came in instantly. "Now, will you just tell me what you want?"

"I can't sleep."

"You can't… D-it Jim. You couldn't sleep, so you decided to come bother me. I was sleeping, you know."

"I know and I'm sorry, but I've been lying in bed for hours and I can't get comfortable. It's too hot in there and my nose keeps getting stuffed up and I keep coughing. I can't find a position that's comfortable."

"Coughing? Why didn't you just go to sickbay?"

"I don't like the doctor on duty there."

"You don't like… Jim sometimes you're such an infant. Come on, let's go." Bones grabbed the man by his arm and dragged him out of his quarters and down to sickbay. He waived off the other doctor, pushing Jim towards a biobed as he went to get the meds he needed. In a minute, he returned to Jim and jabbed the hypospray into the Captain's neck harder than necessary.

"Thanks Bones," Jim said rubbing the injection site with a smile.

"Just let me sleep until morning and from now on, don't forget to come by nightly for your allergy shot. The next time you forget, I'm going to leave you to the mercy of whoever's on duty."

"I got caught up sparring."

"I know, I know. You've always got a reason, just remember next time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to sleep." Jim followed Bones out of sickbay, walking together until they separated to go to their own quarters. Both men fell asleep as soon as their heads hit their pillows and didn't wake until morning when their shifts began.

So, how terrible was it?
