Lily Evans was sitting by the lake in the grounds of Hogwarts School. It was a quiet evening and there were no other students around. She was simply marvelling in the silence when she was interrupted by two voices arguing not ten feet away from her.

"Prongs, mate. You can't keep letting her hurt you like this. It's not healthy." The first voice said.

"I wouldn't expect you to understand, Padfoot." The second voice sighed. Lily immediately recognized the voices as Sirius Black and James Potter.

"What do you see in her anyway?" Sirius inquired.

"Well she's smart, witty, beautiful-"

"And evil and sadistic on top of that!" Sirius interrupted his best friend, sounding frustrated. "She treats you like dirt, Prongs. You keep coming back for more like some kind of masochist!"

"Wow, Padfoot." James laughed. How long did it take you to find those words?"

"I asked Remus." Sirius answered. "But that's not the point. It's time for you to get over Evans. I can set you up with pretty much any girl in school-"

"Don't you see, Padfoot?" James asked, sounding equally frustrated as Sirius. "I love Lily! I won't go out with anyone else because I love Lily! I keep asking her out because I love her! I love the way her eyes sparkle even when she's mad. I love the way she's one of the few girls in school who doesn't fawn over us. I love how she always comes up with a witty response. Lily is the one I want. Not some girl you think I would like."

Lily sat, shocked. She hadn't known that James actually loved her. She thought that he simply asked her out because she was the only girl who would say no. She never even dreamed that James Potter could be so deep.

"You're seventeen, Prongs." Sirius said. "You don't know what love is. You don't know if you're in love with her or not."

"Yes, I do." James argued

"No you don't."

"Yes, I do."

"I'll bet you twenty galleons that nothing will ever happen between you and Evans other than maybe a small fling."

"You're on."

"Good. Now let's go. I promised Peter I'd beat him at chess. He likes it for some reason..."

The two voices faded into the distance, leaving Lily with her thoughts. So James Potter actually truly loved her. He wasn't as shallow as Lily originally thought. James Potter had always been good looking to Lily but he was so cruel to Severus... Of course her friendship with Severus was over after he called her the M word but still... What James said was actually kind of sweet. Maybe if he showed that side of himself more often, Lily may actually like him. Even now Lily may have been falling for James Potter. Yes, indeed she was.
